Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. Greetings from the frozen Northlands of Virginia, where we have decided to have actual winter here. Only in the late fall.

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

The morning check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

Headed for a high of 34. Which is 13 degrees warmer than it’s supposed to get tomorrow. For here, that’s some serious brrrrrrrrrrrr.

I read somewhere that 66% of the US landmass had snow as of Monday evening, a record for this date. We got snow again yesterday – only 3 or so inches but it came down FAST. So snow, followed by ice, followed by snow, followed by slight melt, followed by hard refreeze. The idiots will find ALL the ditches this morning.

  2. 13 degrees here on its way down to -2 (we hit zero at 6pm). Snow showers off and on all day.

Here is the NOAA snow cover map from yesterday:

I wonder what kind of microclimate makes that small green patch in the eastern part of Washington. Maybe princesspat or RonK can tell us.

It’s 6:36 and here I am, coffee half consumed, second morning in a row I’ve woken up early. Two days on Adderall, two nights of blissful, restful sleep plus an extra hour or two of quality time for this morning person. #Thingsthatmakeyougohmmm

Went thru all sorts of gyrations to speed up the ol’ computer yesterday and now it’s slower than ever. Uh-oh, it just refused to open MS-Word. As in Not Responding, Close Program.

Computers are like a bad marriage, can’t quit because necessary for survival and sometimes kind of fun.

I guess I shouldn’t grumble since this weather is good for our local ski resorts.  And this isn’t really cold compared to Jan’s weather.

Wingnut Cuban-Americans still frothing about the O-man handshake with Castro.

    Oh well.

37 heading somewhere. I see that Dem senators are thinking of adding more sanctions to Iran. Guess that bomb, bomb, bomb virus has hit them. Have written my two senators on this but Schumer is not responsive on this issue. Nor is Gillibrand. I’ve always had hawkish senators.

energy to follow the events in the Ukraine. There is a series in the NYTimes on a homeless child, Dasani, that has taken up all of my heart. I would post the links but the Times has a paywall. The thought that this stifling of young dreams takes place in the shadow of Wall Street has put me in a very bad mood.  Of course, the right wing press has a response.

Ok, this “winter” thing has got to go. We’re getting February weather & it’s only December. I live in Texas because I don’t like winter. We’ve had (I think they said) 5 days in a row where it didn’t get above 50, which is a record — and 4 out of the last 5 nights it has frozen. Frozen. In December, in Texas. Bigtime lotion on the hands & nose – did I mention I’m already getting nosebleeds & sore spots? Ugh, winter.

Today’s the book/crafts/bake sale that we had to delay from last Friday. It benefits our Christmas families. There’s also a raffle for gift baskets — my division put together a chocolate basket, which I was going to buy all my tickets for, but then someone put a hand-knit E.T. in the movie basket — with a special edition of the dvd…… So I guess I’m buying more raffle tickets than planned.

Anyway, I’m eating my healthy breakfast & drinking my tea, before going somewhat less healthy later today.

33 F.  I don’t like driving on icy roads, having had far too many fender-benders in my less than illustrious driving career, so Dearly Beloved is taking the dog to the vet for his checkup. Earlier he brought Miss Pink Cheeks over here for breakfast and will drive her to day care when he returns from the dog hospital.

The coffee is brewing, the sun is shining, the Christmas cards are nearly finished–all is well in this little corner of the world.

Hope everyone will be safe and warm today!

Good morning…..I’m cozy and sleepy this morning. Both grand girls will be with us this afternoon so I need to sew this morning and then tuck it all away so Santa/Grammie’s sewing room can be their art studio. It’s cozy with my sentimental tree and the electric “fireplace”.

still slippery as greased snot.  It would almost be safer to walk in the streets.  Almost.  I may (or of course may not) be able to get back onto the stuff I was working on when they shut us down last Thursday – if the various Chairs and other Powers That Be will quit inventing emergencies for me to deal with.  (“Your lack of foresight does not make my emergency” only works if you have the power to say so.  Secretaries do not have that power.)  Stay safe and warm guys and here’s a

    for Nurse Kelley (and anyone else who needs it) to help with pain alleviation.  {{{HUGS}}}
