An utterly amazing five minutes of slice and dice, and not from the usual cast of Democratic characters. Note how Donna wisely sits back and basks in the conservative outrage.
I believe what we have happening is a new Big Lifeboat Party as the economic tsunami threatens to swamp all boats and even the George Wills of the world don’t want a mad man at the helm.
“the spector of Herbert Hoover comes out to haunt them”
An excellent observation by Cokie Roberts that no matter how old or young you are, or how rich or poor, you don’t want to wake up a year from now eating lard and onion sandwiches and walking three miles uphill both ways back and forth to school.
“who, as usual, substituting vehemence for coherence”
Oh, that somehow this George Wills’ quote would fit neatly onto a tee shirt. Key in this quote? “as usual.” Thanks, George. Thanks for not only boiling down the essence of McCain, but shifting the perspective on his POW status. Those years in Hanoi earned John McCain our respect, our concern and as comfortable a retirement as the nation can give him — but not the presidency.
“unpresidential behavior by a presidential aspirant”
I think Wills and the rest of us will be waiting indefinitely for McCain to start acting presidential and stop acting like an angry self-entitled one trick pony desperately in need of an SSRI and some dental work. And that goes double for Sarah Palin, my friends.
“the question of age is back on the table”
Sam Donaldson seems determined to run with this and good for him. And how stunning a demand coming from someone old enough to wear a hairpiece that screams “I’m really really old too.”
“if you’re running as a man who is above all else a leader, populism is always pandering and pandering is the reverse of leadership.”
Ah, George, if I was only twenty years older. Good for Obama that he has been running as a populist thrust into leadership from day one. Not so good for The Maverick who can’t seem to either connect or lead.
“John McCain showed his personality this week and it made some of us fearful.”
Amen.
If the circumstances weren’t so downright terrifying, this would be big fun to sit back and watch. It appears now the well-heeled conservatives may be stampeding to Obama as financial capital talks and rhetorical bullshit walks. Even the “Bush base” has alot to lose in a McCain/Palin administration as the one thing Wall Street likes less than regulation, higher taxes and entitlement programs is unpredictability.
I think, at the end of the day, the Palin/McCain ticket will be winnowed down to racists, functional illiterates and those anxiously awaiting Armageddon. That can’t possibly be more than 45% of the general electorate.
Here’s hoping. Rage on, George Wills. Rage on.
