Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind.

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

The morning check-in is an open thread and general social hour.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

59 degrees this morning, headed for a thunderstormy 78. I’m hoping to.get at least a 10 mile hike in before that happens.

I’m on vacation for a week! Woohoo!!

  2. It is 60 degrees here with an expected high of 78 degrees … mostly sunny.

Scanning the election news, it appears that the tea party insurgence THIS WEEK has been slowed down by the not-as-insane-but-still-despicable traditional Republicans. When the GOP is bragging that Thom Tillis, author of North Carolina’s return to the 13th century, is the face of moderation … or that nominating Jack Kingston (“Why don’t you have the kids pay a dime, pay a nickel to instill in them that there is, in fact, no such thing as a free lunch?” Kingston said, adding, “Or maybe sweep the floor of the cafeteria.”) in Georgia puts a “new face” on their party, they are seriously deluded. They are still mean and 2014 is the year that mean is rejected at the polls.

Speaking of mean, I will echo Josh Marshal: WTF??:

… the House GOP agriculture bill [takes] a small program intended provide meals to children in the school lunch program during the summer months and says it can now only be used to benefit kids in “rural areas”.

… the bill language specifies that only rural areas are to benefit in the future from funding requested by the administration this year to continue a modest summer demonstration program to help children from low-income households – both urban and rural – during those months when school meals are not available.

And what’s this, coming from Missouri, the Show Mean State??? This is downright compassionate:

Low-income people in Missouri with drug felony convictions on their records have been banned from receiving food stamps under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) since the late 1990s. But barring a surprise veto from Gov. Jay Nixon (D), that lifetime ban for drug crimes will be lifted under a bill that passed the state legislature on Thursday.

Missouri is one of just nine states that still imposes a lifetime food stamps ban on anyone convicted of a drug felony. The bans were imposed as part of welfare reform under President Clinton*, but over the 18 years since they have been repealed in 16 states and modified in various ways by another 25. The bill Missouri lawmakers passed last week would retain a one-year waiting period following a drug felon’s release from custody, and a third drug felony conviction would still trigger a lifetime ban. But those convicted of one or two drug felonies would be able to get food stamps after a year provided that they adhere to court orders regarding drug treatment programs.

The bill passed by overwhelming margins: 27-3 in the state Senate and 122-19 in the lower chamber.

The only thing I can figure out is that someone told them it meant something else. Or was there federal money involved?

p.s. *THIS is what happens when Democrats govern to win Republican votes instead of governing from caring about people. Bill Clinton’s welfare “reform” may have triangulated some votes for him and the DLC policies he supported but the effects were a disaster for individuals.

Have a great day, all y’all. Still draining the swamp here.

things look OK. Guess I should bring an umbrella in case “they” are right. Hope it’s a good day for all the residents of Moosylvania!

About 62 F. here, with the probability of “experiencing a rain event in the mid-afternoon hour.” (When is that? Three p.m.?)

Would like to come back later today and read the front page posts. In the meantime, Mommy is dressing Miss Pink Cheeks. I’ll drive MPC to day care, then come home and start getting ready for my lunch date. Lots of errands to do today.

Looking forward to the long weekend, during which I plan to do NOTHING except what I feel like doing, which is not a whole lot. Got to get back to writing–one  short story is half-written, two more on the boil, and then, oh, Goddess, a novel is coming out in June. DTP and I are still mulling over the cover.

Hope everyone will have a good day and, ah, stay dry.

Sleepy. Eating breakfast, drinking tea. Got a Dem club meeting tonight, should be flooded with City Council candidates — even though it’s May & the election is in November. Filing just opened, so people are having their kickoffs & stuff.

I’m having a “be careful what you wish for morning”. I’ve been mostly in the garden for the last two days and my knees are complaining…..pesky arthritis!I have more planting to do today, so I may just use frozen packs for knee pads.

summer hot yet.  My PV recording system still has a glitch in it.  It’s making electricity like it should, but the tracking system is totally wacko (went from once a week not recording anything at all to saying I’ve produced 38.0 MWh which is ridiculous).  The installer promises it will be fixed – a working tracking system is part of the package I paid for.  Almost got my summer payroll done – the last person’s stuff is a combination of teaching and research on 3 different grant/awards so has to be entered in multiple steps, each step having to go through the approval chain before I can do the next one.  1 step down, 1 step in the approval chain, and 3 steps to go.  Sigh.  Cheers & {{{HUGS}}} to Moosylvania/Moosylvanians – the weeks is almost in sight. 🙂
