Oh Good, Still Allowed to Exist!

Just caught the following transcript, and felt like hitting something. Apparently Republican Senator John Goebbels Eichelberger thinks society is doing gays a pretty good turn by “allowing them to exist.”

Transcript from the relevant part of the debate:

Leach: How would he [Eichelberger] want to encourage stability in gay couples?

Eichelberger: I wouldn’t.  I mean they can practice whatever sexual activity they like to practice, but there’s no reason to give them special consideration.  We don’t give them special consideration in Pennsylvania for any reason.  Why in the world would we allow them to marry?

Leach:  How would he want to encourage stability in gay couples?

Eichelberger:  There is no reason to encourage that type of behavior in Pennsylvania.

Eichelberger:  That comes back to the definition of family and that’s where we differ.  We can call all kinds of things families.  I mean, we can say a 3 party marriage is a family, or 7 or 8 people or marrying younger and younger children these days .

Host:  Are you saying that by their very nature homosexual relationships are dysfunctional?

Eichelberger:  [Pause] Ummmm.  I guess I would say that.  I would say that.

Eichelberger:  This changes the definition of marriage, allowing same-sex, and then like I said, 5-10 years from now it’ll be polygamy, marrying younger people, it’ll be whatever…It won’t be a 6 year old, it’ll be a 15 year old, then it’ll be a 14 year old, then it’ll be a 13 year old.

Leach:  Should our only policy towards [same-sex] couples be one of punishment, to somehow prove that they’ve done something wrong?

Eichelberger: They’re not being punished. We’re allowing them to exist, and do what every American can do.  We’re just not rewarding them with any special designation.

Joseph Eichelberger here has been fighting gay rights in Pennsylvania, even introducing a marriage ban back in March. Please sign the petition to be sent to Senator Fuckface Eichelberger.

Text of the petition:

I am appalled at your statement on WHYY on Friday, June 19 that you are “allowing” LGBT people to exist.

No one “allows” lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered or transsexual people to exist. No one “allows” straight people or white people or black people or Latinos or Asians or Jews or Christians or people with disabilities to exist.

No one in the United States has the power over anyone else’s existence.

Your statement belies the bigotry behind your attempt to ban marriage equality in Pennsylvania.

I demand that you apologize to all LGBT people and all of the people of Pennsylvania for your insensitive remarks.

Or gay soldiers might get thrown out of the military!

Or the Justice Department might compare gay relationships to pedophilia!

Or the government might defend DOMA by arguing that gays can marry the opposite sex to get equality!

Thank God for the Democratic Party!

Gays cannot do what every American can do, dumbass (Eichelberger), they cannot get married in most states.

You can have an IQ of 50, believe the world is 5000 years old, wear white hoods, pick your ass and still vote.

We need to keep spending money on education.

  4. I am firmly committed to repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. To that end, I am working closely with Congressman Murphy and Senator Kennedy’s offices to develop support for repeal legislation and will be among the original co-sponsors of the bill when it’s introduced. In the weeks and months ahead, I plan to work with Lt. Choi to repair the damage that has been done to his career and spare thousands of innocent, brave men and women, from the same injustice.

  5. New York Times article: “New Protections for Transgender Federal Workers

    By JIM RUTENBERG

    Published: June 23, 2009

WASHINGTON – Lawyers for President Obama are quietly drafting first-of-their kind guidelines barring workplace discrimination against transgender federal employees, officials said Tuesday.

The guidelines will be in an updated federal handbook for managers and supervisors to be distributed and posted online in the next couple of months, and they could also be included in other materials for managers. They will list transgender people – those who identify their gender differently from the information on their birth certificates – as among several groups protected by antidiscrimination laws.

Though transgender men and women are not believed to make up more than a fraction of a percent of the federal work force, their inclusion in the discrimination guidelines is seen as a breakthrough by transgender and gay rights advocates.

“The president is making a very clear statement that transgender people won’t be discriminated against,” said Mara Keisling, the executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, a group that has been talking with the White House about the new provisions.
