There may be a reason John McCain has been hesitant to attach his name or voice to the Obama/Ayers relationship. Mr. McCain dips his foot into the pool a little deeper each day, almost as if he is “testing” the water. Is he more worried about the reaction from potential voters or is he concerned about the effective counter-punch he may receive from the Obama campaign?
My guess is the latter.
Follow me over the jump…
For the past two weeks it’s no secret the McCain campaign’s modus operandi has been linking Barack Obama to Bill Ayers thus implying that Senator Obama is terrorist sympathizer and attacking his Americanness.
At first McCain steered clear of directly attacking Obama with this charge, instead relying on surrogates and the “All-Bull” with Lipstick, Sarah Palin. (Have to use her for something).
Then after the second debate Biden and Obama accused McCain for not being man enough to “say it to Barack’s face”. This is where I think they lured McCain in, they were questioning the “maverick’s” toughness. No way would the former fighter pilot back down from a challenge to his manhood, and sure enough he brought it up.
Barack did a good job of explaining the relationship and actually made McCain look weak when he cried about the John Lewis and how “unfair” it was. But I think this portion was just the jab of Obama’s counter attack.
Obama is “rope-a-doping” McCain…
McCain thinks he got away relatively unscathed in the debate in regards to Ayers. He is beginning to feel more and more comfortable bringing up the domestic terrorist angle, with no backlash deterring him. Obama is feeding him the rope and then BANG!
G. Gordon Liddy.
You see G. Gordon Liddy is a domestic terrorist, felon and a close friend of John S. McCain. Liddy has donated annually to all of McCain’s campaigns and even held a fundraiser for McCain at, get this, his home in 1998.
Now most of you associate Liddy with “Watergate” and the Nixon administaration in which he was found guilty of breaking into the DNC and was sentenced to 20 years, serving 5 and a half before being pardoned by Jimmy Carter.
But Mr. Liddy had other plans as well. For those of you who do not know the whole history of G. Gordon Liddy the following excerpt sums it up quite nicely:
During the same period that Bill Ayers was a member of the Weather Underground, Gordon Liddy was making plans to firebomb a Washington think tank, assassinate a prominent journalist, undertake the Watergate burglary, break into the office of Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist, and kidnap anti-war protesters at the 1972 Republican convention.
Also, in 1994, on his syndicated radio talk show, Liddy gave advise to listners on how to shoot Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms agents.
“Well, if the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you and they are bearing arms, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot; they’re going to be wearing bulletproof vests.”
It’s important to note the Mr. Liddy has been publicly unrepentant for his actions.
As recently as 2007 John McCain had nothing but praise for this domestic terrorist and felon. Here is an exchange between McCain and Liddy on Liddy’s talk show in May of 2007.
LIDDY: Your experience in the Hanoi Hilton is remarkable. I mean, I put in five years in a prison [for masterminding the Watergate burglary, and associated crimes], but it was here in the United States, and they didn’t torture – the only torture that I had was being forced to listen to rap music from time to time.
McCAIN: Well, you know, I’m proud of you. I’m proud of your family. I’m proud to know your son, Tom, who’s a great and wonderful guy. And it’s always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon. And congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.
Liddy’s “principles and philosphies that make this country great”? What principle’s John? Planning to murder or kidnapping an opponent? What philosophies John? How to kill a Federal Agent?
This is the right hook that Obama is patiently waiting to land. Many on the blogosphere have already picked this association up, but it wasn’t getting legs in the MSM. I believe that changed tonight on The Late Show with David Letterman.
DL: But did you not have a relationship with Gordon Liddy?
JM: I met him, you know, I mean…
DL: Didn’t you attend a fund raiser at his house?
JM: Gordon Liddy’s?
JM: I know Gordon Liddy. He paid his debt. He went to prison, he paid his debt, as people do. I’m not in any way embarrassed to know Gordon Liddy. And his son, who is also a good friend and supporter of mine.
DL: But you understand that the same case could be made of your relationship with him as being made with William Ayers.
JM: Everything about any relationship that I’ve had I will make completely open and give a complete accounting of. Senator Obama said that he was a guy who lived in the neighborhood. OK, it was more than that.
DL: They served on a committee at one point.
I think this may get legs.
