Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

To win in 2010, ignore the national polls.

I keep seeing on TV and the internet that the polls say things don’t look good for Democrats in November.  That’s just sad and it’s totally unacceptable.

Here’s what I think is the best way to win, in spite of the polls:

Bust your butt helping to Get Out the Vote in your community.  No one of us can affect what’s happening someplace else so we have to concentrate on what we can accomplish.

I can carve out a piece of my neighborhood and make sure as many Democrats get their ballots in as possible.  My friends (none are immune from my badgering) can do that in their neighborhoods.  If enough of us do that then the Dem candidates take our town, and our county and we exceed expectations for votes at the state level from our county.

If every one of us does that in our own neighborhoods, towns, counties and states, when we poke our heads up on November 1, things will be looking pretty good for the Dems.

For those who haven’t been active in the party before, get connected to your local DNC chapter.  The state party knows as we get close to election day who hasn’t voted yet.  They’ll send it to the local chapter regularly.  On election day, they will send out the “not voted yet” list every hour or two.  In November 2008, we would keep contacting people until they dropped off the list.

There are more of us than there are of them.  If we all voted every election, we would always win.

The Public Option

The Republicans always seem to beat the Democrats when it comes to framing a message.  The health insurance reform “public option” is the latest victim of unfavorable framing.

According to the rightwing, the public option is government run healthcare.  The Democrats have been trying to explain that it isn’t but the issue has become so muddled nobody really understands it.

I don’t understand why we don’t just call it government insured healthcare.  When someone gets sick, the government insures that the caregivers get paid even though the patient doesn’t have the cash and hasn’t paid in enough to cover the expense.  Seems pretty simple to me.

I would compare it to government insured bank accounts.  If a bank goes belly up, the government insures that the depositors get their money back.  Nobody seems to have a problem with that.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell No!

All right warriors we’ve got two weeks to get a healthcare reform bill including a robust public option passed.  The enemy, Republicans and Blue Dogs, is marshalling its forces at this very moment to try to defeat us.

We can all spare some time to make a few phone calls to our Senators and Congresspeople, write them a snail mail letter or a fax, send a letter to our local newspaper.

YES, WE CAN.

We are the people who only last year mobilized and sent a little known junior Senator from Illinois to the White House to become the first African American President.  If we could do that, we can do this too.

YES, WE CAN.

This is our window of opportunity to get something done that is long overdue.  Our President needs our help.  Please, get involved.

That’s all I have to say.
