Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

A Trust-Based Economy

Met a couple of interesting folks here in the Budweiser Brewhouse in Atlanta Hartsfield airport.  Alex Orr and friend work in the film industry in Los Angeles.  Alex has produced a movie called Bloodcar which was pirated a week before release, and he couldn’t be happier.

Clinton, Gates Named to Obama’s Cabinet

Well, it’s official.  According to the Washington Post, Barack Obama has named Hillary Clinton and Robert Gates to the roles of Secretary of State and Defense, respectively.

There are people on the left and right unhappy about either or both of these picks, which makes me very pleased.

Traitorous Bastards

Al-Qaeda’s #2, Ayman Zawahiri, released a video today blasting President Elect Obama and calling him “dishonorable” and refering to him with racial epithets.

Wait, I thought they would be dancing in the streets? (a sincere Fuck You, you miserable traitorous bastard, Congressman King – ed).

Oh, and Rush Limbaugh – you sick anti-American slimeball – thanks for the mention that Obama looks like Ayman Zawahiri.

Wait, I thought that Al-Qaeda was praying for Obama win? (special trans-continental ‘piss-off’ to John Howard – ed)

[Update – 19/11/2008 4:30pm ET] – Ted Stevens Concedes election to Mark Begich.

Anchorage Daily News has this:

ANCHORAGE, AK – Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) today released the following statement regarding his campaign and the most recent vote tallies in Alaska:

“Given the number of ballots that remain to be counted, it is apparent the election has been decided and Mayor Begich has been elected.”

An Adult Treatment of a Difficult Issue

The television program “Boston Legal” tackled the issue of abortion and achieved a more balanced and nuanced discussion of this incredibly complex issue than any I have heard on the topic in quite some time.  It was the kind of complex presentation of the information on an issue that is necessary if we are going to make progress in considering the difficult and multifaceted issues that require our attention.

I would like to believe that the blogosphere can provide forums to treat issues as contentious as abortion with the thoughtfulness needed.

The World Turns Toward America

As the world turns favorable eyes on America again, there is one group that is upset.  Outcast.  Disowned, discouraged and disenfranchised.

Terrorists, Extremists and Despots.

We’ll just call them TED.  TED ain’t happy.

Why Organize?

The following is an article written by one Barack H. Obama.  A mostly unknown young man of twenty-seven years of age, Mr. Obama is a community organizer in Chicago.  The following is an interesting piece, and while Mr. Obama is a  relatively obscure individual, the tone and content I believe speaks to our own efforts at organization and activism to improve the lot of mankind in this world.

Keep an eye on this young man, he just might be something someday.

Gay Rights Working Thread

Hi folks,

This is not a statement diary.  I am not at this point claiming to have any bright ideas whatsoever, neither on the real roots of the problem or the shape any solutions might take.  Rather, I want to have some place to jot down some thoughts I have on the topic and gather other peoples’ thoughts as well.

The topic of discussion is:

“What are the components of the resistance to same-sex marriage in the United States?”

Only by getting deep into the soil of this issue do we stand a chance of understanding it and therefore killing it off entirely.  My concern is that the bulk of energy expended at addressing the issue will be based on indignation and emotion which – no matter how righteous – will be ineffective.  So, inasmuch as possible, I would like to engage with you all in an attempt to verbalize as many of the pieces and parts of the issue here, in as dispassionate a way as possible.

Let’s see if we can take this broken machine apart and start finding out how to fix it.
