Friday Coffee Hour: Check In and Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. TGIF! Temperature is supposed to be well above freezing here for the first time this week. I think we should all get matching “I survived the Polar Vortex of 2013” shirts. Except you live somewhere warm. Unless your wind chills went below zero, no T-shirt for you.

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

Friday Coffee Hour and check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

Today’s high should be 22. Today also marks day 4 of our daughter’s school being cancelled due to 6 inches of snow plus bitter cold. The bus drivers aren’t dispatched if there’s the least bit of ice on the roads, and we aren’t very good at clearing them if it doesn’t warm up. 6 inches. 4 days. It is too laugh.

6 more days until my shoulder surgery. My husband trs will be guest posting the check-ins for a week or so starting with next Friday. Y’all treat him right!

Option for those of us who don’t drink coffee this morning:

  2. It is -5 with a windchill of -22. Fortunately, there is no school today … yesterday was the last day of the semester and this is a teacher work day. Forecast calls for a high of 25 degrees. A couple of milder days then we plunge back into the below zeroses. A week from Sunday is Imbolc, also known as Candlemas or St. Brighid’s Day. It marks the mid-point between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox … we are almost half way to the day when there will be more light than dark. It is one of my favorite holidays because it brings hope when we need it.

Now, I need more coffee …

and–goody, goody–more snow tomorrow? Not much, though, they say.

JanF, I too am looking forward to Imbolc, a.k.a. Candlemas. Work on the story associated with that holiday is going well, just have to write one or two more scenes and put the finishing touches on it.

Coming down with a cold, which is one of the reasons my son is dropping Miss Pink Cheeks off at our house for breakfast. Grandpa will drive her to day care. I still have to pull myself together to mail a laptop to my friend in Pennsylvania and do a little shopping this morning, but I’d really like to spend this afternoon in bed.

Iriti, we will be keeping you in our thoughts with that shoulder surgery, sending you positive energy next week.

In neighboring Loudoun County, the schools have been closed all week. As I wrote to my friend in Germany, the problem with the suburbs is that they’re very spread out, some of them in the countryside with rough roads; the roads ice over, making driving difficult; and most school bus drivers are women, who do not like to drive on icy roads.

My friend in Germany wrote back that there’s been no snow where she lives, but the postmistress of her local post office has been clapped into jail. “And to think I thought nothing ever happened in our village,” she said.

    Everyone have a good day!

    wind chill -8° F

Just got back from the dentist and they did what is called “relining” my temp with some kind of cushion – they feel 100% better.

Now to find out if I can eat a burger!!

Good luck with your upcoming surgery Iriti.

And a warm pre-welcome to trs.

The weekend is supposed to be in the 50s then back down for the last week in January.  Where I grew up (Houston) winter’s real kick always came in February so…  Good thing I’ve got firewood.  (Guy down the street has been promising me a load of firewood since October – periodically calls to tell me it will be here this weekend as an excuse to borrow some from me.  Presupposing it ever does get here, he’ll owe it to me and not get the money he’s going to ask for.)  Anyway, the sun is shining which is nice but it’s too cold to go out and run errands – they’ll just have to wait until next week – which is probably just as well considering the stuff I’ve still got waiting to do in the office.

Sending good health and healing iriti’s way.  (And anybody else who needs it.)  Looking forward to the Imbolc diary.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

This sign is in the waiting room of one of the doctor’s offices, next to the receptionist’s window.

“Children left unattended will be given espresso and a puppy.”

It was cold last night. Thank goodness it has warmed up here. Temp now is 5ºF at almost 11:00 AM. My feet are cold despite the portable heater under the desk.

Yesterday, the most we were hoping for was a 2 hour delay. When I went to bed last night, the stupid school district still hadn’t decided what to do. But when I got up, they finally had, and they went the full deal — not a delay but whole day off. Other government agencies follow the school district, so we’re closed. There isn’t actually any accumulation, but there were hundreds of accidents. Between the stuff they spread before it got icy, then the ice itself…… it just is a good idea for folks to stay in today.

I actually slept in. Like, seriously slept in. I finally got out of bed before 9:30. (went back to bed after the happy news about out closing). I’m eating breakfast, watching tv, hoping the damn cedar trees get less happy.

No idea what’s on the agenda today.
