It’s gonna be a nice day. Though apparently beachgoers must watch for “elevated surf and dangerous currents.” Sounds like the GOS!

Lewis at last gets an answer to a problem that has been vexing him for some time: “What do they do with all those fish?”

The Indians who visited us today understood us sufficiently to inform us that the whites did not barter for the pounded fish; that it was purchased and consumed by the Clatsops, Chinnooks, Cathlahmah’s and Skillutes. [just one big sic for all L&C – this entry’s spelling is really quite good, for them]

See for instance Lewis’ lengthy worrying over this on the 14th:

     photo Cascades_rapids_zps7605cf1d.jpg

From the best estimate we were enabled to make as we dscended the Columbia was conceived that the natives inhabiting that noble stream, for some miles above the great falls [Celilo Falls – melvin]to the grand rappids [Cascade Rapids, at right] inclusive annually prepare about 30,000 lbs. of pounded sammon for market.    but whether this fish is an article of comerce with the whites or is exclusively sold to and consumed by the natives of the sea Coast, we are at a loss to determine.    the first of those positions I am disposed to credit most, but, still I must confess that I cannot imagine what the white merchant’s object can be in purchasing this fish, or wher they dispose of it.    and on the other hand the Indians in this neighbourhood as well as the Skillutes have an abundance of dryed sammon which they take in the creeks and inlets, and I have never seen any of this pounded fish in their lodges, which I pesume would have been the case if they purchase this pounded fish for their own consumption.    the Indians who prepared this dryed and pounded fish, informed us that it was to trade with the whites, and shewed us many articles of European manufacture which they obtained for it.    it is true they obtain those articles principally for their fish but they trade with the Skillutes for them and not immediately with the whites; the intermediates merchants and carryers, the Skillutes, may possibly consume a part of this fish themselves and dispose of the ballance of it the natives of the sea coast, and from them obtain such articles as they again trade with the whites.

Actually, he still doesn’t really get it. But his current neighbors, no doubt exasperated with his stupid questions, have at last come up with an answer that will shut him up.

It is a bit hard to see why he has so much trouble comprehending the trade in fish. As L&C could easily see, they were abundant and easily caught at both sites. The product is easily dried or smoked.  It occurred to the locals to stock up and trade the commodity in all directions, as surely as it would occur to Sam Walton. I think one sticking point is that he doesn’t understand the secondary trade, in which near neighbors acquired the fish and in turn traded it further inland and further from the river. The commodity at this point is simply wealth, currency, but he keeps looking for those fish and can’t seem to find them. If I get some money for doing a job, he won’t find the money at my house, I do other things with it.

    The weekend is slipping away.

What is your favorite cookbook? A cookbook my aunt put together of my paternal grandmother’s old recipes.

What is the best recipe in it? Hard to choose… There’s a hashbrown casserole recipe in there that’s most awesome. Also a couple soup recipes that are favorites.

If you could only watch one TV channel, what would it be? MSNBC. How predictable am I?

Do you collect anything (besides dust)? Cats! Okay not really, though I do have several. I used to collect unicorns, but I’m not much of a collector now that I’m gettin’ old.

    Mac or PC? PC!

What is your perfect outdoor temperature range? 68 – 74 is peeeeeeeeerfect.

On a scale of 1 – 10, with 10 being the highest, what is your skill level with programmable electronic devices? Oh lord. Uh, 2 or 3? I’m ashamed to say that because I think everyone under the age of 30 is supposed to be able to work all the fancy newfangled gadgets. Not so much here.

  4. Penguin Awareness Day!!!

My computer hates having all these programs open so I am going to have to finish up my accounting work before I can re-visit the F Bomb for a complete reading.

Ha! The second part is definitely true:

Most homophobes are secretly gay. However, most arachnophobes are not secretly spiders.

       – God (@TheTweetOfGod) January 19, 2013

Never having been a homophobe, I can’t speak to the first.

If my computer refuses to reboot, have a great day all y’alls!!

What is your favorite cookbook? I use the internet mostly these days, but for actual cookbooks I seem to refer either to the America’s Test Kitchen book or one called “The American Century Cookbook” which is a history of American food and contains lots of classic recipes (including all the “ones on the box”).

What is the best recipe in it? That would be hard to say, not having made all of them. The ATK one has the best scalloped potatoes I’ve ever made, even better than the Bon Appetit 3 cheese version.

If you could only watch one TV channel, what would it be? Turner Classics. I’d miss all my contemporary shows, but I’d never be bored.

Do you collect anything (besides dust)? Mac or PC? I used to collect vintage dishware, but I ran out of room, and lately have lost interest. I collect books, but not in the book collector sense, just in the “they’re crowding me out of my house” sense.

What is your perfect outdoor temperature range? The lowest would be 20s, the highest is low 80s.

On a scale of 1 – 10, with 10 being the highest, what is your skill level with programmable electronic devices? Probably 2, and getting worse all the time.

  6. Moozmuse

The questions are not too good for me today:

What is your favorite cookbook? Improvisation

What is the best recipe in it? leftovers surprise (with fresh garlic, dried red chilies, cumin)

If you could only watch one TV channel, what would it be? I got rid of my TV along with the Italian boyfriend 17 years ago, never missed either one…

Do you collect anything (besides dust)? Books.

Mac or PC? Apple products are too expensive here. PC it is.

What is your perfect outdoor temperature range? Hot

On a scale of 1 – 10, with 10 being the highest, what is your skill level with programmable electronic devices? -10

Twitter Stream: #xl8 – everything to do with language and my profession, very interesting stuff

Music: eclectic, from jazz to Bob Dylan, blues, rock, 60s folk, classical

Good morning everyone……It’s 27° in Bellingham this morning, but the fog is finally lifting. Now to wake up and get my busy day underway. I’ll be installing the newly cleaned and altered curtains from my sons old house on the windows in his new house today. Last time the professional drapery installer I worked with did this part…now it’s me and my sons who think beer and a bbque are equally important….wish me well!

  8. My problem is I have so few answers, as a rule…

What is your favorite cookbook? The Intertoobs, and blind chance.

What is the best recipe in it? The application of maple syrup in unexpected places (like maple/soy glaze for venison)

If you could only watch one TV channel, what would it be? Comedy Central

Do you collect anything (besides dust)? Irish Coffees.

Mac or PC? PC. Mac is an evil conspiracy to frustrate the masses into submission (below).

What is your perfect outdoor temperature range? All of the above. Below -25C gets too nippy and much above 100F without some water to fall in can be problematic.

On a scale of 1 – 10, with 10 being the highest, what is your skill level with programmable electronic devices? 10, though please don’t ask me to fix yours.

Twitter Stream: cybersecurity for industrial applications (though I am not hip enough to really use the tool like a Millenial).

Music: All of the above. During the Lodge Years I setup a computer for guests to dump their CD collections, resulting in a few tens of thousands of pieces which cross all genres. I play on random most of the time. Background is Classic Rock, so I return to that often, but Mozart cranked really loud is the same thing.

  9. slksfca

…in my mom’s old Betty Crocker cookbook that was a wedding present in 1953. Chewy goodness with a delicate glossy crust on top. Yum!

  10. DavidW

Gorgeous out today. 77 right now… about to head out and enjoy the day.

What is your favorite cookbook? Maeda Heatter’s Book of Great Chocolate Desserts

What is the best recipe in it? Palm Beach Brownies (without a doubt)

If you could only watch one TV channel, what would it be? Comedy Central

Do you collect anything (besides dust)? Whippet statues

    Mac or PC? PC

What is your perfect outdoor temperature range? 80

On a scale of 1 – 10, with 10 being the highest, what is your skill level with programmable electronic devices? 6 average with a +1 for determination

  11. Moozmuse

on the front page just get endlessly long? Or is someone hacking in to spy on Moose comments? Scary…

Ok, who is screwing around with the technology here?

  12. slksfca

But now I have no room for anything in the apartment that isn’t already here. That’s why I’ve had to forbid myself from checking out yard sales etc. I do love my old stuff, though. Some of my most treasured things – like my 1934 Philco floor radio – were purchased as long ago as the early ’70s, when I was in high school. 🙂

This morning I wanted to take myself out for breakfast, but it’s Sunday and the weather is good, so all the places will be too crowded. So I’ll content msyelf with walking down the street for a double latte and lemon-poppyseed muffin in a little bit.

  13. slksfca

Just got an email notification that another deluded fool has subscribed to my YouTube channel. Every time this happens I scratch my head, because I’ve posted very few videos, most of which are not very original in content; and I last posted one ages and ages ago (I’ve used it mostly as a tool for diary content).

The only thing that saves me from feeling really bad for these people is that I’m not cluttering up their subscription feeds with new content of dubious value, LOL!

    The interrogation continues:

What is your favorite cookbook? Being left-brained, I gotta go with anything by Alton Brown. But I lust after Nathan Myhrvold’s Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking: $625.00!!!!

If you could only watch one TV channel, what would it be? ESPN. Sports and TV (and beer) were made for each other.

Do you collect anything (besides dust)? Nothing yet due to my peripatetic ways. But now that I am settling down, I am going to collect anything Art Deco (30’s streamline style).

Mac or PC? PC, mainly for professional reasons. I find the PC/Mac-MS/Linux Wars quite boring.

What is your perfect outdoor temperature range? 75-85. August in Seattle.

On a scale of 1 – 10, with 10 being the highest, what is your skill level with programmable electronic devices? 9. I’m a computer programmer/administrator and build my own PCs, next project is an HTPC. (Blasky is a 10, so ask him to fix your PC)

Music? As an early Boomer, Rock of course, leaning towards R&B. Got into K-Pop before PSY.

  15. slksfca

…to rustle up something for breakfast. I ended up with frozen breakfast links and blueberry muffins from the grocery store because all the diners were packed to the doors.

Also packed to the doors – and onto the sidewalk – was the neighborhood sports bar. Had to muscle my way through a group of guys (and some gals) sporting Niners red-and-gold. They looked like they were all having fun, but of course that will change if the local gladiators don’t do well on the field.

Me, I’m more “gladiolus” than “gladiator” so I’ll stay quietly at home and wait for Downton Abbey to grace my TV screen tonight. 🙂

  16. raina

I have so many cookbooks, I’m not sure I have a favorite. For recipes, I use the Internet often, actually.

Favorite recipe from an actual cookbook would be Chicken Vegetable Pot Pie from an old Southern Living. It’s made in a 13×9 pan, and everyone loves it. It’s also the only pie crust I can get right.

If you could only watch one TV channel, what would it be? Toughie, prolly the History Channel. I lurve HOw the Earth Was Made.

I collect cookbooks. LOL. They make great reading when they’re full of background history and stuff.

Mac or PC? I own a PC, but I really have no feelings per se one way or the other.

For working outside, better not be hotter than 65. For swimming, 80 or more.

If I ever bothered to read the instructions, prolly around 7, but I don’t and mostly rely on quesswork, so prolly 2.

  17. kirbybruno

What is your favorite cookbook? I have soooo many favorites! I love the Cooking Light annual books, because once the new one comes out I can give all my Cooking Light magazines to friends.

What is the best recipe in it? You are testing me here! There is a delicious grilled shrimp with mango salsa in on of them that is amazing.

If you could only watch one TV channel, what would it be? Bravo, I love my Top Chef!

Do you collect anything (besides dust)? Cookbooks!!

    Mac or PC? Have-PC  Want-Mac

What is your perfect outdoor temperature range? 80-85

On a scale of 1 – 10, with 10 being the highest, what is your skill level with programmable electronic devices? 9
