Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. Don’t forget to let your peeps know where to find you.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

    can’t believe I still have to have heat on all day (and night)

    Sigh.

    We’re still living with a frost advisory – this is making a major mess for our local farmers.

    Right eye laser surgery  completed successfully. Intraocular pressure now down to 12 which I’m assured is great.

    Left eye in 2-3 weeks, then on to cataract specialist.

    61 degrees with an expected high of 77. Summer has returned to a very grateful state. I’m in the mood for a cookout.

    Something is amiss at one of the switthing stations. Tech support opened a trouble ticket which will be addressed: between 8 and noon. (Insert shock emoticon here). I reminded them that this is a business and that in 2013 businesses need the internet to run. “Yes, ma’am. Is there anything else I can do for you?” How about calling all my clients and telling them why I can’t work on their stuff today?

    I am going to eat breakfast and try to figure out if this is a sign that I need to sort my to-do stack without interruptions.

    with a chance of thunderstorms before it gets to the high sixties. Overslept so haven’t had a chance to read the news. On the other hand, I’m afraid to.

    I just got the news that one of my art pieces is going to be the cover of the next Hugo award winning fanzine The Drink Tank. I sent Chris Garcia a bunch of pictures yesterday and he loved them. Mo Starkey the current Hugo award winning Fan Artist told me that she did the paste up last night of the cover for Chris and he is going crazy for it. Woo-Hoo! My first cover art! Celebration time!

    I slept better/more last night than I have been, but I was more exhausted when I went to bed, so it was only right.

    63° here now and going to low 80s. Yesterday it was 97 or something crazy like that.

    The house is shaping up. ALL my quilting/sewing stuff is put away except a needle and thread, so I can sew stripes on Son’s sleeves. Today I need to go buy hundreds of dollars’ worth of groceries… Not a quick trip, nor cheap.

    We could officially plant tomatoes today, assuming we had any tomato plants.  Have a morning of boring telephone calls ahead but really must get to the gym too.  Went yesterday and was surprised I could only exercise for half an hour!  I’m really out of shape.

    Glad to hear the surgery went well for you, Denise!  Hope you’re comfortable.

    Miss Preschooler enjoyed making muffins so much that she now wants to make cupcakes.  I’ve got a terrific recipe for Vegan Chocolate Cupcakes, so I think we’ll make those.

    The news is too depressing.  This, in conjunction with the very downbeat novel I’m reading, makes me feel totally blah. I’ve put off reading The Dovekeepers for months, as I know what happened at Masada. The novel is about the events and people leading up to it.  Had to put it down last night and read something more cheerful for a while.

    My semester is basically over. Nearly all my grading is done. I am headed to Hawaii on Friday for three weeks of archaeological fieldwork. WOOT.

    G’mornin’ meesepeeps. A neighbor put out the fire while it was still tiny. We can hope the kids who started it were scared so witless they’ll never play with matches again, or at least they won’t do it near a patch of pine needles.

    I haz two reports to edit today, so I’ll be around.

    Yesterday it was actually hot, the kids played in water and I think they will get to do that again today.  Finally got some good news about mom.  Her lymph nodes are clean so the lumpectomy and radiation are the proper treatment for her.  She was so relieved about the nodes. I could hear it in her voice that she relaxed a bit with that news.  Poor thing.  I would take it from her if I could.  She is such an anxious person to begin with, this is excruciating for her.  But they told her if you have to ave breast cancer her type is “the best of the bad deal”.  So there is that.

    It’s cooler than yesterday, about 50°F right now.

    Got my vicarious kicks last night watching two hours of Chef Ramsay swearing at dumb contestants on Hell’s Kitchen. The show fascinates me for several reasons, not least that the winner actually gets to run a real restaurant. This season’s crop of contestants don’t appear to be the brightest bulbs in the chandelier…

    an even 50 degrees already when I got up at 5.  If today’s anything like yesterday, I’m going to be too busy to hang around here, much as I would like to.

    which may keep the temps from going up too much.  Not sure I believe them – it’s bright and sunny right now – but then meteorologists are having trouble predicting the “new normal” so I try to cut them a little slack (and prepare for everything).  Charlie is dang-near acting like a kitten again now he’s pretty sure Reggie is gone – from loudly demanding to go outside (not unless I have time to follow him around and grab him when he heads for the fence) to being a fluffy-tummied hand trap, I haven’t seen this behavior from him since before Reggie joined us!  Hope everybody is having a good day.  {{{HUGS}}} bf
