Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. At least it’s Wednesday morning where I am as I post this. Hopefully you’re asleep and it’s real Wednesday morning by the time you read it.

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

The morning check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

Headed down to 57 before climbing again to 84 in a last gasp of Summer. Gonna post this and toddle back to bed for another try at that elusive ‘sleep’ thing.

Guess what day it is Meeses. Guess.What.Day.It.Is!

    Happy Humpday!

  2. It is 52 degrees in Madison WI on its way up to 78 degrees. Tomorrow a front moves through which will bring rain and then more seasonal temperatures starting on Saturday. High of 53 on Sunday with an overnight low of 38. Time to get the rain barrels winterized.

“Normal” high temperature for today is 65 degrees.

The check-in was posted on Wednesday your time … I am just glad I was not around at “Tue Oct 01, 2013 at 23:52:28 PM CDT” to see it or my head might have asploded. 🙂

I am going to try to put together a quick compilation of links on the two big news stories running now, the shutdown and the health insurance marketplace rollout, and post something. It won’t be pretty but it will be functional … kinda like me!!

    See all y’alls later.

In case you were wondering – the Statue of Liberty is closed.

What a fitting symbol for the patriotism of the Teahadists.

up to 83 and, as Denise pointed out, the Statue in the harbor is closed. Feel I am a punching  bag….food stamps, the sequester (which in all the latest news I keep forgetting), the shutdown, the coming debt ceiling fights. What next? Hope it’s a good day for all across our continent and beyond the seas.

Looking forward to next week, formulating a loose plan: stay in bed till 7 (Maybe toward the end of the week, that will be “sleep in till 7”), ride my bike from 9-11 and swim 2-3. Still leaves plenty of time for playing in the intertubez & for getting stuff done. And I should be plenty tired at night, so I should sleep well. Really looking forward to that part.

Meanwhile today in Austin – foggy & in the 70s. I brought my gym bag — gonna try to make the ab class after work. Or maybe the actual gym.

In our meeting yesterday, we talked about how the Library of Congress being shut down will affect our people. It really sucks because they just a week ago introduced the iPhone app for people using our service, and now because the LOC’s servers are down, no one can download books. Which is really bad because the blind & dyslexic school kids who we’ve been urging to use this won’t be able to download stuff they need for school. What’s really going to suck is in a week or so, people who get the recorded magazines mailed to them (internet use is still a minority in this country — and a tiny minority of elderly, especially disabled elderly) won’t get them, because of the shutdown. So – blind schoolkids & elderly people with macular degeneration who have nothing to do but listen to books (and who, because of the sequester were already getting less food from Meals on Wheels). Great. The audio books in our collection that we mail out are unaffected, because we’re state. But if I could ask the Repubs 1 question, it would be “why do you hate blind people?”

Some people like Indian summer, but I’m ready for cooler temperatures–crisp mornings and cool afternoons so I can use the slow cooker for dinner. Luckily, daughter-in-law is making stir-fry tonight.

She and I enjoyed a rare morning together shopping at Fair Oaks Mall yesterday. We came home with an armload of things for Miss Pink Cheeks.

I can’t believe the insanity of the Republicans!  This country is like a banana Republic now.  It’s worse than the Gilded Age. When will it end?

Hope everyone will have as good a day as possible, considering everything.

Another nice day with some scattered clouds.

Watched Poster Girl on Netflix yesterday. It is the story of Robynn Murray, who went from cheerleader and National Merit Scholar to Army Sergeant and machine gunner on a Humvee in Iraq. The movie documentary about her struggle with PTSD was nominated for an Academy Award. As a result, I have been in a pensive mood today. If you have not seen Poster Girl, suggest you try to see it.

hoping the front we’re expecting brings more rain and takes us back to Autumnal temps 🙂 – Hitting a wall in my on-going “going green” efforts.  My energy usage is so low (average monthly bill $30) I don’t quality for any programs to get it lower (and my single-household income is too high for any gummint programs as well) but I can’t afford to do much more than I’ve done – definitely can’t afford a PV system anyway.  I get my electricity from SWEPCO which might as well stand for South West Electric Power from Coal Only and they don’t have a “green option” like most of the municipal power sources do.  Sigh.  Oh well.  I’ll keep doing everything I can think of.

On another but sort of related note – I remember somebody talking about freezer applesauce and I’ve just fallen heir to a bunch of Arkansas Blacks.  How do I do the freezer applesauce?  Thanks & {{{HUGS}}}, bf

I’m prying my eyes open this morning, wishing coffee would be served but the only available server is still asleep so I’d best find my way downstairs and serve myself!
