Out the Back Window – 03-24-13

Today, we awoke to a fresh inch of snow here in east central Iowa. This needs to stop so we can proceed to spring.

We have one more week of March remaining. So far, it has been colder than normal for . The image below is for a NWS station 10 miles north of us. It shows the daily temperature ranges for each date as dark vertical bars. The green band across shows the normal range of highs and lows. Red and light blue are the extremes. Only once did we meet or exceed the normal high on March 14. Click on the image to see the actual daily measurements. Our normal high for March is 47˚. This year’s high has averaged 34˚. Last year averaged 62˚ for the high.

Please offer your observations about the weather this March in your area. Warmer? Colder? Drier? Wetter? About the same?

Sunday All Day Brunch: The Art Wall

Welcome to Sunday All Day Brunch. This is an open topic thread so help yourself to the goodies and sit a spell and let us know what is new in your life. When I moved in I was faced with a long wall in the living room. I put up matted prints of my art work but most of it was old stuff. I decided to take down the old stuff and reuse the mats and put up new work. I have one larger piece and found a place to print it. The rest I can do on my home printer. Currently the art gallery has these pieces.

Happee Caturdai Pootie Diary

Those of you who already either know me or know of me know that I am a massive pootie person. We  moved into an apartment and now have a pootie, named Jenny; however I grew up with both cats & dogs and I love both. I do not discriminate against any animal & love animal photos of all kinds. Please enjoy the following and add any photos that you think the community would like to see. Now, enjoy the photos & have some fun.

On Openness

A very iterative thread in my life is the belief that people don’t suck. Through continuous experience with areas where the factuality of this philosophy has present and practical application this position remains reinforced despite common consensus to the contrary. There may not be anything more defining of my experience other than a consistent resistance to the idea that only by the overbearing hand of God or Law does humanity unwillingly refrain from Perpetual Evil.

Yesterday as in many other typical days there was a conversation much to this point. Talking with a group of industry analysts about “Information Sharing and Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity” (points at the shirt he is wearing: Geeky and Proud) the summary of an hour of challenges and risks comes down to the reality that these systems are not constantly attacked by folks who want to kill Gramma in her old-age home:

Because people just don’t suck that much.

Today, another little artifact crosses my bow which makes me think again of the fallacy of negativity, and to share this note with you here. With a lovely twist of recursive logic on topic the Linkedin Open Source group I manage passes 100,000 members today. This forum for the free sharing on the topic of sharing freely flourishes in the looming absence of almost any of the controls imposed on similar forums. Through the diligent application of virtually none of the effort common wisdom dictates must be exercised, it performs its purpose more effectively and efficiently for a larger population than almost any comparable peer.

Pootie Update; Still Losing Weight

Some of you may remember my earlier diaries, worried about my pootie Fudge:

She had lost a lot of weight, and I got a lot of excellent advice in the First Diary along with some additional advice & lab results in the Second Diary

Now we have the lab results back from Fudge’s followup visit on Thursday to recheck her kidney enzymes.  Here’s the results:

The BUN went down, from 56 to 50.  The Creatinine went down also, from 5.1 to 3.3.  Both are still high and outside the normal range, although they have improved.  Monday should bring the results of the Urine culture & analysis to see if there is any lingering infection.  Unfortunately, her weight was also down about 3/4 of a pound in a month.

Ed Came to Dinner

March 2013

Our friend Ed came to dinner the other night. It was a Tuesday evening small dinner party. We also had friends S & G join us. He is a local musician and instructor of music at our university. She is also a musician and teaches steel drum. Back in the 70s, S was a high school student an hour south of our town. Ed was a teacher at that school. That’s where they met. We have had Ed and S & G over for dinner together once a few years before. A lot happened between that time and this.

Ed looked really good. He said he had gained 20 pounds over the past year. He was hoping his Tai Chi exercises would help him lose some of it. Ed is quite a character. He is single, near 70, and is active physically and mentally. He teaches classes at the local senior center. Like most people, he has some interesting, happy, and sad parts to his life. I want to share with you thoughts I wrote about him and his journey during the most recent years. His journey has taken him to the depths. Now, he seems to be back.

Please join me below for that part of Ed’s story.

Weekly Address: President Obama : Protecting Our Kids from Gun Violence

From the White House – Weekly Address

Three months after the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, President Obama says that the Senate has taken important steps forward to help protect our kids by reducing gun violence. The American people made their voices heard, and the Senate made progress to make it harder for criminals and people with serious mental illnesses to get guns, to crack down on anyone trying to funnel guns to criminals, and to reinstate and strengthen a ban on the sale of military-style assault weapons. Each of these ideas deserves a vote. The President urges Congress to pass these commonsense measures while affirming our nation’s tradition of responsible gun ownership.
