    An absolutely gorgeous Memorial Dad predicted her. All weekend has been beautiful weather.

    Today is part 3 of our Battlefield Hike series: Manassas. At almost 12 miles it’s also the longest. When we’re done we’ll have covered almost 34 miles this long weekend.

    Hope your Memorial Day is lovely. Do take a moment to reflect on the sons & daughters lost in our nations wars. May the numbers stop growing soon.

    It is 69 degrees here in Madison with an expected high of 84. Storms tonight and into tomorrow will cool us down some but it will be in the 78 to 82 range the rest of the week. Goodbye, 3 days of spring, hello, summer heat. 🙁

    I will declare this Sunday-2 and do all the things that I should have done yesterday but which I decided to blow off.

    Part of me wants to write about the awful thing that crawled out from under a rock in the wake of the Santa Barbara mass murder. The other part is certain that there are no words that can make any sense of it. It is not difficult at all for a person to find places on the Internet to feed their paranoia and tell them that their problems are the fault of some Other. And misogyny is not new. But some of the rhetoric from the MRA and PUA movements reaches new levels, frightening in their anger … and maybe more frightening because the target is People Like Me. A white woman can feel outraged by the hateful rhetoric of white supremacists but they are not targeting People Like Me directly (indirectly, they do, because many of us care deeply about civil rights and realize that we all benefit from a just society). The worst part is that there is no “fix” other than to encourage non-misogynistic men to reject and marginalize the MRA much like progressives have rejected the rhetoric of the KKK and their ilk.

    I suppose the growth of the men’s “rights” movements and their violent rhetoric is the inevitable result of the pushback against the rape culture. It is all part of a new awareness in women about the attitudes that have become policy platforms in the Republican party: the war on women that seeks forced birth and which has at its roots rhetoric not much different from the people on anonymous message boards giving Elliot Rodger atta boys.

    It’s 67 here going up to 85. The forecast made me realize that summer is coming and how much I hate summer and the warm and hot weather that it brings along. Oh well, soon winter will be here.

    Will certainly follow iriti in remembering those lost in war and will think of their families, if still living, and their struggles. May there be peace on earth and may it be soon.

    Found the photo of the dog monument moving. National Geographic had an article on hero dogs this month. Yes, I still get the magazine even though I am no longer six years old! Old habits die hard.

    As for Santa Barbara, what a wake up call to know about yet another kettle of hate bubbling and spewing all around us. For the families of those who were slaughtered, this must be  a terrible beyond measure holiday weekend.

    55 here going up to 86.

    Have to get the grill up later today.

    Have a morning Memorial Day post going up at 9 at orange, then need to hose down the porch and prep for bbque.

    Husband called me last night from Philly where he went for a gig…asked me if I was afraid of pit bulls.  I said “no- only of owners who train them to be viscous.

    He’s arranged to get a pit pup (American Staffordshire Terrier) from the owner of the place where he went to play – they are not weaned yet (3 weeks old)

    Our elderly dog is having difficulty walking and will probably not be with us much longer – which will leave our 4 year old male with no pal.

    I have owned lots of dogs in the past – have never had one of this breed, though my friends have a very loveable American Staffordshire Terrier who is a wuss.

    Anyone here ever had one?

    Slept in, watching tv. We have a good chance of rain this afternoon. Very few thoughts in my head – not even an earworm.

    Our visiting friends are on their way home from a small boat Alaska Cruise, so we’ve had fun sharing their adventure. It’s a quiet morning which is good for me as the afternoon and evening will be busy.
