Talks to end the war in Afghanistan involve extensive, face-to-face discussions with Taliban commanders from the highest levels of the group’s leadership, who are secretly leaving their sanctuaries in Pakistan with the help of NATO troops, officials here say.

The discussions, some of which have taken place in Kabul, are unfolding between the inner circle of President Hamid Karzai and members of the Quetta shura, the leadership group that oversees the Taliban war effort inside Afghanistan. Afghan leaders have also held discussions with leaders of the Haqqani network, considered to be one of the most hard-line guerrilla factions fighting here; and members of the Peshawar shura, whose fighters are based in eastern Afghanistan.

Awesome.

I can always hope.

How about that Obama fella?

During Obama’s appearance on Mythbusters, Glenn Beck will debut his new Fox News show, Mythspreaders.

Why would you pay to see Jackass when you can watch Glenn Beck for free?

For Halloween, Christine O’Donnell is going as a qualified candidate.

NEWS FROM SCIENCE: Pediatricians say babbling is key to infant development; also, to an anchoring job on Fox.

People like this dude, Daily Show and Colbert, Wonkette keep me sane with the laughs.

gets conflated with al Qaeda when they are not the same thing.  And, while I initially supported the president’s decision to refocus our efforts there, at some point continuing to kill civilians while hunting what is really a very small number of people who may or may not actually be in the country is bound to piss the natives off and just continue the cycle.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the country will likely return to pre-war conditions once (if?) we leave.

KABUL (Reuters) – Afghanistan’s new peace council said on Thursday it would be willing to make concessions to bring insurgents to the negotiating table, and called for Saudi Arabia’s help in mediating peace talks.

Qiyamuddin Kashaf, the spokesman for the High Peace Council, also appealed to all Muslim nations for help brokering an end to a war now in its 10th year, and repeated Kabul and Washington’s longstanding demand that militants renounce violence.

Inducements to tempt fighters back into the government fold could include jobs, homes and cash, Kashaf told a news conference in the Afghan capital.

NATO and Afghan officials have confirmed preliminary contacts between Karzai’s government and the Taliban. NATO’s top civilian representative in Afghanistan said on Thursday the Kabul government had opened channels with some “significant Taliban leaders.”

“We are really just at the stage where channels of communication are beginning to open between the Afghan government and some significant Taliban leaders and we don’t really know whether they are just leading particular factions or whether they speak for wider groups,” Mark Sedwill, speaking from Kabul, told Britain’s Sky News.

    But…

The Taliban issued a statement on Thursday describing the reported talks as “mind-boggling lies” and “organized enemy propaganda.”

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan refutes outright these false claims, neither has it sent any delegations for talks and neither does it intend to negotiate at a time when the country is under occupation,” the Taliban statement said.

The Taliban have always pushed for the withdrawal of the nearly 150,000 foreign forces now in Afghanistan as their main condition for holding talks with Karzai’s government.
