The Daily F Bomb, Friday 1/11

Good morning again, Bombers. It’s finally Friday, for which I am thankful.

Yesterday they announced the Oscar nominations. There was once I time that I followed this stuff religiously, and pestered all my friends for screeners and tried to see every single nominee (I never succeeded, but I tried). Today’s controversial questions will focus on these awards.

Oscars: Award of merit or popularity (I mean popularity among the voters, not the public)? Who was the best host of the show? Has there ever been a good musical production number? Who keeps losing that you wish would win? Who keeps winning that you wish would lose? If you could cast “The Women” with denizens of the GOS, who would you cast as what? Wait, don’t answer that!  Should there be a separate category for comedies? Is Floja Roja’s dislike of one sleeved dresses on the red carpet justified? Are the talking heads on the red carpet shows annoying or what?

Now for the Daily Tweetshow (for a good time, check out the hashtag ‪#ConservativeBandNames‬):

Time for your history lesson!

Why I Fight Against Torture

I have been asked to write about why the fight against torture and for accountability is so important to me, so I thought I bring you the series of diaries I have written on “Why I Fight Against Torture”. Aside from this first dairy, it gives the first hand account of what has been done to real live human beings by or assisted by the United States since 9/11.

It is VERY important that we stand up and tell the President and the senators on the committee who will hold the confirmation hearings that Mr. Brennan, who defended the torture authorized by the Bush Administration should not be the next head of the CIA, the organization which committed much of the torture inflicted by the US since 9/11.

On the diary :

My husband, Dan, was a Vietnam Vet who survived torture. He came home with injuries that lasted for the rest of his life. Dan had scars all over his body, where they had cut him, and a trench in the back of his neck, where they had beaten him. His toenails had to be taken off three times when he got back to the US, because the bamboo poisoning was so bad where they had inflicted pain to get him to give them the answers they wanted. Even after the third removal of all of his toenails, the infection was so insidious that it came back and stayed for the rest of his life.

The Evil Lie-beral Algebra Conspiracy

Here’s quick math quiz for you Moose-folk: Cindy has 25 cookies, the government confiscates 21 of the to redistribute to the poor to win votes for reelection, how many more votes will the government thieves get? If Cindy “donates” 6 cookies to a election campaign, how many votes will Cindy get to give her a tax break?

Give up? Well, you’re in luck, because Fox Business host Eric Bolling is here to infrom us all of President Obama and the evil teacher’s unions’ sinister plot for “‘pushing the liberal agenda’ for teaching an algebra lesson about the distributive property”. Yes, we need to beware of the evils of the “distributive property of multiplication”- as opposed to, I guess, the “christian capitalist property of multiplication”.

Don’t even get me started on the outrage of dividing a sum.

The Lounge: Innocent Pumpkin Cookies

I love pumpkin pie. I credit my mother, who looked at the recipe for pumpkin pie and saw pumpkin (a vegetable), eggs, and milk and concluded there was no reason children shouldn’t eat all they want of it. We had unlimited pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving and Christmas and I’ve continued the happy custom with our children.

My passion for pumpkin pie is unabated, but my metabolism alas is not what it was when I was ten. I came up with these cookies as a way to enjoy the best elements of pumpkin pie without slowly expanding to the horizon. Enjoy!

Innocent Pumpkin Cookies

Pre-heat oven to 350 ◦ F

– 3 large eggs

– 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin

– 1/2 cup Splenda (baking kind, with equal volume to sugar)

– ¼ cup xylitol

– 1/2 tsp NaCl

– 2 tsp baking powder

– 1 tsp ground cinnamon

– 1/2 tsp ground ginger

– 1/4 tsp ground cloves

– 1/4 tsp ground allspice

– 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk

– 1 cup (approx) coconut flour, sifted or shaken vigorously to break up clumps

In large bowl beat eggs and stir in pumpkin. Add seasonings and stir in. Add milk and stir. So far, this is basically a pumpkin custard as you would make for a pie.

To thicken into cookie dough, add the coconut flour gradually, about a quarter cup at a time. Stir in completely before adding more. Coconut flour has a lot of fiber and soaks up a lot of liquid, so the potential is there to make lumps. The final cookie dough should be light and hold together for dropping onto a cookie sheet.

Drop onto a cookie sheet covered with baking parchment (with no added fat these cookies would probably stick otherwise). Bake for 24-28 minutes, rotating front to back and between shelves every ten minutes, until the cookies brown a little bit and are firm. With so little sugar in them they do not brown a lot. They take longer than normal cookies because the coconut flour holds so much water. Cool on a rack to let them set.

These cookies are low glycemic, gluten free and rich in complete protein, fiber and calcium. They taste exactly like pumpkin pie ☺ and would make good breakfast cookies.

If you prefer other non-sugar sweeteners, the amount of coconut flour might need to be adjusted up or down to get a texture that allows dropping onto cookie sheets, and the baking time might need adjusting too.

My son’s girl friend describes them as “Pumpkin pie you can hold in your hand.”

The Lounge: Pootie Help Requested

I could really use any input you can offer Mooz.

This is our sweet girl Sadie…

Photobucket

She is 81/2, a beautiful smokey pootie who has always been so well mannered.  A little over a month ago she began to pee outside her litter box.  Not all the time but always in the same place.  At the time she had some vomiting but no more than what seemed normal for a cat.  However after she pooped outside the box, this was all in the course of a week, I took her to the vet.

Nurse Kelley Sez: racheltracks needs our prayers and energy

Originally posted on Daily Kos and cross-posted here for those of you who would otherwise miss it:

I just received a kosmail from the oldest daughter of beloved Kossack racheltracks, asking me to inform her friends and admirers here that she is on life support. Please go to the linked profile page and, if you are an editor or admin of any of the groups listed, republish this to your group.

Whoever or whatever you believe in, please send your prayers, good intentions, and/or healing energy to this wonderful lady.

Here’s what we know so far:

Hi Nurse Kelley.

This is Rachel’s oldest daughter, [name redacted]. I need to ask a huge favor of you. My mom is in ICU on a ventilator fighting for her life. I can’t cope with things right now so I was wondering if you would ask people in the groups that you know she’s in to please send as many prayers to heaven as they can. I am too upset to go into a lot of detail but my mom had knee replacement surgery on Dec. 19th. Ten days later she was back on the table due to a suspected blood clot or possible infection. No infection shows up and no blood clot either. Three days later she is back home with me and the swelling, pain, redness and heat are getting worse by the day. Last night we go back to the ER because her whole body was blowing up. She gained 30 pounds in 21 days and she was not even eating much at all. I had to come home to my kids last night so her best friend came up there to stay with her. They both told the nurse that it was way past time for her night time dose of heart medicine. The nurse never brought it to her. As the night progressed her lungs and heart sack started filling with fluid and she could no longer breath on her own. Her BP spiked and her chest started hurting. At that point they put her on life support. I know that my mom has made many friends here that she cares for very deeply. That is why I am asking for your help. I am so emotional right now that I can’t remember her password and I don’t know which groups she belongs to. Anything you could do would be deeply appreciated. If you need to reach me my number is XXX-XXX-XXXX. Thank you and God bless,

Rachel, if by some chance you get to see this – or someone reads it to you – please know that I love you. The candles are lit, I’m sending all the healing energy I have from Pikes Peak, and I beg you to fight. Live, Sweetie, live!

The Lounge: Fiercing the Moose

Confession time. When I first became a Motley Mooser, I thought that moose were no more than odd-looking beasts with excessively long legs. Now, I am absolutely in love with their bodies and their nature.
