Friday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings and Grazings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

If you are new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh.

– Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does.

– Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment thread gets longer, it takes a bit to reload and the comment may not display as quickly. Clicking the Post button twice posts the comment twice. (h/t Khloe)

– When creating a new diary, remember to choose the Draft option (near the bottom) while you are working on it. Choose the Public option when you want to publish it. (h/t Khloe)

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

And if you are a new moose (or an old moose) looking for a second chance to make a first impression, you can start right here.

UNLESS, you are a Roman Emperor … then it may be too late.

Beware the Ides of March!

15 March:

The Ides of March (Latin: Idus Martii or Idus Martiae) is a day on the Roman calendar that corresponds to March 15.

The Romans did not number days of a month sequentially from the first through the last day. Instead, they counted back from three fixed points of the month: the Nones (5th or 7th, depending on the length of the month), the Ides (13th or 15th), and the Kalends (1st) of the following month.

So Happy Mid-Point of this Most Moosie Month of March!!

34 degrees out this fine morn. Expecting 1-3 inches of snow tonight. Winter’s days are numbers. 4 days until spring!

  2. Will be up to 75 tomorrow and then drop to low 60s. Weather!

Busy three days. Need to do laundry and clean house today, grocery shopping tomorrow and make sauce for niece and family, and St. Patrick’s Day dinner for niece and family Sunday.

34 degrees here, headed for 55.

trs is flying out to Illinois at the crack of dawn tomorrow morning. His sister’s husband passed away yesterday; he had stage 4 cancer but his condition wasn’t such that he had been expected to die so soon. So this was both expected and sudden at the same time.

I’ll miss him, but he’s the sibling closest to his sister. There are 7 kids in the family with an age range of 21 years; Tom and Amy are the youngest and were the only ones still ‘kids’ when their Mom died, so they became very close.

  4. May it be a good day for you all. I will be messing with spreadsheets while at work. Fun Fun Fun.

It will get over 50˚ today here in eastern IA. I hope the sun is out, too. Now it is too early and dark to tell. The hourly forecast chart says probably not.

Son brings the last of his ‘stuff’ from his apt to our basement. His lease is up.

My coffee is ready. See you later today, I hope. Here is our view of the comet two nights ago. Not so impressive.

  5. A little short on sleep here today. I went to bed stewing about something last night, and I woke up with it this morning, too. A nap will work well this afternoon.

I’ve been productive already today, nonetheless. I finishing “loading” my new project on the quilting frame. Today I’ll get started on that. And I got the checkbook up to date. Lots of things still on the list, though, including that nap.

iriti covered my news, so here’s some music for the Ides of March –

from a band out of Berwyn, Illinois…

the weather guy doesn’t think we’ll break the record today but will tomorrow when we’ll be in the low 90s! The bad part is that winter isn’t over yet, there will be at least one more freeze so everything that’s budding will get hit. It’s why we only get fruit about one year out of five. Now those years are wonderful and I spend the summer canning and stocking up for the lean years. I hope the next one comes along while I still have the energy for all that work.

high will be 30 degrees cooler with rain in the forecast.  A busier day than usual for me:  to the rec center for an hour or so in the pool, Humane Society for some pootie lap time and late lunch/early dinner with sister and bil.

sunny day.  This will be nice if we don’t have yesterday’s wind.  Don’t like wind!

Happy because today is a regular eating day and I can have a proper breakfast of grapefruit, whole-wheat toast with marmalade, and more tea. The diet I’m on gives me a headache by the end of the day, but luckily I only have to do it two days a week.

Enough about that. Happy because I cleaned up my office yesterday! Now, if I could only get going on that short story.  Problem is, the plot seems a little over the top. There’s always this question to wrestle with:  should I write about what could happen or what lies within the realm of probability? I’ve got exactly three weeks to write and polish.

Everyone have a good Friday and an even more blissful weekend! The first Formula I race of the season will happen on Sunday in Melbourne, and I’m hoping my guy Hamilton will win.  🙂

29 going to 44 today in Saint Charles.  Rain then snow showers this afternoon.  I have piddly  little errands to run this morning then a play date this afternoon.  Have a great day everyone!

  11. bill d

It should be 82 degrees here today in Fort Worth with a beautiful weekend to follow.

I hope everyone has a good weekend and has a careful St. Patrick’s Day.

  12. nchristine

Last ‘free’ Friday before starting the new job.  Going to lunch with a couple of friends today to celebrate.  Got my mending and altering done yesterday, feels good!!  I think I’m going to have a nap after lunch today.

Today’s high should fall just short of 70°F, meaning low-to-mid-60s out in my neighborhood.

No visits today so I’m on my own. Dangerous! I really want to go out to breakfast or lunch, but I have to be realistic and admit that I’m not quite there yet. Besides, I’ve been happily losing a few pounds on a healthy but rather Spartan diet. Don’t want to start ballooning again now.

Has anyone seen the new Wizard of Oz movie? I think it looks like fun, but I’m afraid it might repel me, or at least not live up to the original. At any rate, I’m waiting for DVD.

    Good Morning, Moosely Snoutages!

We’re having gorgeous weather – highs around 80, clear skies. Since we have a gazillion visitors (SXSW), the clear skies will do, but boy could we use rain. About a month or so.

Today’s plan: pack up my dishes, unpack my mom’s dishes. take the dishes & some household goods to a homeless program (they always have people transitioning into housing). Switch out my tv for my mom’s, which is newer, and give my tv to my best friend. Take a nap.

  15. raina

60 currently with a high of 83 expected. We’re supposed to have a high of 93 on Monday. Dagnabbit, there’s no easing into spring, but a big leap to summer.

  16. princesspat

It’s a go to the pool then do lots of laundry day for me today. I’ve let this week slip away without doing anything I planned to do so I need to “redeem” myself if I can….Ha!

  17. slksfca

…my large coffee mug which cracked recently. So with the smaller one I’m now using, I have to get up and refill more often. It’s annoying, but maybe the added exercise is good for me?

Maybe later today I’ll get down to the neighborhood notions store or the hardware store. I know both places sell a small selection of coffee mugs, so maybe one of them will have what I’m looking for.

Meanwhile, I’m on my x cup of coffee. I’ve literally lost count, but I’m making the stuff weak these days on purpose so I can enjoy drinking more coffee without getting the caffeine jitters. Plus, coffee helps balance out the opiated dullness. 🙂

  18. bwren

Forsythia are blooming! When did that happen?

Mr Bwren’s car is still in the shop. Hmm. We need to haul four people and instruments down to PDX this weekend.

Bill-the-Dog’s lab tests came back normal – hooray!!! He started drinking water again last night, then eating a bit. This morning he was much more steady on his pins, tottering into the kitchen and snuffling at his food bowl while I attempted to eat my own breakfast. Bland food for the next couple of days. A short walk in the woods this afternoon. His Aunties will take care of him when we’re away.

My mom went to school for a legal assistant certificate when she was around 65 & worked at a hoity-toity Houston firm till she was 80. My brother forwarded this from one of her former co-workers.

The news of your mom’s passing just filtered down to us in the Records department where she worked, and we are all so terribly sorry for your loss. What a kind, thoughtful, studious person she was, a real lady. We all have smiles and warmhearted memories of M. I used to live just across from her on Fondren and had the pleasure of visiting her on occasion when she worked here. I still have a gift she gave me one Christmas J and I’ll always keep it and I’ll always think of her.
