Interrogatories

(Questions suggested by Melanie) Most of the holidays listed at the bottom of this diary aren’t real Congress-mandated holidays. What kind of holidays do you think the present Congress would propose? What holiday would you propose if you had that kind of power?

Speaking of those holidays, today is National Fruit Cocktail Day. Do you actually eat that flavorless, overly sweetened, canned fruit? Or did you think they meant Daiquiris?

Do you still have hope in mankind? If so, what is it that gives you that hope?

Take your gun to work day.

What holiday would you propose if you had that kind of power?

National brotherhood week (H/T to Tom Lehrer)

Speaking of those holidays, today is National Fruit Cocktail Day. Do you actually eat that flavorless, overly sweetened, canned fruit? Or did you think they meant Daiquiris?

I don’t eat fruit cocktail.  I think they meant “oooh! another campaign donation!”

Do you still have hope in mankind? If so, what is it that gives you that hope?

    Of course I have hope!

Lots of things give me hope; there has been enormous progress over time on a vast array of issues. Violence is down. War is less common. Genocide is now looked on as a bad thing (even by the non-victims). Slavery isn’t condoned. Democracy is spreading.

Imagine if, in 1960, someone had said that, in the course :

      The Soviet Union will collapse.

      Germany will be re-united.

South Africa will have Black majority rule.

1/4 of the Atlanta police force will be Black

There will be openly gay members of congress

Marriage equality will be the law in a dozen states.

Everyone would have said you were nuts!

Most of the holidays listed at the bottom of this diary aren’t real Congress-mandated holidays. What kind of holidays do you think the present Congress would propose? Re-enact the War of Northern Aggression Day.

What holiday would you propose if you had that kind of power? Have a beer after work day.

Speaking of those holidays, today is National Fruit Cocktail Day. Do you actually eat that flavorless, overly sweetened, canned fruit? No. Or did you think they meant Daiquiris? Love them!

Do you still have hope in mankind? If so, what is it that gives you that hope? Yes, I do. In my darkest days, I think that we have passed the point of no return on climate change, but I am encouraged by the changing attitudes toward marriage equity. the speed and the direction of the change give me hope.

  3. Most of the holidays listed at the bottom of this diary aren’t real Congress-mandated holidays. What kind of holidays do you think the present Congress would propose? Honor a Bank Blood Sucker Day

What holiday would you propose if you had that kind of power? Honor Your Immigrant and Native American Ancestors Day.

Speaking of those holidays, today is National Fruit Cocktail Day. Do you actually eat that flavorless, overly sweetened, canned fruit? Or did you think they meant Daiquiris? Oh I make it with real fruit and toasted coconut. More of an Ambrosia really.

Do you still have hope in mankind? Yes but then I’m an optimist

If so, what is it that gives you that hope? Everytime I look at my Community Quilt and realize that their are people out there who really care.

That could be rude and demeaning.

I wouldn’t mind jumping side by side with a frog.

Of course, if we got to be friends, and it was the frog’s idea of a funny thrill in good nature; I guess i’d do it. But not with a strange frog.

That’s where I draw the line. And I don’t care a flying fig what national celebration day of whatnot Congress thinks is too irrelevant to overlook.

Except, now, when IHOP was giving out free pancakes, that is a proper holiday and can be endorsed.

Also, i’d go for a national month of give us our money back, stop fooling around, quit cheatin, stealin and lyin, and put big bums in jail, stop tormenting poor folks, let the harmless out of prison, and all racists and such, shut up. If this causes dead air on a lot of radio and tv stations: good!

Congressional holidays:  blastocyst appreciation day, private school teacher day- we charge you more to pay them less.

    My holiday:  jubilee

Fruit cocktail:  no way, but I did as a kid.  I don’t drink sweet alcoholic drinks as every time I do I seem to vomit.

Hope:  yeah, I do.  What gives me hope is that we really are teaching our kids the value of equality.  Look at attitudes towards gay marriage and minorities in younger demographics…we are winning that fight.  Gone globally, those attitudes change the world in ways we can’t imagine.

  6. What kind of holidays do you think the present Congress would propose?

National Give Up Your Right to Privacy Day.

What holiday would you propose if you had that kind of power?

    Just Be Nice, Dammit! Day

National Fruit Cocktail Day. Do you actually eat that flavorless, overly sweetened, canned fruit? Or did you think they meant Daiquiris?

No fruit cocktail for me, and as to alcohol, I prefer mine straight.

Do you still have hope in mankind? If so, what is it that gives you that hope?

Yes, I have hope. It is a dance, steps forward and steps back. And we continue to stumble over our own feet and our partners’ feet. And we continue to run into the others dancing. We’re like children in a ballroom dance class who don’t want to be there. Our progress is slow, but we improve a little bit at a time.

I saw the Agents of SHIELD promo last night. Joss Whedon is back on tv. If Joss getting a show isn’t proof that at least some humans have brains, I don’t know what else could be. Also – I’m going to Star Trek on Thursday.

Actually, considering that I was out of town Friday night and did a triathlon Saturday morning, I have a mega-geeky weekend. Neil Gaiman wrote this week’s ep of Dr. Who. Then Buzz Aldrin & Bobak Fedrowski (the NASA mohawk guy) were on the Nerdist, and I watched the Big Brain Theory, where Federowski was the celebrity judge. So the fact that I can have a nerdy weekend like that gives me hope.

to two great ’60s voices:  Steve Winwood and Eric Burdon!

Very odd (and most welcome) weather in DC yesterday and today:  Cool, low humidity, breezy.  It’s more like fall than spring.

Present Congress:  Fort Sumter Day; Joseph McCarthy’s birthday; Ronald Reagan’s birthday

My holiday:  Day Off Between Presidents’ Day and Memorial Day Day

I have eaten fruit cocktail, but I wouldn’t.

Guarded hope when I think of the banning of DDT, above-ground nuclear testing (although we should ban it all); the shift in attitudes on marriage equality.  We do occasionally do something right, although it gets more difficult when people willfully choose pseudoscience over science.

I say good, because I’m on vacation this week.  Woo!

*(Questions suggested by Melanie) Most of the holidays listed at the bottom of this diary aren’t real Congress-mandated holidays. What kind of holidays do you think the present Congress would propose?*  Well, the House would probably propose stuff like National Corporations are People week and National Pity the Rich because they have hide their money to avoid taxes day and crap like that.  The Senate would probably do National The Rebulicans are OK People Day because they’d bully Reid into it & he’d cave.

What holiday would you propose if you had that kind of power?  National Margarita Day, National Vacation Week, National Blueberries Day, National Coffee Month

Speaking of those holidays, today is National Fruit Cocktail Day. Do you actually eat that flavorless, overly sweetened, canned fruit? Or did you think they meant Daiquiris?  I vote Daiquiris.  Fruit Salad/Cocktail is only good if you make it yourself with fresh fruit.

Do you still have hope in mankind?  Yes  If so, what is it that gives you that hope?  Kids today.  Their generation seems much more tolerant of race, creed, and sexual identity than older generations.  Plus they’ve grown up knowing nothing but America being at war, and I’m pretty sure when they get the chance to run things, they’re going to ground us for a good long time while they fix things. 😉
