On This Day
In 1846, poet Elizabeth Barrett eloped with Robert Browning. Her father disinherited her, as he did with any child who had the temerity to marry. She lived more or less happily ever after.
In 1940, in Lascaux, France, some ancient cave paintings were discovered in a cave by an exploring teenager.
In 1953, then-Congressman John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier got married.
In 1964, Canyonlands National Park was created in Utah. It ended up being smaller than it should be thanks to the political process (Republicans?) but there is still hope in some quarters that other portions of the canyon will be protected eventually.
In 1977, Steve Biko, a South African anti-apartheid activist, was killed while in police custody.
In 1994, an intoxicated man named Frank Eugene Corder stole a Cessna 150 and crashed it into the White House Lawn. He was killed in the crash. According to friends, the incident had nothing to do with any animosity towards then-President Clinton.
