Thursday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least content.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

You can follow the daily moosetrails here: Motley Moose Recent Comments.

Let the greetings begin!

54 with an expected high of 76. Hit or miss rain showers are forecast with a rumble of thunder for good measure.

How are you doing today Miss JanFab?

Up early again, but at least it’s not a “dark night of the soul.” Those are not fun. This I can deal with. 🙂

Current temperature is in the low 50s; high today will reach the mid-60s.

Dearly Beloved just checked the United Airlines app on his phone–the honeymooners’ plane left Rome two hours late, which means I’ll have time to do Lemon Pasta with Asparagus and Pine Nuts for a light dinner. Their plane is supposedly landing at 5 p.m. Still trying to think of a light, airy, not-too-caloric finish–have a feeling I’ll have to invent my own.

Got to rush off to the doctor in less than an hour to find how (I hope) how to treat the mysterious skin diseases I seem to be harboring on my face and hands–for no good reason.

Well my vet doctor visit yesterday was the pits. My white blood cell count was low. I take a steroid daily, which should make it high (and it has been in the past) but now suddenly it’s pretty significantly low.

So now lots more tests to figure out why. Did I mention I’m needle-phobic?

  5. I have Windows 7 on my laptop. Dell keeps desperately sending me emails, checking to see if my 3 year-old computer isn’t just too too old, and don’t I want a new one? Uh, no.

On the other hand, technology that works… See this article about an “augmented reality” statue at the University of Illinois, that a great friend of mine helped build.

The university is doing restoration on a statue on campus. Students have a tradition of having their photos taken with the statue on graduation. But the statue is gone. Taking it’s place is the augmented reality. Think Star Wars holograms, without the static.

    My friend said to me,

I think the coolest part of it is that it is THERE. It is full size and it is THERE. You can walk all around it and see it from all perspectives, you can get on a ladder and see it from above, but it is THERE.

As for me, I can barely conceive what he’s talking about, so a road trip is in order, I think. Jim would be amazed and fascinated, having worked with some early holograms that Fermilab was playing with, decades ago.

Today I go to the pantry for my volunteer shift. They love me there, which helps my ego. And I get to help at the same time. Win win.

And errands and sewing. Yesterday I said I’d make a quilt. Well, it’s not done, but I cut most of it yesterday and got a big chunk of the hardest sewing done already. It’s a pretty simple project so going quickly.

    Y’all have a great day.

Grace went for her second round of puppy shots yesterday which includes a dose of worm medicine so she didn’t have a successful night in her crate. The dr. was very pleased with her growth, she gained just over a pound in three weeks and is developing normally. She probably will stay a small dog, 8-10 pounds, and looks to be a dauschund/chihuahua mix. The vet told me that it looked good that she won’t have the back problems of dauschunds or the mouth problems of chihuahuas which was good to hear. I couldn’t participate in the tech discussion because mr w takes care of all of that. We are a mac family with two notebooks and a desktop, I never found PCs intuitive like macs for what that’s worth. I personally don’t believe testimony from luddites could ever be worth a whole lot.

trees are growing nicely.  Bushes are leafing out nicely and so are the hosta, day lilies, and iris.

Fifties going to mid sixties in westmont today.  My daughters last ballet class prior to the spring recital is today.  She is psyched.  I will be glad for the break.  But, she will start piano this summer.  I’m sure there will be another recital to go with that.  My son (two). Is just along for the ride at the point.  As long as there is a matchbox car, he is happy.

Dentist appointments later today.  Fun fun fun.

Yesterday I took all 3 kittehs to the vet, one at a time since I have only one carrier (that’s why I wasn’t online yesterday). Y’all know there’re problems with Reggie and Charlie.  I left Reggie at the vet’s.  They have a good adoption program and have never not placed although it sometimes takes a while.  Dr. Wright said there would be no problem whatsoever with placing a big, healthy, loving kitteh like Reg.  Really loving – Reggie hops in your lap the minute you sit down and puts his paws around your neck.  I don’t like it and I miss him already, but yesterday morning he chased Charlie off the litter box and that just won’t work.  Reggie, Charlie, and Cloud have all been developing some bad habits of behavior as this situation has escalated.  Last night was very relaxed (even though Cloud went periodically looking for Reggie).  Charlie and Cloud gently wrestled a little bit and Charlie spent some time on my lap.  I have to keep telling myself that this is the best way to deal with a bad situation because I want Reggie back, but it really is the best for all three kittehs. Hope the meese had a grand Wednesday and are starting into a lovely Thursday.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

So now I can stay indoors do what I need to. Yesterday was soooo busy. The grand girls made Mother’s Day cards, and Teacher Appreciation cards, and helped plant the garden, and hard math homework, and random art and computer projects. Today will be much calmer.

  11. Another beautiful day in S. Cal.  I should have come in the last couple of days when we had what passes for us as weather in about a quarter of an inch of rain.

So, did we see the video out of Ohio where two police officers  get ambushed by a dude with an automatic weapon?  Horrible of course he got killed one of the officers was wounded, but I always seem to notice things our media just doesn’t get.  Lazy lazy lazy American media who does their research through YouTube basically.  Anyway toward the end when the shooter is down and they’re still kind of shooting at him a bystander begins conversation “I have a pistol”  Did anyone else catch that?  The male cop had to shout at him to call for back up get help, but we had one of those “good people with a gun” and homeboy knew not what in the fuck to do and basically was paralyzed from doing what he should have which was call for help.

I would post the video, but at this point it’s just violent porn to me basically.  However check it out and tell me if you hear it etc.

  13. Spent yesterday sleeping and will spend most of today in bed too. Head not quite as congested but lungs aching like crazy. Plus I pulled a muscle in my side coughing. The codeine is stopping the cough so I can rest. Pixie is playing nurse by helping me take naps. She is such a funny girl. Sunny today for a change but thunderstorms coming in on Saturday. This picture is called Stormy Weather.

Then I spent an hour watching movie trailers on my Kindle. Lunch is pasta salad with a mild pesto sauce. Putting laundry off ’til tomorrow as I’m going to watch The King’s Speech this afternoon on the Kindle. $3.99 to rent in all its HD glory. 🙂
