Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Do we really want the birthers to go away?

So now that Obama has finally released his long form birth certificate, after a suspicious delay that might have fooled those 9 doddering black-robed ivy-league intellectual elitists on the Supreme Court but certainly couldn’t pull the wool over the eyes of salt-of-the-earth, heartland-loving, small-town-fantasizing ordinary Americans, the patriots are satisfied.  Right?

The ticker on FOX reads “White House releases what it says is Obama’s long form birth certificate.”  Orly Taitz has now turned to investigating whether the President is using a phony social security number.  Donald Trump is reserving judgment.

But…isn’t that a good thing?  Basically, there are two ways to read this politically.  The first is that the birther obsession helps paint the GOP as loonies.  The second is that the republicans have gone so far around the bend on the issues that we don’t want anything getting in the way of discrediting their extremist, dogmatic, fantasy-driven ideology and its policy expressions.  The second option clearly appears more idealistic.  It holds out hope that Dems can and will use GOP zaniness to finally articulate preferable policies and use them to pull the center back from its current infection with positions that would have had Goldwater (certainly Eisenhower) blogging on dkos.   Given the past few decades, however, we might want to encourage those mud-blood haters and xenophobes.  After all, how can we trust a President whose father and stepfather were muggles…I mean foreigners with funny skin and eyes?

Why don’t you like our president Mr. Smith?

Is it his big ears? The confidence in his gait?

Maybe you don’t like tall people. Does his being articulate make you uncomftrable?

You just don’t like lawyers or proffssors?

    I can’t wait for plan B.

  2. Having let them get more extreme (something like 30 percent of Republicans are birtherists) Obama is carefully letting the right position itself out on the crazy fringes, and the news focus on their internecine squabbles about that craziness.

This feels like a card that has been held in the hand for a long time.

  3. jsfox

was a master stroke. It pushes the birthers further out into the fringe, if that was possible. All of sudden Trump look like some kind of hero to the right, because he and only he could get Obama to do this. (As he is now claiming.) Thus moving him, I hope, further up in the early polls. FYI Trump just got played and his ego and stupidity will not allow him to see it.

I think it only drives the wedge deeper within the Republican Party. Couldn’t happen to  a better group.

  4. DTOzone

He started the conference by calling out NBC’s Chuck Todd directly.

“I can’t get the networks to break in on all kinds of other discussions,” he said. “I was just back there listening to Chuck-he was saying, it’s amazing that he’s not going to be talking about national security. I would not have the networks breaking in if I was talking about that, Chuck, and you know it.”

He then said that part of the reason that he wanted to release the birth certificate was because he was seeing coverage of the issue dominate the media, rather than discussion of the federal budget or other issues.

  5. HappyinVT

But given that folks have already found ways to discount it and/or to now have other questions I guess the issue won’t go away and he gets to look like the bigger person.

  6. HappyinVT

What took so long, huh?  Maybe they had to travel back to HI.  This conspiracy thing ain’t so tough.

    I don’t think it’s funny.

    I am not laughing.

I think the White House having to produce President Obama’s long form birth certificate to placate racists and idiots is deplorable.

It just goes to show to be black you have to be prepared to go the extra mile…or two.

This country isn’t post-racial by a long shot…and anyone who believes otherwise is an idiot.

from Balloon Juice sums up how I feel.  I’m glad he got a few jabs at the media in there but the whole thing is pathetic and disheartening.

    Best quote:

    2) Language alert. This alone disproves Donald Trump’s crock-of-shit* insulting and preposterous assertions that Obama was an affirmative action or charity admittee to the Ivy Leagues who couldn’t really cut it on his own IQ or test scores, as if there weren’t already evidence enough: It is his use at time 0:50 of the word “bemusement” in its proper sense (puzzlement, confusion) rather than what most people think it means (mild amusement). I would like to have someone ask Trump what he thinks the word means. Maybe some variant on “easement”? [* Update: OK, it’s a sign of defeat to resort to profanity. That’s a sign of how I felt about this line of slurs. First, whatever is wrong with Obama, no sane person thinks he’s stupid. Second, I wonder how many people think Donald Trump is in a position to judge Obama’s smarts. Third, there is no avoiding the racist connotation of saying that a successful black person got there — wink wink — through special treatment. “Of course the black guy ended up as editor of the Law Review. That’s how it is these days.” So I should just have said that rather than “crock of shit.”]

  9. really i do.

the US is in serious trouble. the economy, housing crisis, corporate corruption, its world-standing, diplomacy, etc and the press and other are concerned with a fucking birth certificate?!?!

seriously – perhaps a secessionist movement is needed.

He’s a dolt, an arrogant dolt, who was born on third base and brags about hitting a triple.

He is a sexist pig and for the life of me, I cannot understand ANY woman wanting to be with him.  There is not enough money in the world to make me want to spend three seconds with that slimeball.

Is it good?  IMO, it’s sad….sick and sad that in 2011 we are STILL stuck with the media giving airtime to bigots.

  11. Strummerson

…he’s was genetically engineered in a lab at Harvard by liberal atheist scientists.

The sad thing is that we woke up with a foreigner as a president and by the time we go to sleep we find out he’s a forger as well.

    It’s really all too easy.

I really believe that more birtherism and more Trump will help us.

has a cartoon – but also an interesting comment beneath it:

    http://www.courant.com/news/op

That President Barack Hussein Obama, what a tease! He strings the lunatics along toying with them for two-and-a-half years, and then just when they’re whipped into a frenzy, he releases his birth certificate. LOL! I was going to draw the Donald (the “carnival barker” Obama called him) in this cartoon, but decided that it’s hard to tell what Trump truly believes. He’ll do and say anything to get attention. He’s gotten enough on this issue, and he’ll get no more from me, but I’ll draw him again in the future if he warrants it. Love that thin straw hair and pucker-mouth.

I’m sure that this whole sorry episode was the Obama Administration’s way of having fun with the racists and nut cases. When this birther thing started, I’m sure a wise ass like Rahm Emanuel suggested they string along the fruitcakes just see how far they could take it. The Obamanistas probably finally got bored with the whole thing and decided to release the document. I’m just guessing because that’s what I would do.

This period in political history will go down as some of the most bizarre ever. I’m astounded daily by how irrelevant the conservatives are becoming and the excesses the welcoming Republican Party allows in their name. Who’s coming in next from the right wing fringe? Oh, right. Ron Paul.

  13. HappyinVT

lengthy blog post about how Obama told an “untruth” during the dressing-down.

The president said he was prompted to act “two weeks ago, when the Republican House had put forward a budget that will have huge consequences potentially to the country, and when I gave a speech about my budget and how I felt that we needed to invest in education and infrastructure and making sure that we had a strong safety net for our seniors even as we were closing the deficit, during that entire week the dominant news story wasn’t about these huge, monumental choices that we’re going to have to make as a nation. It was about my birth certificate. And that was true on most of the news outlets that were represented here.”

    But the president was wrong.

    From the Daily Caller:

THE EMBOSSED NOTARY SEAL IS NOT ON THE DOCUMENT.

It would not be accepted by any agency of the government that is presenting it absent that seal.

    NO EMBOSSED SEAL=NO LEGAL DOCUMENT

Obama did not spend 2 million dollars hiding this document. In addition the ink stamp at the bottom, where the embossed seal should also be, tells us it could be an abstract. The usual language for a copy of a long form does not include that language. Someone obtaining their certificate from Hawaii just months ago, and posted before this joke was posted, has a visible embossed seal, and the language of a real and true copy.

The arrogance of Obama to post this and the willful ignorance of the media over this con is stunning. I heard wendall goler on fox tell us the document is embossed! Really? Where?

    Read more: http://dailycaller.com/2011/04

See.  No embossed seal.  Proves he’s not white.  Maybe he’s a cylon.

Any chance we get a quote from Paul Ryan?

  15. Yep, the nutbars are cranking it up to 11. :~)

    From FOXNews.com comments:

Okay I have a few questions.

On the “newest” Birth Certificate released, the place of birth is listed as Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children”. But in 1961 it was the “Kauikeolani Children’s Hospital”. In 1978, it merged with Kapi’olani Maternity Home to become Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children. Why is this error there?

Why did Obama release the computer generated certificate of live birth 2 years ago and swore it was the only one he had and not this one? If that was so, how did he come by this one?

Why did Obama release this LF BC after Trump sent investigators to Hawaii?

Why couldn’t Governor Neil Ambercrombi not find this long form BC a long time ago?

Why did Tim Adams sign a sworn affidavit under penalty of perjury, that the long form BC of Obama did not exist?

Why did the Hawaii Department of Health announce yesterday that it would no longer release any long form BC to anyone (including the presidents)? Then they released this one today?

Why is the word “African” listed for race? It should have been “Bla ck”, “Neg ro”, or “Neg roid” back in the 1960’s.

Why is Obama’s father listed as a Kenyan student and not an American citizen? Obama said himself that natural born citizen means both parents must be citizens. See Senate resolution 511.

Why did Kapi’olani hospital up until today refuse to officially acknowledge that BO was born in their hospital?

Why did BO’s paternal grandmother and step sister insist that BO was born in Kenya? And they were present at his birth?

Why did the Kenyan President claim BO was born in Kenya?

Why is BO using a social security number reserved for residents of Connecticut?

  16. fogiv

So you ‘had it all along’ and let Lt. Col. Terry Lakin go to jail?

And is this latest piece of crap the best you can do, barky?    Your latest forgery still is not an official document because it does not have a seal on it.

No questions regarding Obama’s eligibility for the Presidency have been answered by this latest release of another forged document.  The arrogant prickly pear thinks he’s fooled America again.

It was only a matter of time before Obama paid for another forged birth certificate.  Obviously the obots, the media, and the intellectually dishonest are having a happy time with this, although none of them will say it is a valid long-form certificate.  A forgery is a forgery is a forgery.  He still won’t have it forensically analyzed so the plan is to have people noodle around for months on this latest forged birth certificate.

No doubt this is an effort to have us discuss and dispute Jerome Corsi’s book so it has minimal impact on Obama’s re-election plans, and to once again focus on the birth certificate rather than obama’s fundamental fatal flaw: he was born a brit and will forever be a brit.

It was more big fundraising for President Obama Wednesday. Mr. Obama wrapped up his day with no less than three evening fundraisers in New York City …  President Obama spoke of his birth certificate release, telling supporters “part of what happened this morning was me trying to remind the press and trying to remind both parties that what we do in politics is not a reality show. It’s serious.”

He may have gotten President Obama’s attention, but Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy is presumed by most people to be a stunt designed to goose ratings for his television show, “Celebrity Apprentice” on NBC. But while Trump has gotten plenty of airtime by suggesting, wrongly, that the president was not born in the United States, Nielsen rating for “Celebrity Apprentice” are lower than they were a year ago — and dropping fast. One reason Trump’s audience is abandoning him may be that, according to demographic research of primetime television viewers provided exclusively to The Atlantic by National Media Inc., a firm that places political ads on television, the audience for “Celebrity Apprentice” is among the most liberal in primetime television (see graphic above). Rather than add viewers, Trump foolishly appears to be driving them away. http://www.theatlantic.com/pol…

Very interesting chart and graph at the link.

was embarrassing. I am so disgusted in this country today. We really don’t deserve to be a superpower.

  23. spacemanspiff

Very scary that all this is even discussed. The MSM has done a horrible job and put Obama’s life in danger by giving this crap legs. So although I understand where you are coming from politically speaking (as in winning elections) I really want this all to calm down. We all know what I’m talking about and it scares me to even talk about this in such vague terms. I just want all this to good away.

  24. …on Barack Obama senior’s files from Harvard

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/worl

Which then referred to a great Andrew Rice analysis

    http://www.capitalnewyork.com/

What I think the documents reveal, though, is a subtle, institutionalized conspiracy that in a way seems more insidious than overt cross-burning racism, because almost surely none of its participants thought of their actions as discriminatory at all. In that sense, the file is an instructive artifact, not just of our president’s biography, but of our nation’s history of conflicted attitudes about race, foreign cultures, intermarriage and sex.

Hard as it may be to believe today, it seems clear from a close reading of the the file that the president’s father was driven from this country because of his messy personal life. And reading between the lines, it’s not hard to see a subtext of miscegenation.

As you probably know, there are quite a few mixed race couples in my immediate circle. The only trouble my older brother John and his Kenyan wife Alice have ever had, despite travelling throughout Asia and Africa, has been in the US.

They’ve vowed never to go to the South again, after a horrible time in Nashville and Memphis (mainly from white guys) even though my brother is a huge blues fan.

And in New York, Alice got stopped by a black woman who said “What are you doing with the white man?”

    “Show me your papers!”

Major Blackard, then just 19 years old, dug into his trousers in search of his wallet. He padded his jacket, but could not find his billfold.

“Sir, I done left my wallet…” Blackard said. Before he could finish his sentence, the young man was posted against the brick wall, cuffed and taken to the St. Louis city jail. Unable to prove his identity, he would spend the next 21 days in a cramped, musty cell. That’s where his older brother Matt found him, beaten and bloodied. Matt returned with Major’s employer later that day, wallet and identification card in hand, to post bond.

The year was 1899. Major Blackard was my great, great grandfather.

    snip

This morning, as White House staffers released copies of the president’s long form birth certificate, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something very ugly was going on. For the first time in recorded history, a sitting president of the United States found it necessary to produce his original birth certificate for public inspection. Not once, in 235 years, have we ever demanded proof that our president was born on American soil.

In a stunning display of unchecked ego, Donald Trump quickly hosted a news conference, during which he took credit for forcing President Obama’s hand. The sometime real estate developer, socialite, author and television personality went on to caution onlookers to let “experts” examine the document. Lest the president continue perpetrating was Trump has called potentially the “biggest fraud in American history.” http://www.thegrio.com/politic…

    Harsh, early lessons for Republicans:

President Obama capitulated Wednesday to the freak show, using the White House podium to address a specious rumor championed by a reality television star, sternly warning the nation can’t be distracted by “carnival barkers.”

And in engaging on an issue that the administration had long viewed as beneath public discussion, Obama makes a bet that he can take the reins as the ringmaster in a political circus that could present long-term political perils for Republicans and convince the American public that he’s the responsible adult in a political arena increasingly filled by sideshow attractions.

Ben Smith – President Obama takes on the birther political circus Politico 27 Apr 11

Heh.  That’s mainstream Republican spin talking.  First round to Obama and looks like everybody wants to clear the freaks out of the room; and soon.

  28. HappyinVT

Since the election of Barack Obama, the Republican Party has proved that one of its central intellectual arguments was right all along. It has long claimed that evolution is a myth believed in only by whiny liberals – and it turns out it was on to something. Every six months, the party venerates a new hero, and each time it is somebody further back on the evolutionary scale.

    snip

Enter stage (far) right Donald Trump, the bewigged billionaire who has filled America with phallic symbols and plastered his name across more surfaces than the average Central Asian dictator. CNN’s polling suggests he is the most popular candidate among Republican voters. It’s not hard to see why. Trump is every trend in Republican politics over the past 35 years taken to its logical conclusion. He is the Republican id, finally entirely unleashed from all restraint and all reality.

snip (a multi-paragraph smackdown of Trump and the current Republican Party)

Trump probably won’t become the Republican nominee, but not because most Republicans reject his premisses. No: it will be because he states these arguments too crudely for mass public consumption. He takes the whispered dogmas of the Reagan, Bush and Tea Party years and shrieks them through a megaphone. The nominee will share similar ideas, but express them more subtly. In case you think these ideas are marginal to the party, remember – it has united behind the budget plan of Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan. It’s simple: it halves taxes on the richest 1 percent and ends all taxes on corporate income, dividends, and inheritance. It pays for it by slashing spending on food stamps, healthcare for the poor and the elderly, and basic services. It aims to return the US to the spending levels of the 1920s – and while Ryan frames it as a response to the deficit, it would actually increase it according to the independent Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. Ryan says “the reason I got involved in public service” was because he read the writings of Ayn Rand, which describe the poor as “parasites” who must “perish”, and are best summarized by the title of one of her books: ‘The Virtue of Selfishness.’
