Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

The Daily F Bomb, Monday 1/28

Monday, Monday… much more like the Mamas and Papas than the Bangles. No matter how much coffee I pound down, I cannot be manic on Mondays. Not that my Monday experience matches this one…

Now, tell me… What is your favorite day of the week? Do you have it embroidered on your underwear? What is your favorite song to dance to, the one you can’t sit still when you hear it? What is the first record or CD you bought with your own money for yourself? What is the last music you bought?

Now let us partake of the tawdriness that is Twitter:

Now, sit down and pay attention to your history lesson!

On This Day

In 1754, Horace Walpole coined the word serendipity in a letter to Horace Mann (at least it is the first known usage of the word). Note that back in those days, Horace was apparently a pretty common name.

In 1813, Pride and Prejudice was first published. Austen had sold the entire copyright to the publisher, so missed out on some considerable profits.

In 1915, the Coast Guard was created by an act of Congress.

In 1916, Louis D. Brandeis was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson to the Supreme Court, becoming its first Jewish member. Some of his fellow justices treated him shabbily due to his faith.

In 1958, the Lego company patented the design of its Lego bricks, still compatible with bricks produced today, and just as painful to step on.

In 1959, Vince Lombardi was named head coach of the NFL’s Green Bay Packers.

In 1986, space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, killing all seven crew members.

In 2003, President George W. Bush lied in his State of the Union address that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had sought uranium from Africa. (The claim was later disputed by former ambassador Joseph Wilson, who had been asked by the CIA to investigate, which of course opened up that can of worms leading to the conviction of Scooter Libby.)

What is your favorite day of the week? Caturday!

Do you have it embroidered on your underwear? LOL

What is your favorite song to dance to, the one you can’t sit still when you hear it? Brown Sugar by the Rolling Stones. It reminds me of the great party days when I was in grad school.

What is the first record or CD you bought with your own money for yourself? CD!!!! I am old. I think it was the 45 of Hey, Paula.

What is the last music you bought? I honestly can’t remember.

  2. slksfca

…was a 45RPM of the Beach Boys’ “I Get Around,” when I was in elementary school. I seem to remember it costing 99 cents.

Last recording purchased is trickier. The last CD was the Off-Broadway cast recording of Grey Gardens back in 2007, but I’ve bought music since then in MP3 format.

    Good morning, people,and Happy Monday!

Today I am starting Phase 2 of this weight lifting/work-out program I got through http://www.bodybuilding.com Not really my thing, but I really want to get into shape, get stronger. I’ve read that lifting weights actually helps all the way to the cellular level. If I stick with it, it will be a major miracle.

Have a great start to the week, everybody.

    My Monday song:

    …which I can’t hear and keep still:

I introduced a college roommate (a jazz guitarist) to this song and he still thanks me for it, 35-or-so years later. ๐Ÿ™‚

Favorite day of the week is Friday, because it begins the longest space of not-at-work time before Monday.  By Saturday, I’ve already started to fret about Monday, but Friday evening, I am relaxed!

Of course!  I’ve bought a whole week’s worth of Friday.

Dance song from a most unexpected source:  Brian Eno’s No One Receiving.  Honest!  Try it out!

The first record I bought for myself was probably a 45, lost in the mist of time.  Perhaps Percolator, by Billy Joe and the Checkmates.

Last CD I bought was one of those John Zorn productions that he doesn’t play on, called Ipos.  The very last music I bought was two very, very guilty pleasure mp3s by Gary Lewis and the Playboys:  Green Grass and She’s Just My Style.

Either that, or the occasion of the letter was very serendipitous!  Or maybe just coincidental.  Or an example of synchronicity.  Or something.

So, after all that work she was still in need of a husband??

In 1986 I worked for an airline company. The TV was on in the front office. I can’t begin to tell you how we felt as we watched that happen.

…shining through the window right in my eyes. It’s nearly as bright as my monitor. Anyone know off-hand when it is (or was) full?

    If I had a good enough camera I’d grab a pic…

What is your favorite day of the week? Saturday Afternoon.  Won’t you try?

Do you have it embroidered on your underwear? If I go commando, that would require a tatoo

What is your favorite song to dance to, the one you can’t sit still when you hear it? Master Blaster, Stevie Wonder

What is the first record or CD you bought with your own money for yourself? Sounds of Silence, Simon and Garfunkel

What is the last music you bought? Thick as a Brick II, Iam Anderson

Kind of reminds me of the Ernest William Christmas painting pictured above. Mine isn’t nearly as nice, but similar in a way?

  12. What is your favorite day of the week?

I don’t really have a favorite. Since becoming a consultant, the weekend/weekday thing is mostly whether my kids are at home or school.

Do you have it embroidered on your underwear?

    Errr what? Embroidered underwear?

What is your favorite song to dance to, the one you can’t sit still when you hear it?

I can’t listen to Beethoven or Mozart without a strong urge to conduct.

What is the first record or CD you bought with your own money for yourself?

I don’t remember. Growing up, my brother bought most of the music. My first purchase was probably something by Bach, which would not have been one of my brother’s purchases.

What is the last music you bought?

I don’t remember that either. Might have been something by  Art Tatum or John Coltrane.

Had a tennis lesson this morning. Ow ๐Ÿ˜‰

What is your favorite day of the week?

Not sure I have one, since I don’t work anymore. Now ask me what my favorite time of the day is ๐Ÿ˜‰

Do you have it embroidered on your underwear?

    Who are you, Lenny Bruce?

What is your favorite song to dance to, the one you can’t sit still when you hear it?

“Hippy Hippy Shake” by The Swingin’ Blue Jeans. And the Bunny Hop ๐Ÿ™‚ I also have a hard time sitting still when “Jaan Pehechaan Ho” is playing.

What is the first record or CD you bought with your own money for yourself?

I am betting it was a 45 by Paul Revere and the Raiders. Either them or Herman’s Hermits.

What is the last music you bought?

Thanks to a lovely person who gave me an Amazon GC for Xmas, I just downloaded some songs by Bronze Radio Return, The Lumineers, and Imagine Dragons. Really loving all of it!
