On This Day

In 1846, poet Elizabeth Barrett eloped with Robert Browning. Her father disinherited her, as he did with any child who had the temerity to marry. She lived more or less happily ever after.

In 1940, in Lascaux, France, some ancient cave paintings were discovered in a cave by an exploring teenager.

In 1953, then-Congressman John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier got married.

In 1964, Canyonlands National Park was created in Utah. It ended up being smaller than it should be thanks to the political process (Republicans?) but there is still hope in some quarters that other portions of the canyon will be protected eventually.

In 1977, Steve Biko, a South African anti-apartheid activist, was killed while in police custody.

In 1994, an intoxicated man named Frank Eugene Corder stole a Cessna 150 and crashed it into the White House Lawn. He was killed in the crash. According to friends, the incident had nothing to do with any animosity towards then-President Clinton.

Still pre-coffee here. I was awakened 15 minutes before the alarm by the sound of Poppy barfing, so I got up to search for it, and never found anything. Either she did it someplace very concealed, or it was just dry heaves. At least I didn’t find it by stepping in it. That’s always fun.

I am not a video game player. I just never got into it, and the one time I tried, ages ago, I was handily beaten by a very young child.

I had a whole bunch of “fun” apps that I never used on a phone that mysteriously died and had not been backed up, so when I replaced that phone, I didn’t replace the apps. Everything I have now is either useful or social media. I have Twitterific and Echofon for Twitter, I have Photobucket and a couple of photo FX apps, 4 weather apps, one app for the local transit, Chrome, the NN app, a fitness app.

I’ve never done RPGs or cosplay.

I have never been to any Ren Faire. My sister was into it for a while, and she used to dress up, since she can sew anything, but was only a noble once. The reason there are so many peasants is because their clothes are much cooler, and Ren Faire is always in high summer.

I used to let my vet take care of disposal, but now I spring for cremation. I have 4 little cloth boxes, each with a tiny can inside that has the ashes of Quentin, Maude, Muffuletta, and Gris-Gris.

Thunderstorms, followed by a few days in the 70s!  Woo hoo!

Video games.  I don’t have the patience.  My #1 son, as a kid, played Super Mario Bros. over and over again until he was able to get through the levels and sublevels and win the game.  I’d start at level 1, get killed by the first or second hazard, and say, “Why bother?  Enough!”

I don’t have many apps that I downloaded myself.  I’ve got one that tells me the winning Powerball and Megamillions numbers.  And I’ve got FreeCell.

Nope, no role playing games.  That’s also a #1 son specialty.

The Ren Faire stuff makes me wince.  Creeps me out.

I’ve only had cats, so I’ve buried them all.  Not sure what I’d do with a bigger animal.

  3. Foolish us!!

We could have had a vice president who understood the threat of Russia from her days as governor of Alaska. You blew it, America.

Last night my Twitter stream asploded with news that Vladimir Putin had written an op-ed in the NY Times telling Americans to stop the wanton slaughter of innocents and warmongering over Syria. I did not read the op-ed, preferring to save my free clicks for useful information. This morning the email summary that the NY Times sends me had this headline: “As Obama Pauses Action, Putin Takes Center Stage “. So they create the news and report on the news as if it were “news”.

I think the Adeptu2’s Twitter response to Putin is also appropriate to send to the NY Times:

Do Scrabble, solitaire, pyramid mahJong count as video games? My solitaire count for one game is up to about 2000 with 80% wins.

Wii machete fight once. Loved it. My nieces and nephews enjoyed watching me parry and thrust as if I were fencing. Wd like to do it again, great exercise.

Ancient cellphone, not smart at all. No laptop or handheld devices.

Role play no, Ren Faire attended a couple of times long time ago.

Ummm, little box with Robin’s ashes is still in my closet from ten years or so ago.

Defenders Day in Maryland commemorates the Battle of Baltimore on September 12, 1814 following the burning of Washington. The successful defense of Fort McHenry led to the writing of The Star Spangled Banner, honored as Our Song, instead of America the Beautiful which deserves an Act of Congress to install as the U.S. National Anthem.

Oh, and Maryland license plates have actual bombs bursting in air on them. What were they thinking? Bombs? Really?

Do you play any video games? Which ones? Are you any good at them?  Heck yeah!  Then again, I’m a 30-something year old.  🙂  My grandparents gave my brother & I a Nintendo for Christmas when we were in the 9-ish range; Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Mario 3, and Techmo Superbowl were our favorites; I was good at all of them.  These days the computer has replaced the nintendo, but I still love games and am somewhat good at them.  Skyrim, Civ V, and XCOM are currently occupying my free time.

What about smart phone apps? What fun and/or useful apps do you have on your phone?  Errr.. I do have a smart phone.  Mostly the apps I use are “FuelLog” (tracking fuel mileage); “Out of Milk” for my shopping list, “Sound Hound” for figuring out what that song on the radio is, “Nest” for managing our house thermostat remotely, and at holiday time, “Gift List Manager”.  That’s pretty much it.  No games.  I’m sure I’m only using like 1/10th of its capabilities, but meh.

Have you ever engaged in role playing games? Cosplay?  I’m not familiar with the term “cosplay” and what it entails, but I still play D&D about once a month, and I used to LARP; haven’t in about a decade though.

Are you now or have you ever been a Ren Faire person? If so, did you ever dress up?  Never really been much of a Faire goer, actually; only went once, and not dressed up.

Pet owners: After you have bid farewell to a pet, do you let the vet take care of them, have them cremated, or bring them home and bury them? Or something else?  Haven’t had to deal with that yet.  Had pets as a kid, but my parents handled the after death issue.  I’ve got two cats now who are 11 1/2, so hopefully I won’t have to deal with that for a long time yet.

Love Tetris.  Was very very good at it.  My husband finds this amusing because I am not good at it in real life, at least when it comes to trying to fit the most amount of dishes into the dishwasher.  He’s the opposite – good at the real life applications, horrible at the video game.

Does FreeCell count as a video game?  I play that when I’m on hold for something I don’t dare hang up about.

    I don’t have a cell phone.

I was once a member of the SCA – persona 7th C. Irish – the garb was fairly simple (cotton instead of the truly period linen and wool because I couldn’t afford linen and wool).  As a member of the SCA I have attended Ren Faire in garb a couple of times but that was over 15 years ago.

My backyard garden currently has the mortal remains of 3 kittehs – Merlin, Scotty, and Aurora – and may it be many years before it gets another.
