On This Day

In 1892, Thomas Edison patented a two-way telegraph. Had he lived long enough, I suspect he (rather than Al Gore) would have invented the Internet. 😉

In 1936, Jesse Owens pwned Hitler when he won his forth gold medal at the Olympics held in Berlin that year.

In 1944, Smokey the Bear made his debut, advertising for the U.S. Forest Service.

In 1945, the U.S. dropped their second atomic bomb, Fat Man, on Nagasaki in Japan.

In 1969, Charles Manson’s minions murdered Roman Polanski’s pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, along with three house guests and one unfortunate kid who happened to be visiting the caretaker.

In 1974, following Nixon’s resignation, Gerald Ford was sworn in as President of the United States. (Imagine if Agnew has still been Nixon’s VP! Ugh.)

In 2000, Barry Bonds, with some steroidal assistance, hit his 600th home run.

In 2010, Ted Stevens, former Senator from Alaska and famed explainer of the Internet, was killed in a plane crash in his home state.

National Women’s Day? Pah!! Every day is national women’s day … girlz rule. I see that it is also a hover theme. 🙂

The cat gets a pedestal? More fetishization? (Snort!!)

Is it a coincidence that Veep Day is also the day that Nixon resigned and his veep, Gerald Ford, became president? He was the last unelected president until George W. Bush was appointed to the presidency in 2000.

The White House has announced that the president will hold a press conference today at 3pm Eastern. Will he put Putin in his place? Liveblog after lunch.

  2. Gee

After returning to work for one triumphant day, I stayed home sick again today.  Gonna try to get a doc’s appt.  Temperature had the gall to return last night, and the cough remains extraordinary.

Do children and pets like you right away?

It’s National Rice Pudding Day, are you a fan?

Can you tie a windsor knot? Can you tie a bowtie?

Have you been to a live auction? A silent auction? Did you bid on anything? Did you win?

Have ever used eBay, for buying or selling?

    Yep.

    Don’t know.

    Yes.  No.

Yes.  Yes.  Yes.  I did win something at a silent auction once.

Bought a couple of things on eBay.

  3. Do children and pets like you right away?

Children usually yes, pets usually no. And it goes both ways – that’s how I feel about kids and pets.

It’s National Rice Pudding Day, are you a fan?

    Yes

Can you tie a windsor knot? Can you tie a bowtie?

A Windsor knot is just a usual tie, right? Or is it different? I can tie a tie, but not a bowtie and not any special ties.

Have you been to a live auction? A silent auction? Did you bid on anything? Did you win?

Multiple live and silent auctions for my kids’ schools. I’ve won some things.

Have ever used eBay, for buying or selling?

I haven’t but my wife has

They got Spiro neatly out of the way, didn’t they?  I’m going to have to go back and read up on that.  I can’t remember how long before Nixon’s resignation they dumped all those charges on Agnew.

Naturally, my neighborhood library branch is closed on Fridays. And I’m between fiction books — plenty of nonfiction, but I need a story.

I posted a video in yesterday’s F-bomb. I had a feeling all day I needed to visit, but it was crazy busy.

  7. Dogs: You love me, you feed me, you play with me. You must be God.

Cats: You love me, you feed me, you play with me. I must be God.

All cats have Asperger’s syndrome. All dogs have ADHD.

Do children and pets like you right away? Pets sort of, childen have the good sense to stay away.

It’s National Rice Pudding Day, are you a fan? Yes. And bread pudding and especially baked custard. Hmmm, Friday, the Pennsylvania market (open Weds-Sat only) has wondrous puddings. It’s calling me…

Can you tie a windsor knot? Can you tie a bowtie? No, never had the opportunity.

Have you been to a live auction? A silent auction? Did you bid on anything? Did you win? Yes, I’ve bought a lot of things at auction.

Have ever used eBay, for buying or selling? I sold books on eBay for years. Was glad when I quit. It was a lot of trouble even then when it was a lot simpler. You have to love it to do it at all.

…for the ones about attending a live or silent auction. However, eBay auctions are silent too (except for my whoop of joy when I win). I haven’t been on eBay in ages. Can’t think of anything I want that I have room for.

Children and pets all seem to like me. Once on the train from Chicago to New York a little girl seated right in front of me with her mother got up and plopped herself in the empty seat next to me. We chatted the whole rest of the trip, with occasional interjections from the mother who was repeatedly turning around in her seat with a horrified look at what her little daughter was saying to me. 🙂

And bowties! I love “real” bowties that aren’t pre-tied. I’ve got a decent collection of them from my days as a corporate wage slave.

Do children and pets like you right away?

Generally, yes. Though kids are now interested in a different way when they see me in my wheelchair. One little girl was so fascinated, she came up when I wasn’t looking and just barely touched my arm. 🙂

It’s National Rice Pudding Day, are you a fan?

Meh. Never have been a huge rice fan. Puddinged or not.

Can you tie a windsor knot? Can you tie a bowtie?

Yes and yes. I’m rusty, though. Especially on the bowtie. I’d probably have to look it up again.

Have you been to a live auction? A silent auction?

    Yup, live, but not silent.

Did you bid on anything? Did you win?

    Yes and yes.

Have ever used eBay, for buying or selling?

Oh, yes, It’s how we makes our moneys, preciousss.

    Q&A:

Do children and pets like you right away?   Generally.  I’m more a fan of pets than children though.

It’s National Rice Pudding Day, are you a fan?  Oh yes.  Especially my grandma’s Rice Pudding.

Can you tie a windsor knot? Can you tie a bowtie?  Nope

Have you been to a live auction? A silent auction? Did you bid on anything? Did you win?  Nope

Have ever used eBay, for buying or selling?  I’ve used it for buying, although not for many, many years; probably close to a decade ago.

  12. Weiner Mocks British Reporter’s Accent (VIDEO)

After exiting a Manhattan apartment building, Weiner was approached by the journalist, a reporter for British-ITV, who asked him if he was driven by a “hunger for the big job.” Weiner couldn’t contain his annoyance.

“It’s hard to take you seriously,” Weiner said before impersonating her accent.

I get the feeling he is just mailing it in now … not even trying to act like he has a snowballs chance in hell of getting the nod.
