Events are moving so fast this is already out of date: first the resignation of resignation of Rebecca Brooks as head of News International. For a small personal vignette of my encounter here, you can read the whole thing here.

But it’s the US where Newscorp is based, and both Rupert and James are US citizens, and this is where the scandal will finally engulf him I believe. As Carl Bernstein said earlier this week, making the explicit comparison with Watergate these revelation “are the beginning, not the end, of the seismic event.”  He also stresses how important this US is to Murdoch

Murdoch associates, present and former-and his biographers-have said that one of his greatest long-term ambitions has been to replicate that political and cultural power in the United States. For a long time his vehicle was the New York Post-not profitable, but useful for increasing his eminence and working a wholesale change not only in American journalism but in the broader culture as well.., Then came the unfair and imbalanced politicized “news” of the Fox News Channel-showing (again) Murdoch’s genius at building an empire on the basis of an ever-descending lowest journalistic denominator…. And finally, in 2007 The Wall Street Journal‘s squabbling family owners succumbed to his acumen, willpower, and money, fulfilling Murdoch’s dream of owning an American newspaper to match the influence and prestige of his U.K. holding, The Times of London-one that really mattered, at the topmost tier of journalism.

Between the Post, Fox News, and the Journal, it’s hard to think of any other individual who has had a greater impact on American political and media culture in the past half century.

If we live in an information economy, then Newscorp is the Standard Oil of the 21st Century. Murdoch built up both horizontal and vertical monopoly power in the UK and Australia, leading to vast inefficiencies, corruption and unaccountable political power.

That was his aim in the US also: so it’s crucial to strike at the pillars of his power while they are beginning to crumble.

Now Rebekah Wade has gone (she “fucked the company” according to Elizabeth Murdoch), and her predecessor at News International, Les Hinton, has resigned as CEO of the Dow Jones (‘Les is no more’ as someone brilliantly put it)….

…the firewalls between the public outrage and the Murdoch family itself have fallen:

Yes, it’s working. The storm of outrage is crossing the Atlantic to Newscorp’s US base. As we’ve learned, the FBI have now launched an investigation into allegations of phone hacking by the Murdoch Empire thanks to the instigation of Pete King as I diaried yesterday. This is leading The Guardian and is featured heavily both on the the BBC, The New York Times and CNN.

Even Rupert himself is showing signs of flagging. He’s just released a rather dispirited, desultory but defiant interview in his own Wall Street Journal in which the main message really seems to be:

I’m tired.

Though many of you have been sceptical that the US public or MSM would pay attention to this, it seems some of the massive public revulsion here in the UK is beginning to transfer to Murdoch’s adopted homeland and commercial base – the United States.

But there’s more to this than just law-breaking: there’s Murdoch’s nefarious role in law-making.  

There’s a reason Jon Stewart is the most trusted name in news. It’s not just because he rips on Republicans on a regular basis; rather, it’s because he points out failings and inconsistencies in both parties and amongst people all along the political spectrum. While I was disappointed that he didn’t stick it properly to John Yoo a couple of nights ago, he has done some stellar interviews that should make any halfway objective pundit or broadcaster proud. But despite his willingness to take down hypocrites and liars in both parties, it does often seem that his scathing satire more frequently targets Republicans — but not without reason.

As surely as facts have a liberal bias, hypocrisy has a conservative one. Let me be clear: This is not to say that Democrats (and truly, politicians in general) cannot be hypocrites. But when it comes to flagrant, vile, in-your-face, hysterical, mind-boggling hypocrisy, the Grand Old Party takes the cake. You know, the kind of hypocrisy that makes your head ache and pound near to the point of imminent explosion and your blood pressure skyrocket so quickly you get dizzy spells that rival those brought on by a strong, expensive dose of…  

I have probably watched more Fox “News” than any regular here on The Moose. In fact, I’d wager I have watched more of it than most rank and file Republicans, since I’m much more of a news junky than your average Joe. Growing up in a conservative household, it was pretty hard to escape it. (I have probably listened to more Rush than the rest of you, too, for that matter.) I have always enjoyed my parents — despite their unfortunate political leanings, they are smart, funny, cool people in most respects — and since they watched Fixed News in the den, I spent a lot of time viewing it as well, simply because it was a way of spending time with them and discussing the day’s events.

I just couldn’t pass this up — the clip is too good to miss. This afternoon, in a segment headed, “YOUR FACTS ARE WRONG…AGAIN,” CNN’s Rick Sanchez tore Fixed News a new asshole, and it was a thing of beauty. It appears that Fox thought it would be a good idea to take out a full page color ad in the Washington Post, alleging that the other major media outlets (including CNN) failed to cover the (embarrassing, hysterical) 9/12 Tea Party protest in DC:

Welcome to Tax Day, ladies and gentleman!

I hope everyone’s gotten their taxes finished. My identity was recently stolen (why on earth would anybody wanna be me?), so there are a few extra hoops for me to leap through this year. But that’s nothing compared to the trials and tribulations suffered by your average taxpayer under the Obama administration. With injustices raining down upon the American public from every angle, the boldest amongst us are taking to the streets. Today, all around the country, thanks to the organizational efforts of the ever fair, ever balanced folks at Fox News Channel, whiny Republicans who can’t get over having their asses handed to them last November oppressed citizens will be coming together at “FNC Tax Day Tea Parties” to protest President Obama’s outrageous fiscal policies.

From The Raw Story this morning comes this gem:

As if Americans needed any more reminders of how closely aligned with the Republican party the Fox News network is, New Year’s Eve brings us this new tidbit.

During it’s broadcast from New York City, the network encouraged viewers to send in text messages which, if approved by moderators, would scroll across the Fox ticker at the bottom of the screen.

Moderators, however, let this one slip: “HAPPY NEW YEAR AND LET’S HOPE THE MAGIC NEGRO DOES A GOOD JOB. LOVE JEN AND JOHN C.”

I realize that it was a viewer comment that “slipped by” a moderator, but still… c’mon, guys. Way to perpetuate your own stereotype!
