Interrogatories

For National Vinyl Records Day, what is your preferred music medium? Vinyl, CD, digital…?

It’s International Youth Day. Are you the “get off my lawn” type, or do you tolerate or even enjoy the young (not counting the ones related to you)?

Did you ever read comics? If so, which ones? Do you still read them (or graphic novels)?

Do you play computer games? Which ones?

PLEASE Don’t Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

This week’s shot is from a couple of years ago at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone. Because I liked it. Not sure what that says about me…

Colonialism As Portrayed By the British Media

British news is quite influential in the United States, especially with respect to international affairs. British news about international affairs also quite naturally sometimes deals with India, which is a very important country internationally.

Something quite peculiar sometimes happens when the British press deals with India, however.

Odds & Ends: News/Humor

I post a weekly diary of historical notes, arts & science items, foreign news (often receiving little notice in the US) and whimsical pieces from the outside world that I often feature in “Cheers & Jeers”. For example …..

FATHER-SON? – rock musicians George Harrison and Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters).

Gothic Basin near Glacier Peak (photos)

The following pictures are from Gothic Basin yesterday. It’s a rough hike, in fact, a lot of it isn’t what most people would even call trail. It’s more like a rock garden. It’s steep and there are deathly sharp drops in a few places — drops that get pretty close to the trail. That said, there was an endless supply of ladies aged 60+ out there blowing everyone else’s doors off. You just have to be as tough as they are.

Or maybe it’s the view. This is a look across a canyon on the trail up to the basin.

Weekly Address: President Obama – A Better Bargain for Responsible Homeowners

BONUS VIDEO ADDED: Video of President Obama and the First Lady addressing injured veterans at the Disabled American Veterans National Convention below the fold (with transcript)

From the White House – Weekly Address

In this week’s address, President Obama says that the housing market is starting to heal, and now it’s time to build on that progress by creating a better bargain for responsible, middle class homeowners. The President announced steps he will take to strengthen the housing market, and now Congress must act to help make homeownership a source of pride and middle class security for generations to come.

How the Media Portrays Africa, China, and India Differently

By: inoljt, http://mypolitikal.com/

I recently had the pleasure of listening to a fascinating presentation in my Introduction to International Relations class. The professor showed the class pictures what one family in a variety of different countries ate during the duration of a week. The pictures came from the book Hungry Planet, by Peter Menzel. Time Magazine published a series of excerpts (part one and part two) of these pictures.

It was quite interesting to see the typical weekly meal of one family in several countries, ranging from Japan to Germany. The American photo, unfortunately, was the picture-perfect stereotype of over-consuming pre-prepared food (rather than real food).

There was something else that caught my eye, however, as the presentation went on.

Confessions of a Retail Worker: When poverty hits the fan.

Hello everyone,

Note: Retail breakrooms nowadays often have microwaves, which is a blessing, to be sure. But not of all them do. Nor do subtracted employees (cleaning crews, or temp staff) always have access to the “staff” break room either…

But anyway….

The economy is pretty bad out here these days. I am working all the hours I can get, and I am fortunate insofar as I do have access to kitchen facilities. But that’s not how I know….

You know that you work in the service or retail industry with desperate poverty all around you when your friends are excited about air dryers in the company bathroom.

Because they bring their food with them….

And carefully place their food under the air dryer, balancing carefully.

Because if the air dryer runs long enough, it will heat up the food. And thus, they will be able to eat at least one hot meal during their day.
