PA-Sen Anybody's race

It’s pretty inexcusable for my first diary to be  a short one but I thought it was an important addition to the Specter conversation we’ve been having around here.

What one would expect to be an open and shut race between Specter and Toomey just got a lot more interesting.

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge is considering running for the Republican Senate nomination in his home state, according to a senior Republican aide with knowledge of the situation.

National and Keystone State Republicans have been publicly and privately urging Ridge to consider a Senate bid since Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) announced earlier this week that he was switching parties and would run for re-election as a Democrat in 2010.

Barack Obama Nominates Valerie Jarrett To Supreme Court

Nah, I’m just playin’. That’d be crazy, though, wouldn’t it? Obama would have to be PRETTY stupid to do something like that.

Let’s all take a minute and be grateful that, no matter who Obama picks, he’s already done a much better job than his predecessor.

That being said, what are your thoughts on this matter? Consider this an open thread.

Hey Republicans… Are You Really That &#@?!#% Stupid?

According to Politico, Republicans are already planning on how they can try to derail Obama’s picks for the Supreme Court.

Senate Republicans admit they have virtually no shot at stopping President Barack Obama’s pick to replace Supreme Court Justice David Souter – but they see a definite political upside in waging a fight.

With apologies to Seth Meyers, I just have to ask… REALLY?!

Condoleeza Rice: Because Bush Authorized It, Torture Wasn't Illegal

I think this is pretty much the purest distillation of what the GOP’s primary defense will be against claims that members of the Bush administration are guilty of war crimes for authorizing torture.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was recently speaking at Stanford University when a student asked her a question on waterboarding and torture.  Here’s her response:

The president instructed us that nothing we would do would be outside of our legal obligations under the Convention Against Torture…

The United States was told, we were told, nothing that violates our obligations under the Convention Against Torture, and so by definition, if it was authorized by the president, it did not violate our obligations under the Convention Against Torture.

Hear that everyone?  Because the President authorized torture means that whatever the United States did pursuant to that authorization wasn’t illegal.

Sound familiar?

“When the President does it, that means it is not illegal.” — Richard Nixon
