On This Day

In 1796, the City of Cleveland, Ohio was founded.

In 1894, what is considered the first car race took place between Paris and Rouen, with the winner achieving speeds as high as 12 mph!

In 1916, a large suitcase bomb went off during a Preparedness Day Parade in San Francisco, killing 10 and injuring 40. The parade was held in anticipation of the US eventually entering WWI. Two labor leaders were eventually convicted (Labor was against entering the war), but the evidence was unclear. Their sentences were eventually commuted, and they were later pardoned.

In 1934, famed criminal John Dillinger was shot to death outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago after having watched Manhattan Melodrama, starring Myrna Loy.

In 1937, the Senate flatly rejected FDR’s attempt to add more Supreme Court Justices to the court.

In 1942, wartime gas rationing began in the United States.

In 2011, a pair of horrendous terror attacks took place in Norway (the worst being the massacre of an entire youth camp on a little island called Utøya. The perpetrator turned out to be a right wing nutjob, of course (which had Fox News in major denial).

Once my boyfriend and I hiked right across Marin County from Sausalito to Muir Woods. Our goal was Stinson Beach but we didn’t start early enough in the day. By the time we got to Muir Woods the sun was setting, so we hitched a ride back to the City.

I don’t know how many miles, but it was an all-day hike at a brisk pace.

  2. The #GOP loves to remind you that #Lincoln freed the slaves-in part because it was the last time a #Republican helped out African Americans.

And this made me snort out loud!

.@KenCuccinelli maybe if you tweeted a Geraldo-style selfie, you could end oral sex without involving the courts

I am assuming a “selfie” is a picture of the twitterer? There are a couple of selfies that would make me ill: Cuccinelli and Cruz.

Fortune cookies fortunes, found on the Internets. “The end is near … and it is all your fault!”

  3. It’s National Fortune Cookie Day. What’s the best fortune you ever got?

I usually don’t even open mine, but I did once get “Your mind is clear, your body is strong and your soul devout” Wow!

Do you think you could get a song stuck in other people’s heads? What song?

    No

How far have you ever walked in one day?

I haven’t really kept track.  Probably 5 miles or so.  I did once walk down 80 flights of stairs in one day – I was leafleting a building. I don’t even remember which campaign that was

Did you ever train an animal to do anything?

    No.

70-something, going up to 80-something today.  Cloudy.  Thunderstorms later.  If the 10-day forecast is to be believed (ha!), the high temps in the DC area will be below 90 for the rest of July.  That’s a treat!

I don’t know that I’ve ever had a memorable fortune.  And it’s too early for me to feel creative.

Are you sure you want to ask that question?  I think the title is The Wheel in the Sky.  (It’s stuck in my head now, if that’s any consolation.)

Just hiking, I walked about 17 miles once, but I did run a marathon once (which included some walking), so that would be 26 miles, 385 yards, or thereabouts.

Sadly, I have never trained an animal to do anything.  I think I need to receive training in how to do that.

Well, at least he got to see Myrna before he went.

    Sure he did.

no clue on fortunes or their cookies 😉

no, ’cause then it would be stuck in mine too.

18-20 miles in the backcountry, with packs and altitude change.  or 26 miles in the city, not so much luggage.  😉

yes.  can i count my children?

well duh…I could look smart if I had all the answers (questions) written on a card for me…cheater..!!..I think we need to build a fence…to keep those Canadians from crossing the border…and stealing our jobs.

I had a fortune stuck on a picture on my wall for years but it isn’t there any more. Whatever it said must have been my favorite fortune.

I used to hike in Virginia. There was one particular mountain all the hikers had on their list. The view was spectacular. It was in the Big Schloss area, but I don’t remember the name.

I taught Katie and Alice, who don’t get along very well, to stand next to me in bed and kiss before I’d get up and get their breakfast. This tradition has gone by the wayside. I think I’ll start it again.

  9. LauraFall

I am a die hard Eagles fan.

Some of their songs do well at describing my younger years.

Gotta say, JC Christian’s Tweet is my favorite, though it was hard to pick one out of that bunch, they’re hilarious.
