National Endowment for the Arts Gets a Raise from The House… Now We Need The Senate!

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a $15 million increase for both the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for FY 2010, as my good friend Cecil Thompson just e-mailed me.

This is Great! The problems with the economy are hurting the performing arts spaces big time… from the Metropolitan Opera down to many of the smaller companies and performance groups in your own regions.

What? Is North Korea not getting enough press?

“If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and people of Korea will … wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all,” says the North Korean Central News Agency on reports that a US destroyer was following the Kang Nam, a N. Korean vessel transporting illicit weapons to Myanmar, against United Nations sanctions. Ironically, the ship following the Kang Nam is the USS John S. McCain.

It's time to let our reps know…

…both Senators and Congressmen and women, that the majority of us favor a public health plan and are opposed to the way insurance companies suck our money out of health care. If they don’t understand this, then they shouldn’t be reelected, neither Republicans nor Democrats.

If you haven’t contacted your representatives, or participated in the many polls and petitions on the web (like Dr.Howard Dean’s which I think is very important to support: http://www.standwithdrdean.com/LastChance), then it is time to get active. Let them know what you think.

I know that my Rep., Shelly Moore Capito (R), is a lost cause… and hopefully it will help get her replaced next election. That’s the one thing we can hold over their heads, the possibility of massive vote attacks.

Who really won in Iran?

While Iran has declared Ahmadinejad the Winner, these numbers have been leaked out of Iran showing how the votes really accumulated:

Leaked Numbers from Iran

Devastating! An 88-Year-Old Anti-Semite Attacks the Holocaust Museum.

I’ve spent the better part of the afternoon flipping the television channels to hear more report about this 88 year old monster who killed a guard in his attempt to kill even more people at the Holocaust Museum in D.C.

This was a guy that the authorities KNEW ABOUT. He ran a web site which attacked Jews, Blacks and Catholics. He self-published a book that he gave the first six chapters of away for free on line (then advertising the last six chapters for money).

Are we at the end of American-style Capitalism?

There’s a thought provoking article in the new Vanity Fair by Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel Prize winning economist, which evaluates what the current financial situation Joseph Stiglitzthroughout the world means to America’s position in it.

It is worth reading and thinking about, since it lays most of the responsibility on a “free-market economy” as foisted on the world by a greedy and thoughtless Wall Street, which set very different standards for other countries than it adopted for the U.S. This from the article:

Teddy Kennedy is putting up a new Healthcare Bill… Not Single Payer.

Before we get into this discussion, go toTruthout.org and get the background on Teddy’s Bill: http://www.truthout.org.

Now this is a real winner for the Insurance Companies that are already sucking the money out of the Healthcare system and making it more expensive for the majority of us. For one thing, EVERYONE would be required to buy insurance… and those who couldn’t afford it would get a government subsidy… your tax money in Insurance company pockets.

Is Norm Going to Pull Out?

Two or three sources are betting that Norm Coleman is going to discontinue his campaign to keep Al Franken from getting the Minnesota Senate seat if the State Supreme Court, as it is believed, comes in supporting Franken. Even though John Cornyn and the other Republican Committee types are saying they would support Coleman through the US Supreme Court, Coleman apparently thinks Governor Pawlenty will sign the certification if the State Supremes come in for Al.

The Economy and The American Dream.

Driving to work in Charles Town, WV, this morning I stopped to pick up coffee at the drive-thru window of the Ranson Chic-Fil-A on Route 9. I don’t usually get my coffee at Chic-Fil-A… but there was such traffic at their drive in window I thought it must be pretty good.

Well, it wasn’t any different than the coffee at McDonald’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, Sheetz, or the counter at Needful Things (which, as it turns out, is all that remains of an old F.W. Woolworth lunch counter).

Under The LobsterScope has a new URL address.

Due to a Googol Robot destroying Underthelobsterscope.blogspot.com, I’ve had to change the URL. I hope my friends at Motley Moose will change their blogrolls for my little site to “http://underthelobsterscope.wordpress.com”.
