Sunday All Day Check-in for the Herd: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the Weather Critter Comment are still welcome. 🙂

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least content.

On weekends (and holidays), you may find the check-in thread earlier or later than normal because … it is the weekend! Moosies need their beauty rest:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

The Recommended list, defined:

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture.

– The Rec list algorithm, per Kysen:

The Rec List is based upon number of recs and number of days on the list.

The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

Don’t use the Recommendation button as a ‘I read this and I like it’ indicator….you can say that in the comments and by rating the comments contained within the diary.

– Per me:

… any post that reflects our values and gets us to think about who we are and our place in the world is valuable to progressives.

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

You can follow the daily moosetrails here: Motley Moose Recent Comments.

Let the greetings begin!

  1. After a meta discussion about the Recommended list, my check-in boilerplate was changed. Note these two changes:

Feel free to continue the discussion here.

  2. I’m enjoying a concert this morning featuring improv by catbird, percussion by woodpecker, and other players cardinal, mourning doves, wren, and others.

Weather is scattered rain, 65 degrees heading to mid-70s. Still in this pattern of a little wetter and a little cooler. We might get out for a walk but maybe not.

Jim’s a little under that weather this morning, feeling like he has a cold. We’re supposed to go to Illinois for a family thing but might not. Guess we’ll need to decide “soon.”

Thanks to those who read/commented in the meta diary. I found it helpful and enlightening. My history hear and with blogs generally is short, so this helps fill in some of the background.

Friday, in response from someone’s question on a quilting site, I published this description of the graduation quilt I made for my son. Photos included, of course.

    Everyone have a great day!

I got in a swim near dawn and found myself in the pool with 2 frogs…was funny to see them darting beneath me as I did my laps. I scooped em when done and walked ’em to their fish pond home  (we have a salt water pool and we scoop ’em out just about every summer morning).

I wish it were Saturday…I could use another weekend day before Monday arrives.

    Hope all are well…

here in the desert, cool and a few clouds. The storms are over for now so we’ll be heating up. Mr w and the old dog returned and Grace was so happy to see them. She couldn’t wait to show them what she’d learned while they were gone. Mr w also reports that she grew in size as well. Puppies are a lot of fun to make up for all the work. House training seems to be staying at 75%, every day there’s just that moment when I’m not paying attention and neither is she.

Hope all is well. Denise has a terrific article about FLOTUS on dailykos that I hope she posts over here.

A small comment on the fluff pieces. I like them because they personalize the bloggers i may not ever have the pleasure of meeting in real life. Secondly my participation in political blogs had gone down  significantly,  the fluff pieces allow me to comment more freely..

Another foggy morning here. We never did get the sunny afternoon promised yesterday by the weatherfolk, but I managed to have a good day in the park anyway. At one point we stumbled upon a brass band festival in the Music Concourse and sat to listen to a few numbers. The bandshell there has been the site of concerts since 1901, and there was a previous bandshell before that, so music in the park is a grand old tradition. The festival continues today and I may walk over again to hear some more music this afternoon.

Hope everyone has a nifty Sunday!

  8. Working mainly on the computer today trying to get stuff caught up. Finally over the nasty intestinal garbage but still dealing with the sinus infection. At least I can eat normally now. I’m making a small roast for dinner so I can have beef sandwiches for lunch this week.

Really down lately. I just had the anniversary of my Mom’s death a week ago and Dad’s a couple of weeks before. My brother Mike’s is coming up. I really wish I could talk to my Dad and get some advice and feedback from him.

One of Dad’s favorite songs was Ghost Riders in the Sky.

NYC. Hope all is well throughout Mooseland. Am about to read Maureen Dowd and will soon be in a bad mood.

    1.  It’s 65 degrees outside already and the Weather Channel has been underestimating its projections for high temps all week, so while it says 82, I am expecting us to break 90 again, as we have been doing consistently.

    2.  I woke up with a sore throat and running a low-grade fever, so I rolled back over and went back to sleep for a couple of extra hours.  I sing the Mass on Sundays, so I’m going to have to stop by Walgreens and pick up some benzocaine lozenges to make it through the service.  And, having the practical end covered, offer extra prayers to St. Cecilia, patron of musicians.  At least the Gregorian setting for this time of year is the Orbis Factor, which doesn’t wander too far out of my limited vocal range.

    3.  I’m a play by the rules kinda guy, so no, I did not hit the rec button on this diary, even though, yes, I would like to see it on the rec list where it is handy for me to return to it through the day, and where I think it does represent this community well to visitors and newcomers.  After all, it’s where I landed as a visitor, and where I’ve stuck around almost exclusively as a newcomer.  The comment threads in this series have even prompted me to consider some topics on which to write and post diaries here, when the time seems right.  Dang, I hate meta.  It’s one of the reasons I’ve sought refuge here.

My friend and I had a conversation about that yesterday, and it got me to thinking. I might get some fun entertainment out of buying, say, one ticket a week. I wouldn’t be expecting to actually win anything (though that would be very nice!) but rather merely for amusement. Seems like it would spice up my routine a bit. 🙂

Yesterday’s “easy drive” to our daughters home in Edmonds, Wa for a birthday lunch got loooong due to the slow detour around the Skagit River Bridge. We should have taken the longer rural route…the scenery would have been much more enjoyable.

We had a very nice day regardless but I’m really tired this morning.

hardwood?  I know someone here has.  I can get the linoleum up fine; it is the mastic I need help with:

    1) how much of it do I need to get up before sanding?  “Most of” is not particularly helpful.

    2) I’ve read mineral spirits works but can cause the mastic to seep into the wood thereby discoloring it.  I’ve already used some mineral spirits so I might be screwed here but I won’t continue if this is a huge problem.

    3) I’ve read boiling water works so long as you don’t let it sit long enough to warp the floor.  How long is that?  Minutes or hours?  I tried this method real quickly this morning and it seems to work although boiling water cools quite quickly so it takes awhile to do a small space.

    4) I will quit doing 2) and 3) depending on how much “most of” equals.  Don’t need to expend more time and effort than necessary but I don’t want to do a half-assed job and then spend a bunch of time sanding (through the floor).

    Thank you!!

…that I’m about to get ready to leave for the brass band festival in the park.

I put the “All Day” into Sunday All Day Check-in. 😉

Been really busy with a major story I posted a little while ago on the Jonathan Turley blog. I have been researching this all week, which has been a challenge since I have felt like warmed over….never mind. Story is about the Border Patrol rousting ordinary people with private planes at airports as far from the border as Oklahoma and Iowa.

Cloudy today. I did not get to go to the antique stationary engine show. It rained all day Friday and finally stopped Saturday morning. That field they were having it in would have been one big mud bog.  Maybe next year.

  16. He said the university confirms he fulfilled all the requirements for his master’s degree. YAY!

You’d think it wouldn’t be in question. However I know one 66-year-old man who thought he’d earned his BS many years ago. And when it turned out he had not, by a fraction of a credit, he all of a sudden was eligible for the draft. For Viet Nam.

So it’s something we don’t take for granted here!
