Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. Greetings from the frozen Northlands of Virginia.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

    Heading for a sweltering 29 degrees this afternoon; a veritable heat wave after the dreaded polar vortex. Into the 50s by the weekend. Weird.

    I have my pre-op visit for my shoulder today. Still hoping to get surgery moved up sooner than 1/30 but not optimistic.

    It is -7 on its way up to +8. No windchill so -7 feels like -7. Today it matters because schools reopen and I have errands to run. Tomorrow it will be 21, Friday will usher in 3 days of temperatures above freezing.

    I hope your shoulder surgery can be moved up, iriti. I was sitting here starting my morning and realizing how involved my shoulder is in all my activities. Typing, rearranging stacks of paper, reaching over to get a printout, sipping coffee. SIPPING COFFEE!! It must be awful!!

    Busy day today as I tie up loose ends from a project that was completed yesterday. PLEASE stay out of trouble.

    Just finished watching a flock of wild turkeys scavenging near the barn for forage that our free range chickens eat.

    Wish my camera had batteries but I forgot to charge them.

    Counted about 14 birds.

    At least it’s finally not freezing. It’s somewhere between misty and almost raining. The high is supposed to be in the upper 40s. By Friday, it’ll be 70. But there’s still so much cedar pollen & mold in the air, my nose is a water fountain. Most un-amusing. Benadryl every 4 hours (or 3 1/2….) plus herbal allergy stuff. And even so my nose makes with the water faucet imitation.

    Since I fell asleep at work yesterday (did I mention that?), I’m having extra caffeine with breakfast. So: 5 Hour Energy, cheese & crackers so my stomach won’t hate that, and my healthy breakfast & tea. And today is my Friday — don’t have to be back at work till next Wednesday. When we’re having the food day for the January birthdays. I’m supposed to bring queso. And what is on the news this morning but that Kraft is saying there might not be enough Velveeta for queso for Superbowl parties. Great.

    Anyway, I’m wearing lots of purple today — needed the energy. Didn’t bring my gym bag but I may go after work anyway — I got new shoes from Zappos, the men’s versions of the Newtons that I like were on sale, so I bought them. I asked the Zappos people & they said buy around 2 sizes smaller & it should be fine. I’m eager to try them out, but inside the gym so I can return them if I need to. Newtons are known for being minimalist but they do make 1 “stability” shoe, and they have some special kind of foam or something…. Anyway, a rep came to my workout group a few months ago, and he let us try some (he had 2 tubs of demo shoes, and just let us find our size & wear them for a 2 mile walk). I really liked the ones I tried & have been looking for a sale. Got tired of waiting, saw the men’s were on sale et voila. There’s just enough time before the race to break them in.

    A direct image of an exoplanet!!!! So far, all the exoplanets that have been found have been through indirect methods — either the “wobble” method, where they find them by how the star wobbles because of the planet’s orbit; or the “blink” method, where they infer the planet’s bresence by the star’s light blinking when the planet passes between the star & us.

    But this….. this is breathtaking — they have an image of a planet. A real, honest-to-FSM image of another planet. I could cry. I read this yesterday & I still have to stop myself from actually jumping for joy. That we live in such times.

    Registration still in progress (and only one junior-level and two senior-level classes open), I need to get December Leave entered, and also to (hopefully) wrap up May Intersession through Fall 2014 class schedules.  Plus I’ve got a couple of professors moving offices/phones.  At least it should be a productive day.  Stay as warm as you can.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

    Given the time and weather difference I’m on the far fringes of mooseland….way west and north.

    RonK leaves soon for a visit with his mom, so we’ve been watching the Snoqualmie Pass report (mixed rain and snow, no chains required). It’s about a 5 hr drive for him…..Bellingham is even far away from the rest of Wa State!
