The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

    76 degrees with an expected high of 92 degrees. Two more days of this and the weather breaks a bit.

    Busy day but I will try to get back and see what the peeps are peeping about.

    Someone said we are over 600% over out normal quota of rain. I know Mother Nature is ticked off at our Governor and Legislature. Yesterday I went to get the mail and run to the store and we had blue skies, white clouds, and pouring rain.

    Today’s Picture is called Little Sister because I believe that elves and fairies have to be related.

    Our weather advisory is for hot and humid. No potential for rain for a couple of days or more.

    This evening, FFDIL will join us for supper. Tomorrow she’ll drive back to OK to see Son again before school starts for her in MI. They’ve both certainly moved around a lot in the last 3 years.

    Today I’ll sew. I should finish the top for the medallion quilt started earlier this year. This quilt is for me. 🙂

    I just won’t talk about sleep, it’s too depressing.

    Someone left some yogurt with a “free” sticker on it yesterday, so today I’m having yogurt & granola for breakfast. And cherries. I forget what they’re supposed to have in them, but they’re on all the lists of stuff for insomniacs to eat.

    So there was a thing on the Space Station. Glad the astronaut is ok, but a helmet filling with water, that’s bad. I watched the press conference before I left for work. They have no idea why. When he got back in the station, the astronaut drank some of the water from his suit (that’s not where the leak came from) and said it tasted weird.

    Anyway. I was hoping we’d have very few applications so I could persuade myself to leave early & take a nap (but if I stayed all day yesterday, how could I persuade myself to leave today?). But we have 15. And only 2 of us here. I could, of course, take the view that we will have applications left over no matter how hard I work. It’s only possible to do 7 if that’s all you do all day, and we have to dial in to the phone line & take calls, so that’s not happening. So I’ll try very hard to just do a normal amount. Leave early, go to the gym, just to 30 minutes there, maybe sit in the sauna for a second. And come home & take a nap.

    Lots of errands to run this morning and will, hopefully, finish before the heat gets to be too much.  Feel like I should be doing more packing of stuff but moving day is still two months away.  I’ll worry about it next month, said Scarlett.

    in the desert, we’re steadily catching up on our rain for the year. We’re still in a deficit but it’s not as extreme as it was. It will take at least two years of above average rainfall to break our drought and refill the reservoirs. I am so grateful that we have ground water in our county, as long as we can afford to bring it to the surface we will be okay. Like most people out here I spend a lot of time thinking about water.

    First off, 100°F is a dramatic number because of the extra digit, but pretty arbitrary, don’t you think?

    Secondly, it fails to take into account microclimates.  Our official reports consistently have been in the high 90’s for the past few weeks, but downtown thermometers — where I spend most of my time — have been registering 100-102°.

    Finally, and I’d better not hear any grief about my reliance on the “rule of threes,” some of us start feeling the heat way before it hits 100!

    So, whatever the meteorologists say, we’re in a heat wave.  That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ with it.

    (Can y’all tell I woke up feeling a bit cranky this morning?  And we still have August coming up.)

    Overcast, but for once it’s not foggy out. I’m not expecting sunshine anytime soon, but if it happens I’ll be happy. At least it’s not broiling hot, nor do we have anything like thunderstorms.

    Going to be another hot one in Delaware today. It’s already 87 degrees at 9:30, headed to 95. At least the humidity will only be 50%. I miss my Tucson dry heat.

    So, gonna be a somewhat busy day; working on getting ourselves a website for the floorsuckers. Fees at ebay are choking us. Want to do some design work on the watchbands. And I’d like to spend at least a few minutes spinning today; my wheels are sadly neglected.

    Interviewed seven law enforcement job applicants for another county. There is tremendous turnover, especially in correctional work. It takes a special person. Makes me sad to see eager applicants who think it is one thing, but turns out to be something else, and they quit, often before they even find another job.

    It is discouraging to see regular offenders come back time and again. Some of them serve their sentence, and are back in the afternoon after being released that morning. As one officer said, “I don’t think he hardly had time to get out of the parking lot before he was re-arrested.”

    In one particular case, the offender had been in jail for domestic violence. His wife came to pick him up when he was released. He flew into a rage and started hitting her while they were still parked in front of the jail. A couple of officers were in the parking lot, saw what he was doing, and re-arrested him. So much for helping people. Law enforcement is rated as one of the most high stress jobs of all, right up there with airline captain, air traffic controller and emergency room doctors.

    else to put it:

    Public Policy Polling has NC Gov. McCrory’s approval rate sinking 15% in the last month presumably because he flipped on signing an anti-choice bill.  Dude is a Republican.  Who the heck thought he wouldn’t sign any bill restricting abortion rights that passed the legislature?  Seriously.

    I mentioned 2 or 3 weeks ago that the grocery never charged us for the catering for Son’s party. They were supposed to run it on the day it was delivered, but they never did. So I called and told them, and the woman said she’d look into it. While we were gone I got an email from her that they had shredded the credit card info before running it. I emailed back that I’d contact her when we got back.

    So I just called. She thanked me for getting back in touch. I said, “Well, we figured we would either pay you or make the same donation to the food pantry.”

    “Oh, do THAT!” she said.

    “Okay. They’ll get a lot more food out of it than we did.”

    She was so pleased — probably already corrected her records for the lost payment and it would have been even more hassle to correct it again.

    So Thursday I’ll take another check to the food pantry. For the amount of money we’ll give them, they should be able to buy about $2500 of food.

    Makes me feel like this is all turning out just fine.

    But after reading the weather reports from across the country I’m not complaining!

    I see the Dr today for what I hope will be some much needed pain relief from the arthritis flare I’m suffering through. Every joint is throbbing and my fingers have never been so knobby. Seeing the change in my hands this week is alarming…and whatever is happening in my knees is annoying!

    It’s the Dr’s first day back from vacation so I know I’ll have a long wait. Even with a good book and my iPhone the exam room becomes very confining.

    not enough to get us out of the drought, but enough to start the grass growing again.  Mine greened up over night.  I’m having sleep issues so I guess I join the cranky squad.  Need to get hourly payroll out (runs tomorrow and has to go through the approval chain first) but I’ll try to check back later.   After I get moar coffee.  {{{HUGS}}}
