Friday Coffee Hour and check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

Good morning Peeps! Crazy week this. Last week of the second quarter is always the maddest at my current place of employment. If I make it through today I will have survived, yay me.

70 degrees right now, headed for 85 with a chance of thunderstorms this evening. Had a good soaking rain yesterday, which was nice.

  2. It is a splendid 66 degrees here with an expected high of 74 degrees. The heat wave is broken (for now).

Last business day of the month nearly snuck up on me (I knew it was close but yesterday I realized it was Friday). I am trying to figure out if I should hang out in the blogs all day or try to get 30 hours of work done in 8 hours. Thinking … thinking …

  3. We already went for our walk. I got … TWO hours of sleep last night? Something like that. Tried sleeping on the couch but that wasn’t better. Went back to bed about 4:20 and Jim was already awake, so wth, we went ahead and walked.

tsokay. I can nap later, more than once if I want to.

    Oh yeah, happy Friday!

    again all day today.

Am spending the day at my goddaughter’s home nearby – she’s having a celebration.

    Have a good weekend folks.

  5. If you are a government employee WITH an ID, a lot of hotels give a better discount than they do for other reasons. They may check whether you are fedl govt or not, and there may be a difference in price for that. But it’s worth asking about it.

Have recorded 40.5 hrs this week so far, and I know I probably didn’t include all the overtime I’ve done this week.  Will be calling it a day around 1pm – 3 hours early.  I’ll get some errands done and more likely to have nothing to do for the 4 day weekend next week.

They’re predicting 105 for today. At least I slept into the 4 o’clock hour this morning… maybe 4:25. So, a tiny victory.

Anyway, very few thoughts in my head at this hour. Drinking tea, eating breakfast.

Another scorcher here today with some relief in sight.

What is the drama du jour? It sure has been a week loaded with stuff.

I hope everyone here has the weekend that they want to have.

get dressed and out of the house to get my errands and laundry done.  Got an e-mail last night about my upcoming (gasp!) 55th high school reunion.  Haven’t made it to a single reunion yet and probably will miss this one too.

I’m not going to spend much time outside to find out.

I had an emergency intake walk in right before closing yesterday who couldn’t be put off until today.  It got interesting, because I had scheduled some after hours appointments to accommodate clients whose work schedules didn’t permit seeing them during our open hours.  So, to maintain privacy, I was shuffling between them in different rooms.

Afterward, I took a young man to pick up some groceries to tide him over until he gets his first paycheck — he can’t get to the food pantry when it’s open — and then I oversaw our volunteers helping a woman and her children move from the local family violence shelter to their new apartment.  We’ll be continuing to work with her as she continues to work toward independence.

The first client in our Safe and Sustainable Housing (SASH) program reported in and is doing well.  This is the longest she’s been able to maintain housing and employment — six months — in years.  She had one short slip in her alcohol recovery during that period, but was able to rebound before it reached the point of causing dire consequences — a first, and a major milestone.  I’m really proud of her, and of the volunteer case coordinator working with her.

A couple I’ve been working with on issues which have included serious mutual abuse split up this week, and I’m seeing the remaining party daily.  It was a case where one was ready to make healthy changes, and the other resistant.  While it is traumatic, and one doesn’t want to write anyone off, I really think each of them will have a better chance at getting healthy apart.  I’ll be meeting with the remaining party on a daily basis for awhile, as he’s particularly vulnerable right now.  And, of course, we’ve gotten mental health professionals involved, and are working closely with them.  (Nor would we refuse service to the party who “boogied,” should he reappear, and want to become an active client again.)

You can see why I am always a bit flummoxed by requests to describe what exactly it is that we do.  There’s really no such thing as a typical week, nor for that matter, a typical charity.  At least, in the case of the latter, if there were, I wouldn’t want ours to be one.

with good cloud cover. We hit 104 yesterday and will get there again today, some relief predicted for next week with thunderstorms expected. We have been out to the hospital for me to get blood drawn, nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Got lucky with the tech, she hit a vein on the first try. Cant’ remember the last time someone was able to do that. I started a roast in the slow cooker last night, it smelled really good this morning. Now all I have to do is finish the gravy and make some mashed potatoes, we made the coleslaw last night. It will be a good country meal for our friends with plenty of leftovers for the weekend. My friend is a much better cook than I am, my thing is baking, so it’s a bit intimidating cooking for them. She’s not as picky as her husband though, she knows this isn’t my strong suit and appreciates the effort.

    sometime or other (probably while I’m waiting for approval on something before I can do anything else LOL) – Have a stellar day.  {{{HUGS}}}

Late start today as we are having old friends over this morning and I needed to shower and get the house picked up first.  We are good to go now.

I just have to point out that Stephen Colbert has been awesome this week.  I will miss him tonight.

  14. We have severe storms coming through. Going to hit the store before they start.

Finally saw the allergist/asthma Doctor. The good news is that my lung function is doing pretty good. She is putting me on an inhaler to strengthen my lungs. She said the cleaning of the old, dusty, moldy house was what put my respiratory system into a tailspin for months. The bad news is that I’m allergic to everything! I can’t afford the shots so we are trying heavy duty antihistamines and a nasal spray for the sinuses. The nausea isn’t allergy related so most likely was food poisoning followed by the hantavirus. Am feeling better and can actually eat now.

The house will close next week so that will be a load off my mind and relieve the extreme financial burden I’ve been in trying to keep the house going.

Working on art and writing this weekend. Figured out where The Wizard’s Door fits in the story. My lead character is not going to be happy because I am about to complicate his life. 😉

Another bright morning, sunny and clear. Should be a hot afternoon.

I’m grumpy and sad this morning. Yesterday my neighborhood pharmacy dumped me as a customer after nearly 20 years. The pharmacist apologized but said my prescriptions are too expensive for him and that Walgreens is killing his business. Meanwhile he’s transferring my prescriptions to the next-nearest pharmacy — a Walgreens several blocks further away.

I understand completely but it doesn’t make me happy.

here in the Armstrong Valley.  Woke up to sunshine instead of fog.  Everything looks fresh and clear after our rain earlier in the week.  I’m enjoying the cool of the morning while it lasts, and watching the hummers battle for spots at the feeder.

  17. a man stopped me. I’d been volunteering, working by myself, no one else inside. He looked pretty rough but not frightening in any way. He said someone told him he might be able to get clothes there — he’d just got a new job at a local grocery and needs a white shirt and black dress trousers. I AM the one who knows what clothes we have, and unfortunately I had to tell him no, we only have children’s clothes. And in the “big boys'” sizes there wouldn’t be anything like that.

I was on my way to Goodwill to drop off things the pantry couldn’t use. I offered to take him there. He said no, he wouldn’t get vouchers for that until Tuesday. I quickly thought through what clothes Son left behind, and couldn’t think of dress clothes like that.

He asked if the pantry is open today and I had to tell him no, not today, but tomorrow from 10-noon.

“Oh,” he said. “I have to work. I have another job at Subway.”

Guy is trying to hold things together, has TWO jobs. He needs some decent clothes, NOT NEW, just decent, and some food to tide him over. And I couldn’t help.

    Sad.

My PhD advisor is leaving town in about a week for a few weeks, and I will be hitting a lull in my work.  Is anyone out there interested in a series about the various weather platforms and how they produce weather?  And in why we need to fully fund all the platforms?

…to my new pharmacy, the Walgreen’s at UCSF. It’s not enormously far, but it IS about three times further than my neighborhood pharmacy.

And when I got there they had no record of my prescriptions being transferred over from the other pharmacy, so my walk was in vain (except for the exercise, of course).

I got home and called the old pharmacy to ask if they had sent over my prescriptions as promised yesterday and they hadn’t. So I need to go back to Walgreen’s again this afternoon because I need refills right away. I’m trying to maintain a Zen-like calm about the whole thing, but I was a little pissed off about the broken promise.

Anyway, it’s a gorgeous day out there and I did enjoy the walk even though I got a bit overheated.
