Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. Don’t forget to let your peeps know where to find you.

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

The morning check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

Headed for a high of 22. For some reason when I did my routine weather search this morning the universe decided I wanted Celsius. So I’m gonna go with it.

Everything sounds colder in Celsius, but it will feel brisk out.

  2. 59 degrees in Madison WI, on its way up to 82 degrees with a chance of isolated thunderstorms. Tomorrow it will get to 88 degrees then fall officially arrives.

Sunday, September 22, at 20:44 UTC is the autumnal equinox. That is 3:44pm in my time zone (what we call Real People’s Time). This year the autumnal equinox will be following closely on the heels of the Harvest Moon (tomorrow’s full moon, set to arrive at 6:13am Thursday morning but visible as the near full moon tonight if you are lucky enough to have no cloud cover).

Busy morning for me so I can’t stay. It appears that the House Republicans have bowed to the demands of Ted Cruz and will bundle the Continuing Resolution (CR) with defunding Obamacare. I guess every generation of Republican congresscritters needs to find out for themselves what “shutting down the government” really means (“hey what happens if we push the RED button??? Holy sh*t!!!”). Can’t be bothered looking WAY WAY back to 1995 … where they would also find that it led to them losing seats in the 1996 election.

Our magic number is 18 congressional seats. Between Obamacare Derangement Syndrome blinding them to the fact that Obamacare is going to be very popular with people (latest news: 6.4 million people will have health insurance premiums of $100 per month) and starving grandma and closing the parks and all the other things that shutting down the government will entail, they will be unlikely to recover electorally. Fingers and toes crossed. Ooops. Fingers uncrossed to prepare for phonebanking … toes uncrossed to get ready to canvass.

If there would not be serious human suffering caused by the government shutdown, I would say “go for it!!” with glee. As it is, I just hope that people are there to help those who depend on government income to survive.

in Moscow, After reading Jan’s comment just above, am wondering what kind of world are the Republicans and their supporters living in? It seems so harsh and brutal. All those people losing benefits, government shutdowns….

but it isn’t enough — the Barton Springs aquifer is predicted to go from “critical” drought to “exceptional” soon. I feel so bad for all the flooding in Colorado & Mexico. Especially Mexico, because if that storm had hit differently, their story would be different & we’d be getting the tropical rains that we really need.

I need my brain to stop waking me up to tell me stories. I’m supposed to be asleep for that, it’s called dreaming. I also need my digestive system to stop waking me up. Is this why senior citizens eat dinner at 4pm? So when you get awoken, it’s at least with enough time left to get back to sleep?

Going to Lowes after work today to get a towel rack. And weather stripping for my front door. My friend who knows how to fix things is going to put up curtain rods besides those 2 things. It’ll be good to not hang a towel on the doorknob to tuck in the gap in the side. Yes, I have tried replacing the weather stripping myself, no it didn’t work very well. And the curtain rods — everyone who knows me agrees that I should never be near a power tool, not ever.

So that’ll be my day: work, then a big box store. Earworm: Yahweh by my babies

Washington, DC area!  Yesterday was flawless, meteorologically speaking–never got up to 70 F. here during the day.  I wore a jacket to have lunch with JG in MD.  We had a wonderful time, talking nineteen to the dozen and discovering many common interests!  We both love mystery stories so now we’re exchanging names of writers.

In other news, we went to see the new house my son and his family (currently living with us) will move into at Halloween. The current owners are very nice–the lady gave us a tour of the house and expressed a desire for a granddaughter like ours.  Little Nora was very excited, throwing squeaky toys for the terrier to chase as we toured the rooms. The house is move-in ready, too.

Last night, despite a late dinner, I was very pleased to complete a small but vital section of my latest short story.  I’ll write the final scene today, then let it “cool” for a few days before I go back and reread it.  (One can always find something to change.) My next short story will be set in Mali, West Africa, of all places!  (One has to go where one’s imagination leads one.)

Hope everyone will have a good day today!

Those of us who live Here Near DC are not rich. In fact, relatively few are and they skew the statistics. Shutting down the government will cause widespread local misery to folks who don’t deserve it.

    Nice day, severe clear.

It was a tough night last night. Two years since I held her in my arms as she took her last breath. I posted a note here yesterday late, but not sure anyone saw it. Also posted in orange last night. I wasn’t going to write anything, but when you are a writer, it is hard to keep it inside when it wants to get out through the written word.

I still feel numb this morning.

A reflective morning for me……two years ago I was in surgery and my journey through BCH was underway. I’m grateful to have survived with my leg intact, I’m weary from a long two year recovery regime, I’m troubled by my difficulty accepting the reality of my limitations…..

However, I’m also looking forward to the going to the PT Pool this morning where I can safely exercise with a supportive group of people recovering from their own life changing challenges, and then to lunch with RonK, and then to the afternoon caring for our granddaughters.

Interesting how life does go on and how easily sorrow seems to overcome joy. Today I’m going to chose joy!

    I dodged over for a minute earlier and got caught by a FP diary.  Warmer today but still not out of the 80s.  They keep saying, “rain likely” which I will believe when it falls out of the sky and not before.  Hope everybody’s day is going well.  I’m assuming that since nobody has put out a call for help in any form that Kelley & Khloe survived the floods with no serious problem.  Somebody let me know if that assumption is wrong.  {{{HUGS}}}

A lot of small things have gone wrong today. Now I have a certified letter from the IRS. I think I’ll open it while I’m writing this.

I’ve been paying them $10-20/mo for a couple of years. I finished my 2011 taxes in July, now I’m starting on 2012. Full disclosure, I never made a formal payment arrangement, I just send checks, along with the payment tab from one of their bills. Let’s see what’s in the envelope.

They’re planning to seize my property unless I pay them $306.17. Oh wait… they say they’ll seize my state tax refund. But my income is so low I don’t even have to file a state tax return.

Did I mention that 100% of my tax liability is for Social Security and Medicare? It’s ~15% self-employment tax, for my small paychecks on a 1099. If I were feeling vexed, I’d call it a clawback.

The letter was obviously sent out by a computer but I suppose I’ll have to take the money out of my IRA and pay in full.
