Friday Coffee Hour and check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

  2. It is 64 degrees here in Madison WI with an expected high of 81 degrees.

Why am I telling you all this??!!?? You aren’t even here!! I hope you have fun in your meetings (is that a contradiction in terms?).

All I know is that I just got up (late) and I need moar coffee. The train that normally chugs through about a mile away issuing one plaintive wail of its horn must have had some kind of problem last night. I heard train brakes and the horn was blasting for about 15 minutes. Needless to say, I was wide awake by the time it stopped. Sleep was elusive.

Both yesterday and Wednesday were completely unproductive due to technical problems with my own infrastructure so I need to make up for lost time.

    Later!

Bad insomnia tonight, mind racing for some reason.

Yesterday I heard the rehearsal for the Outside Lands music festival wafting over from the park. It opens today and Paul McCartney will be headlining. So all weekend I get amplified music with throbbing bass seeping into my apartment. Oh well, it only happens once a year.

    A happy Friday to all!

Lavabit provided an encrypted email service. Snowden reportedly uses Lavabit’s email to communicate with others.

    My Fellow Users,

I have been forced to make a difficult decision: to become complicit in crimes against the American people or walk away from nearly ten years of hard work by shutting down Lavabit. After significant soul searching, I have decided to suspend operations. I wish that I could legally share with you the events that led to my decision. I cannot. I feel you deserve to know what’s going on–the first amendment is supposed to guarantee me the freedom to speak out in situations like this. Unfortunately, Congress has passed laws that say otherwise. As things currently stand, I cannot share my experiences over the last six weeks, even though I have twice made the appropriate requests.

What’s going to happen now? We’ve already started preparing the paperwork needed to continue to fight for the Constitution in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. A favorable decision would allow me resurrect Lavabit as an American company.

This experience has taught me one very important lesson: without congressional action or a strong judicial precedent, I would strongly recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States.

    Sincerely,

    Ladar Levison

    Owner and Operator,

It’s in the seventies, heading for the eighties with rain and thunder. Ugh.

I am leaving Wednesday for three and a half weeks and I have so much to do that I am frozen in inaction.

Hoping coffee will help. Have a good day, Meese!

maps are back out.  My town is right on the line of ok and abnormally dry.  Have a feeling that the swings of wet and dry will be the new ‘normal’.  Weekend starts at 3pm CDT!

so a heat advisory must mean something different than I think it does

Back to normal – eating breakfast, drinking tea, playing on the tubez. Leaving early today for a doctor appointment – just routine, my doc is retiring & handing off his practice to a new guy & he wants to meet people before he writes prescriptions. Seems reasonable. Anyway, that’ll be my day – work, doctor’s office. Depending on what time I get out, maybe swimming.

Son 3 came back from visiting his brother in CA at 1:30 am last night. We did not get home from Newark Airport until about 3. I am exhausted.

It is still summer here in North Texas but it is a Friday.

Hope everyone’s day goes well and quickly.

Tonight will be Vegetarian Night at our house, as we’re having a barbecue on our usual Vegetarian Night, which is Saturday. Can’t think what I’m going to cook though–wonder if I can sneak in a quick visit to Trader Joe’s to get something?

Went to the lab to get blood taken for tests, hope everything is all right.

Need to get cracking–lots to do before the guests arrive tomorrow at 4!

    Everyone have a good Friday!

Two more days of twice-daily visits to BIL’s house to take care of the cat. Bartholomew was recently diagnosed with kidney disease, and had lost weight due to that and age (vet guesses he’s 16-17). He’s picking up a bit now.

After that, we go off to the good farmers market to see if they have any berries for me to make more preserves. And then back here til we have to feed Sir Bart again.

    we need the rain but I hope it clears off soon as the market gardeners need to harvest for tomorrow’s Market (and I’d like to walk home dry shod) – but it would be totally fine if it started again tomorrow afternoon once the Market is closed.  Crazy day – somebody either did some weird ordering or our departmental credit card has been hacked.  I’m waiting to hear back from faculty – but I’m shutting the card down as of noon if I don’t get confirmation of the purchases.  Also an “outside reviewer” for a tenure-tract review didn’t get the packet that we were told not to copy before sending out…  We think we’ve gotten that dealt with.  We hope.  Secretary mostly dealt with that – stayed an hour longer than she meant to as she’s got to be in the neighboring county to play harp for her sister’s MIL’s funeral at 2.  And I thought I could enter GA tuition waivers today but that’s been put on hold pending a new position being created.  Hope MY day gets better and everybody else’s started better in the first place.  Have the good weekend.  {{{HUGS}}}
