On This Day

In 1834 – the British Empire abolished slavery. Non-laborer slaves were freed in 1838, and laborer slaves in 1840.

In 1842, a parade held by the black Young Men’s Vigilant Association was marching down Lombard Street in Philadelphia when they were attacked by a mob of Irish Catholics, who proceeded to riot (lasting 3 days) and even attempted to attack the home of one black leader, who was saved by the intercession of a Catholic priest. But you know, those black people are the violent ones! grrrrr…

In 1876, Colorado became the 38th U.S. state.

In 1936, the Olympic Games officially opened in Berlin, with Adolf Hitler presiding over the opening ceremonies. He had tried to limit the games to white people and Christians, but backed down when several nations threatened a boycott. He did succeed at keeping German Jews from participating. Of course, Jesse Owens helped him realize some of his worst fears.

In 1966, Charles Whitman climbed a tower at the University of Texas in Austin, armed with several guns. He killed 3 people inside the tower, then opened fire on the people below, killing 11 (and another who died of his injuries later) before he was killed by police. It was later learned that he had killed his wife and his mother as well. 31 others were wounded in the incident, but survived.

In 1973, George Lucas’ first hit, American Graffiti, premiered in Los Angeles.

In 1981, MTV began airing on cable TV. Did you know that the “M” stands for “music”, and at one time they actually showed music videos?

In 1988, in a dark day for all Americans, Rush Limbaugh began broadcasting his syndicated hate-filled diatribes across the country.

In 2007, the I-35W Mississippi River bridge in Minneapolis collapsed during rush hour, killing 35 and injuring 145. Then-governor Pawlenty had vetoed a transportation bill that could have repaired the bridge (though it really needed replacing) and maintenance had been deferred for a year because it was deemed “more efficient.”

  1. Gee

    Better that than inside.

It’s National Simplify Your Life Week. In what ways does your life need simplification? (Mine is clutter.)

Do you ever travel by train? What is the longest train journey you have taken? Where do you wish they had a train to?

What fear have you outgrown? What fear do you wish you could outgrow?

Have you ever had or even seen a Raspberry Cream Pie, and if so, can you tell me where to get one?

    Less stuff, more money.  😉

I have traveled by train, but not in a long time.  When I was a kid, we used to ride the train from Berwyn MD to Pittsburgh to visit my grandparents.  I wish they still had a train to Clarksville.

Gotta think about the fear thing.

I don’t recall ever having had a raspberry cream pie.  I’d remember it if I had, I’ll bet.

  2. JG in MD

Simplification? 1. keep my mind clear and focused as I face the morass of my genealogy work from the past 16 years and clean it up, intellectually and physically. 2. Come to terms with my craft supplies.

Train? I took a train to Bowie State College a few years ago to see the President speak, but that was a fluke of time and destintion. We have train tracks everywhere in MD/VA/WVA but there’s no real train travel. One train a day most destinations, inconvenient time, round trip doesn’t work, skips the stations located in useful places. God, I wish they’d make use of all this potential.

Fear? Not really afraid of crowds or parking buildings any more, except on a bad day. My fears are no longer the kind you can outgrow, they’re the kind you do battle with as you grow older and they get worse.

    Raspberry Cream Pie?
Never heard of it, but if you see one, send it to me. Immediately. I’ll pay the shipping.

I’m going to Frederick this morning for breakfast with Fred. Maybe Mimi’s ( http://www.mimiscafe.com ) will have raspberry cream pie to go.

  3. It’s National Simplify Your Life Week. In what ways does your life need simplification? (Mine is clutter.)

I need to be better organized but I don’t think my life needs to be simplified.

Do you ever travel by train? What is the longest train journey you have taken? Where do you wish they had a train to?

Yes indeed. Trains are excellent.  Longest trip was Denmark to Venice. They should have regular, high speed, frequent train service between all major US cities.

What fear have you outgrown? What fear do you wish you could outgrow?

I used to be phobic about dogs. I still don’t like them unless I am very familiar with them and they are calm dogs, but I am no longer phobic. Not sure what fear I want to outgrow now.

Have you ever had or even seen a Raspberry Cream Pie, and if so, can you tell me where to get one?

    Nope, sorry.

A couple of years ago, my car broke down when I was driving home from Dallas. I had to leave it in Temple (maybe an hour & a half from Austin). When it was fixed, I took a cith bus to the train station, then the train to Temple, where the car guy picked me up. It was a nice trip. Cheap, on time, uncrowded. But trying to use it for subsequent trips to Dallas didn’t work. It took the same time it would to drive, but didn’t get me even close to my mom’s place.

What fear have you outgrown? What fear do you wish you could outgrow?

wish I could get over my acrophobia – when forced to use the stairs in my building (or if I even think too hard about those stairs), I have nightmares

Have you ever had or even seen a Raspberry Cream Pie, and if so, can you tell me where to get one?

    sorry, can’t help

Simple:  well, my old house had lots of built ins.  My new house doesn’t.  I need a dresser so my clothes aren’t piled up along the wall in my bedroom.  Other than that I am pretty meticulous so my life is pretty simplified.

Train:  just commuter here in Chicago.  When I was a kid we lived in Germany (west) and took the train for a school field trip to the Christmas feat in Munich.  That was fun.  I wish we had any sort of high speed train here in the US.

Fear:  outgrown my fear of boats, haven’t outgrown my fear of heights.

Raspberry cream:  nope, sounds nice though.

It’s National Simplify Your Life Week. In what ways does your life need simplification?  Still in the ongoing process of getting rid of stuff.  Funny how you spend the first half of your adult life accumulating stuff and the last half getting rid of it.  Getting rid of even more as I prepare to move again, hopefully for the last time ever.

Do you ever travel by train? What is the longest train journey you have taken? Where do you wish they had a train to?  The longest American train journey was from Houston to St. Louis (many, many years ago).  The longest non-American trip was from Inverness, Scotland to Penzance, Cornwall broken only by the necessity of a train change in London.  The sleeper from Scotland was very nice.  I just wish there were more trains outside the northeastern US.  I love the train.

What fear have you outgrown? What fear do you wish you could outgrow?  Can’t think of any I’ve outgrown as whatever ones I have are so deeply ingrained I don’t notice them.  The exception is fire.  Just scares the hell out of me.

Have you ever had or even seen a Raspberry Cream Pie, and if so, can you tell me where to get one?  I too have never seen such a pie, so I just Googled raspberry cream pie and voila recipes aplenty.  Bon appetite!

But I’ve never heard of such a thing. Someone email America’s Test Kitchen with a request!

I’ve been clear across the country by train and back again. Twice. Fabulous trip. I do wish I could take a train directly to South Lake Tahoe; the closest it gets is Truckee, which isn’t really close enough for non-drivers.

  8. Floja Roja

I wanted to type that as “Food” morning.

It’s National Simplify Your Life Week. In what ways does your life need simplification? (Mine is clutter.)

Still clutter. Will always be clutter.

Do you ever travel by train? What is the longest train journey you have taken? Where do you wish they had a train to?

I love trains. My longest trip was from Seattle back down to L.A. after I helped a friend move back up there. The worst part was it got dark just as we were going through the Cascades, so I missed the most spectacular part. I wish Republicans would STFU and take the money to set up high speed rail everywhere, but they appear to want this country to fail.

What fear have you outgrown? What fear do you wish you could outgrow?

Fear of the dark, certainly. My fear of bugs has lessened, but still is around, depending on the bug. Roaches don’t scare me at all anymore. Fortunately the cats will quickly dispatch any such intruders (and fortunately this place has no roaches).

Have you ever had or even seen a Raspberry Cream Pie, and if so, can you tell me where to get one?

I asked this because I adore raspberries and have been in numerous pie shops, and have never ever seen such a thing. The only cream pies I have seen are banana, lemon, and chocolate. So why a food holiday for something that is not available commercially?

  9. I hope the police and fire unions are paying attention now.

Actually, the fire unions were paying attention in 2011 and lots of them were part of the protests. Mahlon Mitchell, Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin president, ran in the recall election last year for lieutenant governor and is considering a run next year for governor.

FACEPALM ALERT: Filner: I Never Received Sex Harassment Training, So City May Be Liable

“The city has a legal obligation to provide sexual harassment training to all management level employees,” wrote attorney Harvey Berger, regarding payment of the legal bills Filner has accrued in defense of the lawsuit filed by his former communications director. “I have learned that many — if not most — people do not know what is and what is not illegal sexual harassment under California law.

The last woman came forward claiming “Filner once gave her a ‘wet, saliva-filled kiss’ on the cheek in a business meeting.”

Note to Filner: If you need training to figure out that ‘wet, saliva-filled kisses’ are NOT okay, then you should be removed from office for egregious stupidity.

Back to read the hovers after lunch.

    Q&A:

It’s National Simplify Your Life Week. In what ways does your life need simplification? (Mine is clutter.)  I need more organization.

Do you ever travel by train? What is the longest train journey you have taken? Where do you wish they had a train to?   I have occasionally travelled by train.  Longest trip was the Auto-Train from VA to FL.  Would love if they had a train from NY to the UK.

What fear have you outgrown? What fear do you wish you could outgrow?  Not sure about outgrown fears.  What fear I wish I could outgrow is easy – fear that the republicans will succeed in taking us back to the 1800s and completely roll back women’s rights.

Have you ever had or even seen a Raspberry Cream Pie, and if so, can you tell me where to get one?   I haven’t, but it sounds delicious and I will tell you if I ever find one.

  11. No.

And this (“In other news, water is wet.”) is still reported as breaking news some places. Good thing that we have Twitter to report the REAL news. Did you hear that the feds kicked down someone’s door and killed her entire family because she googled pressure cookers and backpacks? Must be true … saw it on the Twitternets.
