Interrogatories

Are there wonderful weirdos in your life? Who are they?

If you could change places with your boss, what changes would you make in the workplace?

Did you have plush toys that you loved as a child? Were you as close to yours as Calvin was to Hobbes? (Was there ever a better comic strip?)

It’s “I Love Food Day.” Is there any food that you never, ever tire of?

What bad habit do you have that you wish you didn’t?

On This Day

In 337, Constantine I was succeeded as emperor by his sons, Constantine II, Constantius II, and Constans I. Such imagination! I wonder if he had a daughter named Constance?

In 1739, a slave rebellion in South Carolina (then a British Colony) erupted. Called the Stono Rebellion, or Cato’s Conspiracy, it was eventually put down by white militias, and led to laws that further oppressed slaves, like restricting their right to assemble, their right to education, and their right to move about freely. They also made it so owners needed legislative approval to free any slave.

In 1850, California became the 31st state.

In 1924, striking Filipino sugar workers and police in Hawaii battled, resulting in the deaths of 16 strikers and 4 policemen. This was called the Hanapēpē Massacre. It was not unusual for labor disputes to turn violent (usually caused by the management side) in those days.

In 1926, NBC was formed.

In 1956, Elvis Presley made his first Ed Sullivan Show appearance.

In 1965, Hurricane Betsy made landfall near New Orleans, causing widespread damage that exceeded $1 billion in damages.

In 1971, rioting broke out at Attica Prison in New York, lasting 4 days and resulting in 39 deaths.

In 2011, a PG&E-owned pipeline in San Bruno, CA exploded, killing 8 people, injuring 58, and destroying 35 houses (plus 3, if you count the ones that had to be demolished afterward). The fire burned well into the following day.

It’s actually 65 here now, it’s so lovely. I turned off the air conditioning for the first time in days. It will have to go back on, but for now I’m enjoying the quiet.

I woke up feeling kind of congested and sore-throaty, I’m really hoping this is just post-nasal drip and not the start of a cold or flu. Summer colds are the worst.

It’s Wonderful Weirdos Day, which I am assuming means eccentrics? I seem to encounter two kinds: People who are genuinely different, and people who are weird because they can be. These days it leans towards the latter. When growing up I knew tons of the former. One of my best friends is the former, but on a minor scale.

I don’t have a boss right now, but if I did, it would probably involve raises across the board and making sure of equal pay for equal work.

I only had one plush toy, a stuffed tiger named Sinbad. I wasn’t close to Sinbad. Or any dolls of any kind (recall, I used to behead Barbies..) Calvin and Hobbes was the best strip ever. Single panel would be Far Side.

I never tire of pizza and macaroni and cheese. I think I see the common denominator there. 😉 Throw in some ice cream, too. Is coffee food? Wine?

Laziness and procrastination in regards to getting things like bookshelves and closets organized. I blame the cats, they want to get into anything I’m doing.

But nicer than yesterday, which reverted to hot and humid.  In other news, I see a few leaves turning.

“Wonderful Weirdooooo!  Five minutes past the big hour of five o’clock!”  You want names?  I’m thinking of a couple of weirdos.  Don’t know how wonderful they are.  I’ve gotta think about this one some more.

I happen to have a really good boss right now, who’s kind of looking after me and her other charges in these nasty economic times.  I wouldn’t change places with her.  Her job is too stressful, imo.  She does have one habit that people snicker about, which is that she leaves very long phone messages.  Sometimes, they’re so long, she runs out of the allotted time and sends a second message to complete the first one.

I had a Teddy bear and a Raggedy Andy, but I was too young to remember what kind of relationship I had with them.  My second son was the stuffed animal kid.  He had a favorite, a monkey (called Little Monkey), which he was rarely apart from.  On the subject of Calvin and Hobbes, that’s one of a long list I have of Stuff People Are Gaga Over That I Don’t Get At All.

I never get tired of stuff with ground beef and tomato sauce in.  Spaghetti and meatballs, Spanish rice, etc.

Bad habits?  I bite my nails, but I’ve never wished I didn’t.

Weirdos:  my kids are super weird.  My parents are weird and my friends are weird too.  But I love them all.  My husband is weird in that he is so normal.

Boss:  the owner of my vet clinic couldn’t be on to e if her life depended on it.  I find it incredibly annoying.

Toys:  I still have mine, his name is Barkley and he is a long flat dog that I have now passed on to my daughter.  He sleeps on the foot of her bed now.  And, no, there was never a better comic strip than Calvin and Hobbes.

Food:  BLTs and garden fresh cherry tomatoes

Bad habit:  I am a nail biter.  Terrible habit.

none i can think of.  some acceptable weirdos.  maybe even an occasionally delightful weirdo.  none I’d call wonderful.

If you could change places with your boss, what changes would you make in the workplace?

In one job, I am a boss.  I do my best to stay out of the way as much as possible, provide suggestions to maintain task targeting.  In another job, I would not change places with the boss for a seven figure salary.

Did you have plush toys that you loved as a child? Were you as close to yours as Calvin was to Hobbes? (Was there ever a better comic strip?)

Yeah, I had a stuffed dog when I was two-three.  Pretty much wore it out. And on the comic front, farside remains my #1.

a bunch.  cheese, bread top the list.

What bad habit do you have that you wish you didn’t?

    procrastination.
