  1. One Boston Suspect Dead, Another At Large After Night of Violence

WATERTOWN, Mass. (AP) – One of two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing is dead after the killing of a university officer and a shootout with police, and a massive manhunt is underway for the other, authorities said early Friday.

Police are locking down some neighborhoods in Boston and its western suburbs as they search for the remaining suspect: known as the man in the white hat from marathon surveillance footage.

Authorities urged residents in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Allston-Brighton neighborhoods of Boston to stay indoors. All mass transit was shut down and businesses were asked not to open Friday. People waiting at bus and subway stops were told to go home.

“We believe this to be a terrorist,” said Boston Police Commissioner Ed David

Went to bed early last night.  What a scary night for Boston.  Thanks for the links and news, I’ve got to catch myself up.

I just woke up to this sad and alarming news. The west coast seems far away, but less lonely when I can check in and find this discussion.

  5. Boston Bombing Victim in Iconic Photo Helped Identify Attackers

Just before 3 p.m. on April 15, Bauman was waiting among the crowd for his girlfriend to cross the finish line at the Boston Marathon. A man wearing a cap, sunglasses and a black jacket over a hooded sweatshirt looked at Jeff, 27, and dropped a bag at his feet, his brother, Chris Bauman, said in an interview.

Two and a half minutes later, the bag exploded, tearing Jeff’s legs apart. A picture of him in a wheelchair, bloodied and ashen, was broadcast around the world as he was rushed to Boston Medical Center. He lost both legs below the knee.

“He woke up under so much drugs, asked for a paper and pen and wrote, ‘bag, saw the guy, looked right at me,'” Chris Bauman said yesterday in an interview.

It is actually quite amazing to have this crime solved so quickly. Incredible police work.

to the US with their family in 2002 or 2003.  The dead suspect did indeed win a scholarship.  There is so much going on behind the scenes I think we’ll know a lot more before too long.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A U.S. law enforcement official and the uncle of the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings are confirming that the name of the second suspect is Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older brother of Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a gun battle with police in Massachusetts overnight.

Three law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation, confirmed the bomb suspects were brothers. One of the officials and the men’s uncle confirmed the identity of Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

The uncle, Ruslan Tsarni of Montgomery Village, Md., told The Associated Press that the men lived together near Boston and have been in the United States for about a decade. They traveled here together from the Russian region near Chechnya.end of story marker

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Dead Bombing Suspect: “I Don’t Have a Single American Friend

    http://www.slate.com/blogs/wei

Police have identified Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, as the “black hat” bombing suspect, killed during the manhunt that followed. Readers have pointed out that Johannes Hirn made Tsarnaev the subject of a photo essay, “Will Box for Passport,” taken before the boxer competed at National Golden Gloves competition in Salt Lake City. The captions give us a micro-profile of the suspect.

Tamerlan, who studies at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston and wants to become an engineer, took the semester off from school to train for the competition.

Tamerlan fled Chechnya with his family because of the conflict in the early 90s, and lived for years in Kazakhstan before getting to the United States as a refugee.

Originally from Chechnya, but living in the United States since five years, Tamerlan says: “I don’t have a single American friend, I don’t understand them.”

last night and wake up to a manhunt in Cambridge and lo and behold they are related.  Who the Hell robs a 7-11 just hours after their photos are broadcast all over the place?  I have to assume (!) they wanted to make some grand statement before it was too late.

escape although I’ve also read black hat detonated an IED strapped to his chest.

And apparently Ted Turner needs to buy back CNN before it goes completely to shit.

The FBI is questioning the bombing suspect’s uncle Here Near DC in Montgomery Village. Gotta be within a couple of miles. I’m changing my plans for the day; there are going to be FBI SUVs gathered and probably news crews. Not going out into it.

The woman said she hadn’t seen either of the brothers in several years.

But when asked about Dzhokhar Tsarnaev – currently the subject of a massive manhunt in the greater Boston area – the woman had just a few words, in spite of her shock.

    “He’s an amazing child.”

waiting to find out when they can leave their homes.

With AMTRAK and local area transit shut-down, no cabs…people are holed up in homes wanting to know when they can go out.

What we know of Tsarnaev story so far could be told as one of dislocation, displacement, statelessness rather than evil FROM somewhere

and is pissed off – he said his family has nothing to do with that family and said if this had anything to do with radical Islam – someone messed up the mind of the nephew.
