Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. Don’t forget to let your peeps know where to find you.

Snow has started and is supposed to deposit 10 to 15 inches in the Northern Shenandoah Valley, 15+ if you listen to some sources. Me, I prefer to tune them out…lalalalalala I can’t hear you!!

Meanwhile trs, who as part of his job responsibilities will spend the next 12 hours or so attempting to keep the streets clear, is showing little to no sympathy for my plight. And Kidlet, who isn’t likely to find her way back to school before next Monday is finding the whole thing highly enjoyable.

The morning check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

    Outside it’s very quiet.  There’s a lovely stillness that I think of as “snow silence.”  I like it.

    How’s everyone doing?  So far we still have electricity.  Dearly Beloved went out to get gas for the generator yesterday, in case we need it.  I’m going downstairs now to put a log on the fire and see whether The Washington Post has arrived.

    THe wind blew like hell whenever I was awake to hear it during night , and it got fairly cold , forecast low of 30. Tsula went from staying at the window open just  a little for venting(growling at rabbits who nightly eat flowering plants trying to climb out of their bulbs) to her tent I make of about 1/3 of my blanket for her on cold nights. It’s calm now , an overcast dawn , and kinda chilly in the house. Coffepot  here I come.

    well, most hoomins didn’t enjoy the white stuff but the Woozles i walked yesterday had an absolute B L A S T!

    high thirties, and think we are out of the snow zone.  For those of you who are, hope you have supplies and if, when shoveling, you start to get chest pain, STOP and call the doc.

    We’re both working, me freezing in the shipping trailer at work (the normal guy hasn’t made it in) and him plowing snow.

    The worst thing for trs isn’t the plowing…

    We got eight inches or so here in st Charles, Illinois.  It is beautiful.  My husband has today off so he and the kids are headed out to snowblower and shovel right now.  Amazing how excited kids get about snow.  We were out in it several times yesterday too but they can’t wait to get out there.

    and I have a 2 hour delay–which means I will be leaving soon. It also means I got to sleep until 7:00 🙂

    I’m thinking most the school districts are trying real hard not to cancel, so they don’t have to make up the day. The snow is supposed to stop around noon to 1:00 today. So, if the buses are successful picking up students, then they will definitely be able to get them home.

    In the mountains just east of here, a whole different story with much snow. I’m glad I’m on this side of the storm.

    this morning but the high temps for the next few days will be in the 50s and 60s.  Will certainly help get rid of the snow iceburgs everywhere in town.  One of my nephews lives about 30 miles north of Columbia and he was one of many who had a long time (24+ hours) without power.  The Columbia newspaper did an article about his family and how his wife and kids amused themselves in the dark.  When the batteries on their Iphones and Ipads needed recharging, they charged them up in one of the cars. Photos of the igloo one of the kids built to store milk and juice and another of nephew bundled up in front of the bbq grill cooking dinner.  They seemed to enjoy themselves in spite of the inconvenience.

    headache though??  No snowing here, it’s all moved east now.  We got about 6 inches total, Monday and Tuesday.

    The damned casino bill passed with 61%.  Well, a handful of people might get decent jobs, if they’re buds with the owner, and the rest will be just your ordinary low wage jobs.  Then there’s going to be a lot more accidents on the curves of the interstate in downtown.  There are some really, really nasty curves downtown in order to get the interstate between some very established institutions and ‘access’ to downtown.

    That isn’t always the case. We are about ? 25-30 miles apart, and while the same systems hit us, the impact can be very different.

    About 25 degrees here this morning. The sun is supposed to come out. I’ll look forward to it.

    Had a note from Son this morning, asking about an investments book. He said

    As someone about to make a real salary for once and (hopefully) be able to put some of it away, I’d like to have a better grasp on investing. I know I can always turn to you if I have questions, but sometimes I don’t know what to ask. Do you have any recommended books that I could check out that would give a nice foundation to investing? I found this on amazon and the reviewers seemed to think it was a ‘classic’ of sorts. Have you heard of it?

    It’s good that I am still useful to him. 🙂

    It warmed back up here today. Coldest day of the year here Monday night. 40! No snow here. But one of last year’s Amaryllis is fixing to bloom and I thought the bud looked sort of pretty?

    we have no snow and it’s barely cold this morning. The weather guy was telling us to expect “breezy” which out here means steady winds at 20-25 with gusts staying mostly in that range. It’s like how the Innuit have all those words to describe snow, we have them for the wind. We’ve had reports of many arrowheads exposed after the last big blow, there must be millions of them out there since oil field hands have been finding them since the beginning of oil exploration here in the 20s.

    We have a wind advisory until midnight but fortunately no rain or snow. Working like crazy on getting my artwork updated.

    In the spirit of “letting your peeps know where you are” I guess I should share the news that I’ll likely be going home tomorrow. I can’t really say I disagree, mostly (based on how the PT is going), but I do admit to feeling a little nervous…

    I’ve been too busy to spend much time reading and posting anywhere lately, but I had to come over for some moose calm after visiting another site this morning.

    I guess I just can’t work up enough anger to be a proper progressive.  

    I really hope people don’t follow some of the financial advice that is given in some comments over on that other place. It can be dangerously bad.

    Anyway… nice fresh layer of snow here in Chicago. Pleasant weather.

    I overslept until 9:45. I’m bewildered. Making second cup of coffee. This I never do. Stay tuned in case I dither in an interesting way. Ignore me if I make a fool of myself. Permission to tell me to shut up granted.

    The Company sent me a report to edit. Don’t do me any favors, now that you’ve raised my pay by 25% and cut my hours by 50%. Okay, thanks for the raise, but still.

    Oh look, the research was done in Maryland, and not by me.

    I had to be at the hospital 30 minutes away at 7:30 without so much as a sip of coffee. “Don’t take your pills, don’t chew gum, and if you brush your teeth, don’t swallow anything.” They put me in one of their lovely gowns and took me into the bowels of radiology for a lovely breakfast of barium consumed on a tiltawhirl table.

    I don’t recommend starting a winter morning in this fashion. 🙂

    On the weather front: It’s 36° up here on Pikes Peak and mostly cloudy. Our next storm begins on Friday night.

    What am I supposed to do with the sudoku book once I’ve done all the puzzles that suit me? I do the ones marked “Hard.” Challengers and super-challengers are way too hard for me. Easy and medium are too easy. So I do about a quarter of the puzzles in the book, and then… what? What should I do with the rest? I’ve never figured out THAT part of the puzzle.

    And the predictions are for everyplace you will go through? BSRH jr is having a special birthday and we are bringing the brithday eatings to be baked, roasted and iced there. Did not count on icing on the road, though. NYC is snowless. Where we are in metro Boston will be slushy. Inbetween is the hard to guess part. Anyone?

    Intermittent heavy snows, well blown-about by brisk wind, but we’re lucky if we have 2 inches max.  And it’s still too warm for the roads to freeze.

    So this is just another reason for D.C. to panic (are they? it’s so hard to tell these days, when they’re all running around with hair on fire, all the time), and for my enlightened county to send its troops home.

    I’m ready to dig in the garden already, aren’t you?  Haven’t yet decided what I’ll plant for the voles and what I’ll keep in planters safe on the deck.  Hoping against hope our summer isn’t Australian, like last year.  Even the habaneros and jalapenos were burned up.

    (bought a new car a month ago — the old one had too thoroughly earned it’s nickname of “the money pit” — getting a new Honda is actually cheaper)

    Anyway, I tried to take the temporary plates off & my hands just aren’t strong enough. I e-mailed the dealer here in town where I’m going to get service & they put them on for me! I thought that was really sweet of them.

    I’ve figured out the basics of my mom’s kindle, am reading a James Patterson on it. There’s a couple of other mysteries & a book about the history of France that I want to read. That should take enough time that I’ll be ready to put my own account on it.  I downloaded a free book from the Baen free books page last night, thought I unzipped it & put it on the kindle, but it isn’t there. That could be either my lack of knowledge of Macs (my brother handed me down his Mac Book last Thanksgiving) or of the Kindle, or both — I know very, very little about either one.

    Anyway, I stayed at work all day, though it was hard. Tomorrow I leave early for physical therapy. More people to tell. Will try to make myself to to the gym after.
