    Heading for a high of 86. Humid but not unbearably so, making it a great day for a hike in the woods. I’m glad I took a day of vacation to do just that very thing.

    There’s a section of the Appalachian trail known as the rollercoaster (because up down up down up down up down at the rate of a peak every 2 miles). I am going to do an out and back hike there.

    puppy chewed my keyboard cord – all the way through (it wasn’t hooked up- I was cleaning it)

    Have to say I like this new mouse – don’t even need a mousepad for it.

    Had my puter cleaned too – it’s running better – free of cat hair and dust.

    It is 64 degrees here with an expected high of 84 degrees. Scattered thunderstorms in the forecast. Look at the next few days highs and lows: 84/69, 85/71, 84/71, 83/64. Consistent if nothing else.

    The news is very perplexing because the headlines scream “SCOTUS deals major blow to Obama” and “Crippling blow from SCOTUS to Obama’s presidency”. I am not sure if they are misreading the opinion from yesterday but it is not a blow and it is certainly not crippling. Here is what happened: Noel Canning successfully challenged the credentials of the members of the NLRB that ruled against him. His case will now go back to an NLRB with a different makeup but one where he is unlikely to have a different outcome. The other cases decided by the NLRB that included the disqualified members will either have to be reheard OR those firms will decide that they don’t want to spend the money to relitigate it and they will accept the original rulings. Again, they will be unlikely to have a different outcome. So the status quo remains except for a few deadenders who want to throw their money down the drain.

    The larger question of recess appointments is moot because Harry Reid changed the Senate rules to allow an up or down vote on the president’s nominees. We no longer need a 60 vote threshold, like we did when the president had to recess appoint to fill the NLRB or risk it shutting down, to fill critical openings. It is unlikely that a modern president would ever recess appoint a Supreme Court justice (the only exception to the filibuster) because of the political fallout. So he has his recess appointment power in place if he needs it … for a real recess, one of 10 days or more … and his nominees get their up or down votes.

    PLUS Antonin Scalia hated the decision which is a sign that it was good news for our side.

    Now the abortion perimeter was NOT good news for our side because it trivialized clinic violence and the fear that women feel trying to get a legal medical procedure. More on that later.

    All y’all who are on FB should be following my friend Jim Rigby. He is writing great stuff about the clinic ruling yesterday & about abortion in general, but this was the best thing he put up this morning:

    Feminism is not male bashing. It is actually quite loving to rescue a man from sexism; for the higher a man climbs on his culture’s artificially constructed ladder of patriarchy, the further he moves from his own true sense of value. A healthy human heart does not need another’s submission to feel it’s own power and worth.

    Good morning, iriti and fellow Moosylvanians! It’s 70 F. here on a delightful summer morning, going for a high of 85 F. Splash party scheduled for the afternoon–must try to make the downstairs presentable so my niece and great-nephew won’t faint from shock as they walk through to the patio.

    Back in the 1990s I was a clinic defender and also worked as an escort at the Commonwealth Clinic for Women. The last couple of years I did it I borrowed by husband’s bullet-proof vest, I was so worried about possible violence. It’s certainly happened in other places.

    I’m absolutely sick and outraged at far back the pendulum has swung for women’s rights. We can’t get a legal operation without being threatened and yelled at. They’ve even made it impossible for poor rural women to take RU-486 when prescribed by a doctor through closed-circuit television. As far as I know, it’s now illegal to transport a minor across a state line for abortion.

    You know what I think? I think we’re going to have to wake up “Jane,” the underground abortion network that operated in Chicago in the 1960s.

    I don’t know what to do or where to turn, I’m so outraged.

    I come from TX and don’t call anything below 90 hot 🙂  

    I’ve got so many things I’m pissed off about right now the SCOTUS decisions are just icing – and I don’t like icing.  I’m not quite as old as Denise and I haven’t had anything like her experiences but I’ve been on the edges doing a little bit here and there and to see all the progress we made, won inch by difficult and sometimes deadly inch, be eroded back by the same evil people is just maddening.  As is a bunch of crap at work as The Powers That Be spend tax and tuition dollars on privatized software programs that do nothing but add extra and unnecessary steps to the work we do – and then complain about how inefficient public workers are – that I am currently trying to deal with.  Gonna take a walk and cool off a bit and then do the new extra 3-step process to enter an honorarium that should have been done 3 weeks ago except nobody thought to copy me in on the agreement so I didn’t know about it.

    I truly hope everybody in Moosylvania has a better day than I’m having – and a good weekend.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

    Thanks everyone…..reading here this morning helps settle my SCOTUS induced anger. As I watched my grand kids play and ride their bikes yesterday I tried to stay in the moment with them and not let my worry about the world they are growing up in spoil the day. But it’s hard to feel optimistic a times. The graphic Rachael had on her show of the buffer zone around the Supreme Court building and the minuscule amount of protection being denied to women in Mass. was just very discouraging.

    I’ll have a quieter day today…the pool and Ryan this morning, then a movie with all three  kids this afternoon.
