On This Day

In 1811, Venezuela declared its independence from Spain.

In 1865, the Salvation Army was founded in London’s East End by William Booth.

In 1934, in San Francisco, police fired into a crowd of striking longshoremen, killing two of them. This is now remembered as “Bloody Thursday.”

In 1937, Hormel introduced its meat-like substance, Spam, to an unsuspecting world.

In 1948, England gained health care for all under the National Health Service Acts.

In 1975, Arthur Ashe defeated Jimmy Connors, becoming the first African American to win a Wimbledon singles title.

In 1989, for his part in the Iran-Contra Affair, Oliver North was given a three-year suspended prison sentence, two years of probation, a $150,000 fine and 1200 hours of community service, but his convictions were later overturned due to immunity issues.

In 1996, Dolly the Sheep was born to her surrogate mother. She was cloned using the DNA of one sheep, the egg of another, which was then implanted in the surrogate. She only lived 6 years.

In 1999, President Clinton imposed economic sanctions on the Taliban.

In 2006, Kenneth Lay, Enron founder and destroyer, conveniently died of heart disease just before he was to attend his sentencing for his conviction. His conviction was later vacated (just in case he turns up later). 😉

If you need a palate cleanser after that: 5 Things You Haven’t Heard About That Will Make You Proud To Be An American

    – Domestic workers are receiving much-needed protections.

    – States have woken up to the dangers of gun violence.

    – A forward march for paid leave policies.

    – The DOMA decision is fueling a new push for marriage equality.

    – Transgender people can change their Social Security record’s gender identity.

She also won doubles titles, and trophies for singles and doubles in all 4 grand slam events. A streak of dynamite, ’56-’58..

Arthur Ashe was what the tennis brats were not.

  3. Gee

Blue skies, but the air is still heavy.

Have you ever eaten Spam? Did you enjoy it?

Who would you like to have cloned?

Do you think Ken Lay is really dead?

It’s International Chicken Wing Day. What is your favorite kind? Buffalo? Thai Wing of Angel? Some other?

Spam, yes.  It’s OK fried.  But I like scrapple better.

I’m trying to think of why I’d want to clone anyone.  Sounds like it might be a nefarious plan.

OK, I’m not up on the latest news, I guess.  Whazzup?

Lulu makes some good ones.  Don’t know what the style is.  They’re not spicy-hot.

  4. Floja Roja

Have you ever eaten Spam? Did you enjoy it?

My mother, a product of the Depression, used to toss it in stuff (salads, for instance). I hated it. Then I tried it fried, and that was OK, it helped the texture a lot.

Who would you like to have cloned?

No-one, since the personality can’t be cloned, and that is the only thing really worth cloning.

Do you think Ken Lay is really dead?

I’m not big into CT, but I have to say his timing was auspicious.

It’s International Chicken Wing Day. What is your favorite kind? Buffalo? Thai Wing of Angel? Some other?

Buffalo, Anchor Bar recipe as first made for me by my Buffalonian roommate back in ’79 or so. Frank’s hot sauce a must.

  5. Gee

1956 – Terry Chimes, English drummer (The Clash, Generation X, Hanoi Rocks, and Cowboys International)

Wow, he got around, huh?  I love Cowboys International, and of course, Gen X and the Clash are well known.  I don’t think I’ve actually heard Hanoi Rocks, though.

  6. Its the Supreme Court Stupid

Have you ever eaten Spam? Did you enjoy it? Yes and NO!

Who would you like to have cloned? Woody Allen.  Can you imagine him interviewing himself?

Do you think Ken Lay is really dead?  Absolutely NOT.  I saw him just the other day dispensing gas with Elvis.

It’s International Chicken Wing Day. What is your favorite kind? Buffalo? Thai Wing of Angel? Some other?  Buffalo Wings

  7. Gee

    1948 – Carole Landis, American actress (b. 1919)

That… headpiece… reminds me of the joke in the Woody Allen movie Love and Death, where he says that so-and-so bought a “little piece of land and built a house on it,” and the camera cuts to a guy with a little handful of sod and a little tiny house built on it.

Well, you had to be there…

  8. I agree.

Like many, Isa is finding the last gasps of the Republican Party to be very popcorn-worthy.

This morning there was yet another “what will the Republicans do about the Voting Rights Act???!!??” article. The RNC wants to show their inclusiveness so that they can win national elections but the state legislatures, who really don’t care about presidential politics, will have none of it. The southern states call it slander to point out their racism and Ken Cuccinelli, running for governor in a state that three years ago celebrated the confederacy (and slavery), says that “institutional racism is dead” .

Yes, and there is a bridge in Brooklyn that I don’t own which I will sell you. Just wire the money to my Nigerian bank account. ***SPAM***.

p.s. That papillon trying to save her owner from Makeup Mishaps is one of the noble rescue breeds like the St. Bernard. Unfortunately a dog that small cannot carry a large enough keg of rescue liquor to soothe the embarrassment from too much rouge.

I’m on it!  To tell the truth, though, every day is my own Personal Chocolate Day.

Too much work for too little reward. But I’d have to admit that they are better than Spam.

  11. Have you ever eaten Spam? Did you enjoy it?

    Yes, no.

Who would you like to have cloned?

    Nobody. I think  it’s a bad idea.

Do you think Ken Lay is really dead?

Yes, but Francisco Franco is actually alive.

It’s International Chicken Wing Day. What is your favorite kind? Buffalo? Thai Wing of Angel? Some other?

Buffalo wings with fairly spicy sauce.

Have you ever eaten Spam? Did you enjoy it?

I think so, as a kid — I sort of have a vague memory of having eaten it. But I don’t remember having a strong opinion.

Who would you like to have cloned? Neil Gaiman. Bono. 2 or 3 Peter Higgs & Amy Manzieners & Neil de Grasse Tysons & Brian Greenes would be good. Nelson Mandela & Desmond Tutu. Did I mention Bono? Because they need to make enough for me to get 1, too.

Do you think Ken Lay is really dead?

When I really think of my theology, I don’t believe in Hell. Either Divinity is loving & forgiving of all, or S/He isn’t Divinity as I choose to name It. That said, Ken Lay is most definitely roasting in the 9th circle of Hell. (actually, I remember reading about the Muslim version of Hell – this was a long time ago, so the memory is vague — and I hope he is suffering what I read about then)

It’s International Chicken Wing Day. What is your favorite kind? Buffalo? Thai Wing of Angel? Some other? Morningstar Farms spicy veg buffalo wings, with jalapeno ranch sauce.
