Tuesday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the Weather Critter Comment are still welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

The Recommended list, defined:

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture.

– The Rec list algorithm, per Kysen:

The Rec List is based upon number of recs and number of days on the list.

The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

Don’t use the Recommendation button as a ‘I read this and I like it’ indicator….you can say that in the comments and by rating the comments contained within the diary.

– Per me:

… any post that reflects our values and gets us to think about who we are and our place in the world is valuable to progressives.

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Let the greetings begin!

i saw something about a good tuesday morning?

    lol.  okay, day will improve!

son was up until 2 fricking a.m. again.  calling his shrink today.  cannot.deal.  then he laid in bed reading and laughing his head off.  hey, it was good to hear him laughing though.  ðŸ˜‰

so i knitted, watched a bit of tv, and finally went to bed, and the power went off.  neighbor’s too.  for about 5 minutes.

now, probably back to sleep for a bit.

next time, plant them farther apart, or in a bigger pot.

thunderstorms?  Not today – promised for tomorrow.

Headed off to the dentist this morning. Will not be a happy camper later.

Trying to stay away from the frothing mass of rabid racism engendered by the GZ acquittal, but it has spilled over into ostensibly progressive places, so I am happy to be in purple peace pond territory this morning.

    Hugs to all.

I’ll stay out of it as best I can, and it’s pretty comfortable in our office.  It’s an old building, so the HVAC is uneven.  If I turn it up enough to cool the bigger rooms, the smaller ones become permafrost.  I try to strike a happy medium.

Our new secretary started last week, and my new assistant’s first shift is today.  I’m expecting things to start to really hum.

Hope the outlook is as bright where you folks are.

Couldn’t get Katie to sleep with me last night. She stayed for a while after I humiliated myself by carrying her in. Her loving nature is such that she snuggled up all kissy kissy for a while, then skedaddled, almost apologizing.

This morning? Attempted to inflict puncture wounds on any square inch of skin I exposed.

    Who, moi?

You know those times before when I said I wish my insomnia would hit in the 2 o’clock hour, because then I’d at least get back to sleep? I was an idiot.

So why am I at work? Because I’m still awake, so why the hell not. Of course now that it is nearing work time, I’m getting sleepy.

We have nice temps here – 80s & rainy. Not drought-ending rain, but it’s way better than nothing.

Eating breakfast – black beans with spinach & rotel tomatoes, topped with avocado. Drinking tea. Trying to play City of Blinding Lights in my head because maybe that’d give me some energy.

    Mary Kilpatrick / Houma Today

HOUMA, La. — Rainy day grocery store shoppers at a Rouses Supermarket in Houma got a shock Monday afternoon when a woman was struck by lightning in the checkout line.

The unidentified woman, who is believed to be OK, was paying for her items about 2:13 p.m. when a flash of lightning hit her inside the store at 561 Grand Caillou Road, Houma Fire District Chief Joe Mouton said. She was alert as she was quickly taken to the hospital.

“I’ve never heard of anything like that,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Gavin Phillips said.

The lightning most likely was transmitted through the store’s electric system, he added.

A foot-wide blackened tile by a register marked the strike.

“I guess it’s just one in a million,” one store employee said.

The business remained open after the incident, and customers streamed in and out of the store.

The odds of being struck by lightning in an average lifetime are about 1 in 6,250, according to the National Weather Service. In the U.S., there were about 60 people killed and 340 injured by lightning in 2008, the most recent year statistics are available.

  7. After a bad night of not enough sleep, I’m still moving slowly. The coffee helped but I guess I need to actually get moving to activate it.

Not much to say for myself. Have a good day, everyone.

we’ve had some rain and we’re predicted for a lot more but right now the sky is clear and it’s cool. If we get all the rain that’s predicted there will be flooding, so far it’s been okay but there are storms coming for the next couple of days.

It’s cooler – not cool of course, it’s July – but not in the 90s either (although it will be by the time I get off work).  My friend’s recently deceased husband needed more of a keeper than anybody knew until now.  The idiot apparently assumed that since Social Security doesn’t need updates when a person remarries, there was no need to write a new will or change beneficiaries on the life insurance.  Both are still in his 1st wife’s name.  Fortunately she is a good person (“tell me what to sign and I’ll sign it”) and now the only problem is to figure out how to legally fix it, not whether or not said 1st wife was willing to fix it.  We should have known.  When my friend went to the water dept to change the account over to her name, she found that was still in his 1st wife’s name (he’d set it up to pay automatically and the bill went to his email so she never saw it).  She’s at the lawyer’s right now and see’s the retirement counselor this afternoon.  Hold the good thought.  {{{HUG}}} bf

Trying to get motivated this morning. Lots to do, and no “oomph” to do it.

Gonna be a hot one today – 94, hot for Delaware – so I’m glad nearly everything I need to do is inside, with the AC.

not ever work again. What with that, vacations, mine and computer gurus, it may be a while before I can enjoy my Moose chats. My iPad is a bit iffy.  Am only telling you this so that you will not think I have left the herd. these days it is the only refuge for xanity and courtesy. My spirit is willing but my hard drive isn’t. Will check in when I can. Best to all,.

Another sunny day in Bellingham…I’m antsy for rain! Our grandson couldn’t sleep last night, so neither did I….::yawn:: He will sleep late today, and I’ll be looking for a nap.

We ran non-stop all day at the Center today, so I wasn’t able to participate in any of the discussion threads after about 6:45 this morning, until just a bit ago (it’s now nearing 4:00 p.m. PDT).

I’m just catching my breath with a Diet Dr. Pepper before locking up and heading home.
