On This Day

In 1593, France’s King Henri IV, knowing which side his bread was buttered on, converted from Protestantism to Catholicism, cheerfully declaring (it is said), “Paris is well worth a Mass!”

In 1755, the British governor of Novia Scotia began the deportation of the Acadians (descendants of the original French settlers). An estimated 11,500 were deported overall, with at least a third dying in the process. They ended up scattered all over the Americas, with a large population setting in Louisiana, where they are known today as Cajuns.

In 1868, Wyoming became a U.S. Territory. Now Liz Cheney is getting all territorial over it, in spite of being a resident of Virginia.

In 1933, France began a new quota restricting the importation of American movies.

In 1947, The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer, starring Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, and Shirley Temple, premiered at Radio City Music Hall.

In 1956, Italian ocean liner SS Andrea Doria sank after colliding with the MS Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket (due to heavy fog).

In 1965, Bob Dylan enraged many of his fans (and made new ones) when he “went electric” at the Newport Folk Festival. (“Too commercial!” cried the early hipsters.)

In 2000, Dick Cheney selected himself to be George W. Bush’s running mate.

  1. How would you like your hot fudge sundae?

Vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, a little whipped cream, some salted nuts. This isn’t something I would actually order, but if someone gave it to me, I would eat it.

    What’s your favorite carousel?

    ?

Who makes the best chili dogs?

When I was a kid I ate chili dogs at A&W. I thought they were pretty good.

When in your life have you ever had to wear a uniform? Did you look good in your uniform?

I was a cheerleader in 8th grade. I went to a very small school, but there were cheerleaders for the boys’ basketball teams. The uniforms were heavy gold short-sleeved sweaters and modestly short navy blue skirts. Did I look good? Probably not. No pictures in my possession, but I know they exist.

What’s better, electric or acoustic Dylan?

    dunno

  2. How would you like your hot fudge sundae? A combination of white and chocolate ice cream, caramel and hot fudge sauce, whipped cream, peanuts and cherries on top.

What’s your favorite carousel? The one at the Oakland Zoo. I introduced my niece to the carousel when she was a baby.

Who makes the best chili dogs? me

When in your life have you ever had to wear a uniform? (School, work, teams, organizations?) Did you look good in your uniform? Parochial school. I looked okay.

If you played sports in school, what was your uniform number? Got pictures? volleyball but no number. Killer serve though.

What’s better, electric or acoustic Dylan? lean towards acoustic

    yes, please

Girl Scouts. I earned every badge it was possible to earn where we lived. Some of the requirements for some of the badges just didn’t work in Dubai. I was also a scout in 7th grade in Austin, maybe I got more then… It was the 70s, no one looked good.

What’s better, electric or acoustic Dylan?

It’s the words, so I’m good either way.

In copious amounts, please.  Vanilla ice cream, lots of hot fudge, whipped cream, cherry.  I’m not big on other toppings, like nuts and sprinkles.

I’m no carousel aficionado, but there’s a nice, very old one in front of the Smithsonian castle.

I’m no chili dog aficionado, but I’ll put in a word for Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington, DC.

I think the only uniform I ever wore was when I was in Cub Scouts.  I imagine I looked “cute.”

    Never played sports.

    Both Dylans are great.

How would you like your hot fudge sundae? I want the one they used to serve at a little restaurant we went to when I was a kid, long gone now. I haven’t ever found a sundae like it.

What’s your favorite carousel? Glen Echo Park http://tinyurl.com/l6ygyr8

Who makes the best chili dogs? Dunno, I don’t eat them.

Did you look good in your uniform? I was a Camp Fire Girl. We sewed wooden beads on a vest instead of badges on a sash. I was fascinated by the book of projects that earned beads, and I got a lot of them. Wish I still had that vest.

What’s better, electric or acoustic Dylan? No preference.

How would you like your hot fudge sundae?

    I’m lactose intolerant! 🙁

    What’s your favorite carousel?

Song? You’re a queer one, Julie Jordan! Heh….

Merrygoround? Nunley’s on Long Island.  The big white horse was my favorite.

Um… Sorry, i’ve never had one!

When in your life have you ever had to wear a uniform? (School, work, teams, organizations?) Did you look good in your uniform?

Wah… Sadly for work.  I hated it.  They were designed for men and I always had to tailor them to fit.

If you played sports in school, what was your uniform number? Got pictures?

    No way!

What’s better, electric or acoustic Dylan?

Acoustic.  Even he’s going back to acoustic. 🙂

What’s your favorite carousel? The long-gone one in the long-gone Forest Park Highlands in St Louis

Who makes the best chili dogs? No contest!  James Coney Island in Houston, TX

When in your life have you ever had to wear a uniform? (School, work, teams, organizations?) Did you look good in your uniform? High school phys-ed.  And I did look good because I was fit and skinny.

If you played sports in school, what was your uniform number? Got pictures? Inept, sports-wise.

What’s better, electric or acoustic Dylan?  Neither.  Never liked Dylan (okay I can hear the boos and hisses).

If I happened to have brownies, vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup on hand, I may make it. Sometimes I crave brownies, sometimes vanilla, but not necessarily together.

I make the best chili dogs, I suppose, lol, because the only time I order hot dogs are at games or hot dog stands, where chili dogs would be to messy.

Uniform: cheerleader, McDonalds, school PE- OMG that was an ugly outfit. One-piece bloomers, but in school color red like this

Cheerleader for JV team was about athletic as I got.
