Thursday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least content.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

You can follow the daily moosetrails here: Motley Moose Recent Comments.

p.s. There is no need to Recommend this diary … a Fierce on my Fierce Weather Check-in is attention enough. Meeses actually do know where to find us! 🙂

Let the greetings begin!

    predicted again for today.

Yesterday the boom of thunder was so loud it shook the house and both dogs leaped on top of me quivering

Am up responding to emails from students about “why” they got the grades I gave them yesterday.

You would think it would be obvious that if the final research paper (which is the final exam) required for the course required 15 pages as a minimum, and you submitted a 10 page paper instead you won’t be getting an A, B, or C.

On another note – have decided to write about NYC Mayoral race for Sunday.  I really distrust all the pundits predicting a win for Quinn.

Iowa.  It’s almost a long weekend.  Going to see Star Trek this afternoon.

I’m nervous/anxious about something.  Not quite sure what it is….. economy, job (am I really doing well, can I remember all the damned hoops that one must go through, will I ever remember how everything works in the system, I bet K is getting really tired of holding my hand on stuff….., etc….)  It’s not that I can’t do the work, I can.  It’s all the other stuff.  I need a long weekend.  Better yet, win the lottery!!  (I had 3 of the numbers from last Saturday’s drawing)

Today is one of my fast days, so I have to keep busy and not think about food.

Off to the dentist this morning for some “work” they’re dying to do. That’ll take my mind off food for sure. Then will put in a few hours this afternoon working for the campaign of a local candidate for the state legislature.

My neck is bright red again from some sort of insect poison. I didn’t even know I was being bitten! Luckily the dermatologist gave me a tube of stuff for such contingencies.

And to think I was looking forward to summer! Oh, well.

    Everyone have a good Thursday!

Cold and rainy here this morning.  Rain to stop by lunchtime and then sunny but we may get a frost tonight!  Looking forward to the weekend.  Picked out the swingset for the kids.  They sure are lucky to have such nice parents.

Today:  grocery store and PLAY, I have also promised that they can watch Tom and Jerry at some point.

but still for the moment. We’re supposed to get hot enough to spark up thunderstorms this afternoon, since we need rain I’m ready to put up with thunder and lightening. However I must add that the scariest lightening I’ve ever seen in my life happened out here. The NWS called it “deadly cloud-to-ground lightening” but what it looked like was a bolt of lightening lying on the ground sparking from one edge of our property to the other-that literally had me shaking in my boots.

Yawn. Cooler here the next few days. Not supposed to break 60 on Friday, low 60’s Saturday. So of course the community has the pool grand opening party scheduled Saturday. No-one will want to swim but there’s free food so I imagine some folks will show up.

trs has to work, so Kidlet and I will definitely stop by to harrass him and make him cook us a burger (such a loving family he has).

  7. Jim’s off to work; Son is probably still asleep.

Last evening the black cat visited. You might remember a few weeks ago, when I was bringing groceries in, a completely black cat came to visit. He rolled in my driveway asking for rubbing, which I indulged. He was a little skittish, though, and snagged my thumb with his claw. (It healed easily with no issues.)

He was back last night. When Son was leaving to go to the gym, he stepped out the front door and immediately back in. “Come see what’s out here,” he said. We went out quietly to the front porch, only to see the cat dozing on the padded bench. He looked for all the world like he was at home.

He stretched and yawned as I approached, and pushed his head into my hand to be petted. I petted and rubbed around his face and jaw, down to his neck and shoulders.

Finally I felt the slightest vibrations from his neck, not quite to purring, but at least evincing pleasure. Last time he visited he didn’t purr, either.

His ears showed pink lines, scars from hostile encounters. His fur was dirty, not grimy but full of dust, as before. No collar to show where he belongs, but he is sturdy, seems to have regular meals.

And then I went in and washed well, as I am allergic to cats and dogs. Oh but I do like cats…

Weather today: it’s about 55 now and might add 10 more degrees. Quite cloudy right now, but Mr Hourly says it will clear completely by nightfall. It’s damp and very breezy now, too.

Today I get back to my food pantry routine. I skipped last week as we had some other things going on.

going to do much except make pico de gallo this am, then clean up the kitchen (I am one messy cook).  In this case it will just be diced onions and jalapeños which  fly everywhere when I wield a knife.  I now know that I’m officially an old sissy because I’ve started wearing gloves to chop hot peppers, something I’ve not done ever.

  9. pittiepat

me.  Guess it knows Spanish because it inserted the tilda over the “n” in jalapeño all by itself.  Neat.

I mentioned I was going to the coast this past weekend. It was close to the beach. Very different vibe from FL. beaches. To me, most Florida beaches have a tropical paradise vibe, but Texas coast is a wildlife preserve and it shows. Still it was nice.

Pic of our view of the ocean from our rental.

  11. raina

My heel pain had been getting worse and worse. There was a point when I was on the beach and I was limping so bad. Dr injected cortisone into the heel. Oh man, that hurt, but no pain now except for a bit of soreness from the needle.

I go back next week to get another shot for my PITA. Dr thinks it may be an inflamed joint, not sciatica nerve pain as the other dr thought. Could explain why the exercises didn’t work for me. It would be nice to be able to sleep comfortably in bed for once.

    Sucks getting old.

    to the west (predicted rain is tomorrow but it may have decided to come in early).  I don’t think I remembered to tell everybody I’d be out yesterday and tomorrow.  (I know – it says right up at the top “let your peeps know where you are”. Sorry about that.)  I’ve given myself 2 belated Mother’s Day presents (Momma would have enjoyed them, but she hasn’t been around for 24-1/2 years so I took a friend instead, and my kids would have been delighted to give them to me if they’d known about them and could have afforded them) – the Norman Rockwell exhibit at Crystal Bridges yesterday and the excursion train from Springdale to Van Buren and back tomorrow.  I love Rockwell – he reminds me of the America we could be and are trying to become and every once and a while I need the reminder.  I’ve never been on an excursion train so I’ll report back next Tuesday (which will be the next time I’ll be online after I leave work today).  Hope to check back later, but I’ve got both to catch up from yesterday and clear the desk for tomorrow.  {{{HUGS}}}

Irritable today.  Bad commute & stupid things going on at work due to re-orgs isn’t helping my mood.

BTW, has anyone heard from Dear Occupant?  It feels like it’s been ages since I’ve seen his name in these parts.  Hope everything is OK.

  15. slksfca

Can’t settle down and concentrate on anything, not even on lying down. Just fidgety. Maybe I should take another, longer walk. I have a friend who lives in a warmer part of the City; maybe I’ll text her and see what she’s up to today. It would be fun to get out of my neighborhood rut and hang out with someone…

  16. trying to incorporate new information into my understanding of things. It doesn’t have anything to do with me directly, but could have impact on me. That sounds contradictory but in fact is not. One thing is for sure, the story gets more and more complicated. Like a really badly written soap opera. No happy ending in sight…
