AIDS Walk Austin – How your donations help & who you’ve helped

I don’t know if people know how easy it is to make a really big difference. Here’s some of the ways your donations help. And if that’s not enough to get you to visit my AIDS Walk Austin page, below the orange fleur de lis, I pull out the big guns — stories about the people who have been helped.

$35 covers one rapid HIV rest – we know that 40% of HIV+ people don’t know it yet. Through testing, we can get them into life saving care, and further reduce the spread of the virus.

$60 pays for a one month supply of medical prescriptions. Medications can reduce the virus so much that it keeps someone healthy and also reduces the risk of passing it along.

$120 provides education for 440 people. Education is one of the most important tools in reducing new infections.

$250 provides 3 family counseling sessions. It can be devastating for a family when a member is diagnosed, and we know that an intact family unit promotes health and provides a built in support.

$500 provides a month of rent for one family in supportive housing. Assistance with food, daily chores, trips to medical appointments and social support create a foundation for continued health and a step toward independence.

$1,000 gives 450 home cooked meals for hospice patients. When in hospice, there are often unique food needs. You can make sure that final days are spent with delicious food that doesn’t upset someone’s stomach.

So those are the wonderful things that your donations to AIDS Walk Austin can do. I know that cash is hard to come by these days & everyone is asking for some. Well, so am I. Please donate if you can, here’s my AIDS Walk Austin page.

It’s International Chocolate Day. Do you prefer American chocolate, or something more International? What is your favorite chocolate?

Do you defy superstitions by doing those things that the superstitions warn against (walking under ladders, etc.)?

Remembering that it’s Think Positive Day, would you let your kids take over the kitchen? Have you done so in the past? If so, are your kids good in the kitchen? (If your kids are grownups, maybe the question would work better for grandkids.)

Are you or any close to you celiacs? If so, have you found any good products or recipes that are as tasty as the gluten-filled things?

Here and Back Again

In spite of what my little brothers claim I am taller than a Hobbit. However like Bilbo Baggins I am going on an adventure. I am leaving tomorrow for San Francisco. I will be in California for a week and than head back by train to North Carolina. I will spend at least one day in San Francisco a city I love and miss.

As many of you know we lost my oldest brother last year. I had the horrifying duty of burying him, cleaning up his financial mess, and cleaning and putting our parent’s home up for sale. With the sale of the house one of my younger brothers has decided to move out here to North Carolina to be close to me. Reid has severe diabetes and M.S. I want him closer so I can keep an eye on him. I ended up doing all of the work to get movers etc. to get him out here. He does not have Internet access and I unfortunately am more than familiar with moving.

So I am taking off on my adventure tomorrow and hopefully I won’t encounter any trolls or dragons. Now if Vigo Morthensen’s Aragon wants to show up that is a different story. He is more than welcome.

I should be able to log on for Sunday All Day Brunch over at Street Prophets. I have diaries up for next week but probably won’t have Internet access on the train for next Thursday or the following Sunday.

I have an early flight tomorrow and will be in San Francisco early afternoon. A BART ride will take me to Concord where I’ll rent a car and go to my hotel. I’m not sure what day I’ll be in San Francisco but if anyone wants to meet up let me know. I’ll take BART into the city.

I’m looking forward to seeing my favorite city again and getting this hopefully last major project done of getting my brother moved. After that the only thing I want to look forward to is The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. I want no more crises. I want to spend the rest of my life geeking out.

Vlad the Implorer

Well, now we’ve seen it all. Vladimir Putin has an op-ed in the 11 September edition of the New York Times imploring Americans to undermine their own security by doubting the motives, credibility and policies of the US government:

The potential strike by the United States against Syria, despite strong opposition from many countries and major political and religious leaders, including the pope, will result in more innocent victims and escalation, potentially spreading the conflict far beyond Syria’s borders.

A strike would increase violence and unleash a new wave of terrorism. It could undermine multilateral efforts to resolve the Iranian nuclear problem and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and further destabilize the Middle East and North Africa. It could throw the entire system of international law and order out of balance.

Vladimir Putin – A Plea for Caution From Russia NYT 11 September 13

There you have it. It’s Obama versus the world and the Pope. With Vladimir Vladimirovich as the humble arbiter of peace and voice of sweet reason. Oh, brother! Pity “those still finding their way to democracy” if they wander into his neighbourhood.

Ironically, the powerful effect of this agitation and propaganda on the weak-minded comes at a time when many in the United States, especially among certain factions of the Left and the Right, are as vulnerable as mice; since domestic spying revelations have undermined the faith of Americans in their own government. You know, that Snowden guy who sought asylum recently in… uh, Russia… Hey, hang on a minute. Vladimir, it seems you are a very naughty boy.

President Obama Addresses the Nation in Prime Time on Syria

From the White House – President Obama Addresses the Nation on Syria

Just after 9:00 PM ET [on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013], President Obama delivered a national address from the East Room of the White House to discuss the situation in Syria. He explained why he has called for military strikes in response to the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons, laid out his reasons for asking Congress to authorize the use of force, and described how the threat of U.S. action has created the potential for a diplomatic breakthrough.

“Terrible things happen across the globe, and it is beyond our means to right every wrong,” the President said. “But when, with modest effort and risk, we can stop children from being gassed to death, and thereby make our own children safer over the long run, I believe we should act.”

Where were you when you heard about the planes hitting the towers?

How susceptible are you to link bait? Link bait is those links you find at the bottom or sides of some websites that try to lure you in with salacious headlines. (As an example, the site I am on now has “Senior Citizens Over 50 May Qualify to Get $20,500 this Year” and “Sandra Bullock’s Leather Outfit is Still Bringing the Heat” as examples. Wait – 50 is senior????)

Have you ever walked out of a movie before? Which one(s)?

It’s Make Your Bed Day. Do you make your bed every day?
