Interrogatories

As the nights warm up (well, for some of us), and windows are cracked open, all the outside sounds of night and morning come in (doing battle with the indoor sounds). What night and early morning sounds, natural or otherwise, keep you awake and cause annoyance? What sounds please you and help you to relax and fall asleep? If you could take your family on a time travel vacation, where and when  would you go (remember, it should be fun for the whole family)?  What kind of empanada would you like to have for National Empanada day?

In 1820, the famed statue known as Venus de Milo was discovered on the Aegean island of Melos.

In 1952, President Harry Truman called for the government seizure of all domestic steel mills to prevent a nationwide strike.

Bad sounds for me are my neighbor’s “water feature” (which fortunately is not left on all night) which sounds like someone left a faucet on instead of the soothing sound it should have. Dripping taps, loud conversations, cat fights…

Good sounds are fog horns, train whistles, rain, purring cats.

  2. What night and early morning sounds, natural or otherwise, keep you awake and cause annoyance? Very loud birds

What sounds please you and help you to relax and fall asleep? The ocean

If you could take your family on a time travel vacation, where and when  would you go (remember, it should be fun for the whole family)? The opening of the first Disneyland

What kind of empanada would you like to have for National Empanada day? Not really picky. I would just check my fridge and make one out of what I have on hand.

  3. Gee

I did, in fact, crack a window open last night, and this morning I was able to go out in short sleeves, with no jacket of any kind!  Yaaaaaay!

I used to live near a street corner with a street light, and there was a mockingbird that loved to sit there and sing in the middle of the night.  Oh, and I used to have neighbors who would let their dogs out to relieve themselves very early in the morning.  Yap yap yap yap!

I find wind and rain relaxing.  I guess they’re kind of like white noise.

Man, you ask the greatest questions on a brain-dead Monday morning!  🙂  I’ve got to think about the time travel vacation.  Kitty Hawk, 1903, maybe.

Mmmm, empanadas.  One of each, please.

At first, I thought this woman had been pierced by an arrow.  Then I thought she was roasting a marshmallow.  I’m still not sure what she’s sleeping through.

1947 – Tom DeLay, American exterminator, lousy dancer, and felon

He’s still very high on my list of Worst People, even though he’s more or less out of power.

  6. What night and early morning sounds, natural or otherwise, keep you awake and cause annoyance?

    Car alarms. Sirens.

What sounds please you and help you to relax and fall asleep?

None. I like quiet. However, I know one woman who moved from NYC to rural Massachusetts and used a tape of street noise to help her fall asleep.

If you could take your family on a time travel vacation, where and when  would you go (remember, it should be fun for the whole family)?

The present day, not sure where. Life in the past was worse in most ways (depending how far back you go).

What kind of empanada would you like to have for National Empanada day?

What are the choices? I wikipediaed it and there are lots! Maybe mondongo!

  7. slksfca

…by a mourning dove who’d made a nest on my back porch. There are certainly worse alarm clocks.

  8. Its the Supreme Court Stupid

What night and early morning sounds, natural or otherwise, keep you awake and cause annoyance? Damned screeching of those f#@king owls!

What sounds please you and help you to relax and fall asleep? Strangely (for many), crickets.

If you could take your family on a time travel vacation, where and when  would you go (remember, it should be fun for the whole family)? The opening of Disneyland in the 50s

What kind of empanada would you like to have for National Empanada day?  Spicey Pork

  9. anotherdemocrat

What night and early morning sounds, natural or otherwise, keep you awake and cause annoyance? parking lot noise – see below (also, the cd I use to make the noise has to only have what it says — no music or other stuff, just ocean waves or rain)

What sounds please you and help you to relax and fall asleep? I sleep with an ocean waves CD on constant repeat. Reason one, because when there’s no noise, my mind will make stuff up & wake me up, reason 2 is to cover parking lot noise. If you are ever designing a condo complex, do not but one unit’s bedroom window right by a different unit’s parking space.

If you could take your family on a time travel vacation, where and when  would you go (remember, it should be fun for the whole family)?  Well, all the family I have left is my brother. Probably Europe in the Dark Ages, or before. Or Cambodia during the time they built & used Ankor Wat. I’d vote for pre-history Ireland. He’d go where I wanted (I’m the little sister, have trained him well)

What kind of empanada would you like to have for National Empanada day? don’t like empanadas

  10. Avilyn

What night and early morning sounds, natural or otherwise, keep you awake and cause annoyance?

Night sounds – the loud drunks at the bar across the street.

Morning – my husband’s radio alarm

What sounds please you and help you to relax and fall asleep?

The sound of the dryer running.

If you could take your family on a time travel vacation, where and when would you go (remember, it should be fun for the whole family)?

Well, the whole family is me & my husband, so just needs to be fun for us.  Dunno, something relating to early computers probably.

What kind of empanada would you like to have for National Empanada day?  Err, what’s an empanada? (serious question)

This Gillian Welch tune was performed solo by Sarah Jarosz as the opening number at her Senior Recital for Bachelor of Music Degree in Contemporary Improvisation, Sat. night March 30, 2013.

I love her music…..it’s going to be fun to watch her career develop.

The Tea Party: God’s judgment on us for teaching our parents how to use the Internet.

Pleasant sounds to wake up to–My kitty’s purring or rain on the roof…Not so pleasant, my youngest son’s love affair with AC/DC or Metallica first thing in the morning..Oy!

Sounds to relax to…ocean sounds or rain on the roof.

Time travel…After watching Victoria House on PBS and seeing people who loved the idea of life in the Victorian period endure a near melt down when they had to live it up close and personal..I think I’d skip that notion. I’d probably chose to take my family back to my childhood strong hold, my grandparent’s farm in Lenoir NC.

Empandas…I’ve had the Philippines version and I loved them. I make a kind of Cornish Pastie similar to an empanda for my football watching guys.

Bad sound: I have a loud mockingbird outside my window in the morning sometimes. If you ever see anyone frown and say “There’s this bird…” just say “It’s a mockingbird.”

Good sound: One or another group of black guys sometimes talk on the steps or in the parking lot in the evening, not far from all the bedroom windows. I like hearing them joking around. If they get too loud I look out the window and say something like ‘Scuse me, people are trying to sleep. A little quieter please? They say “Sorry” and move farther from the windows.

Other good sounds: Train whistles, kittehs purring, little kids laughing.

Other bad sounds: The ice cream man’s bells-arrggh! Kids arguing, dogs barking, anybody yelling. I hear thise from the other side of the (narrow) valley. But there’s not much of it.
