  1. Have you ever been to Mexico? Where did you go, and what did you think? Would you go now, with all the troubles?

I have been a few times: To Acapulco and Mexico City long ago, to Tijuana about 20 years ago, to Baja California about 15 years ago, to Cancun 6 months or so ago. Parts of it are very nice, parts not so much so (sorta like every other country!) I wouldn’t go to the more troubled regions right now, but Cancun was fine (very touristy, but hey, we were tourists on vacation).

Have you ever seen a show at the Hollywood Bowl?

    No

Did you ever succumb to the lure of “designer” clothes?

No. Why should I pay extra money to advertise a product? They should pay me!

It’s World Population Day – where does overpopulation rank on your list of important issues?

Hard to say. It’s not something I base my vote on, for instance. But I support efforts for broader sex education, birth control, abortion rights etc. But I support them mostly because a) People should know about sex and b) Women should control their bodies and only slightly because of effects on world population.

Population control happens naturally when people (and especially women) become more educated and wealthier and when women (and to an extent men) get more control over pregnancy and birth, and when life expectancy increases.

Never been to Mexico.  It’s always struck me as a little scary.

Hollywood Bowl, no.  But now you’ve got that McCartney song stuck in my head.

I had one pair of Calvin Klein jeans.  No fancy pocket stitching or anything.

Population has been near the top of my list since I started thinking about “issues” in the ’60s.  The problem drives so many of the other problems in the world:  climate change, habitat destruction, and on and on.  I recently read an article, though, that said that world population will begin to decline during this century.  I’m not sure about the mechanism(s) behind that prediction or how painful the process might be.

Rep. Burgess (R-TX) again blocked light bulb standards. He fears they may involve rules against dim bulbs, which might force him 2 resign.

    – Kurt Eichenwald

First thing I thought of when I saw an article about this was “dim bulbs.”  (Well, I suppose everybody did.)

1882 – James Larkin White, miner, explorer, and park ranger, discovered the Carlsbad Caverns (d. 1946)

I’m thinking the discovery went something like this:  “Good grief!  Where are all those bats coming from??”

    As to the morning questions:

Have you ever been to Mexico? Where did you go, and what did you think? Yes, been to Nogales a few times. Of course, that was back when you could just walk across the border with a drivers license. Since I don’t have a passport, I reckon it’ll be a while before I exit the country again.

Would you go now, with all the troubles? Probably not, but it’s more the passport issue.

Have you ever seen a show at the Hollywood Bowl? No.

Did you ever succumb to the lure of “designer” clothes? Clothes? Not so much. But handbags, oh how I love thee. I prefer the ones that don’t blare the desisgner’s name; it should be subtle.

It’s World Population Day – where does overpopulation rank on your list of important issues? It’s not something I think deeply about, but there is some concern.

Feel kinda like I spent the night in the dryer with a bagful of hammers; last night was an RA fever night. I was bundled under three blankets with the heating pad, shivering. Glad that’s over.

Have you ever been to Mexico? Where did you go, and what did you think? Would you go now, with all the troubles?

We went when I was a kid, I had fun but I had fun all the time, I was a kid. And the youngest. I wouldn’t go now, not because of any troubles, but because I just don’t travel. I’m done.

Have you ever seen a show at the Hollywood Bowl? No,never been to Los Angeles other than the airport.

Did you ever succumb to the lure of “designer” clothes? When I was in high school, I had a brief fascination with Armani clothes, but I never bought any.

It’s World Population Day – where does overpopulation rank on your list of important issues? I think it’s important, but it’s one that could take care of itself if we’d do things like make sure girls get to go to school.

Lady Bird’s funeral procession — I remember going out to the Capitol grounds, there were so many of us lining 11th St & Congress Avenue. The daughters said it made them feel so much better, seeing all those people. She was, truly a great lady. Quite a businesswoman in a day when that was barely allowed, much less celebrated. And of course her environmental efforts – again a pioneer.

  7. Floja Roja

    It’s raining. Most unusual.

Have you ever been to Mexico? Where did you go, and what did you think? Would you go now, with all the troubles?

Why yes, I have. Tijuana, Rosarito, and Ensenada. While Ensenada was the “nicest,” I liked it least because it seemed to be populated mostly by obnoxious American frat boys. We used to drive, but all the trouble seems to be along the borders, so I would avoid doing that now.

Have you ever seen a show at the Hollywood Bowl?

The Kinks back in the early 80s, and I saw the Go-Go’s there (why does that apostrophe pain me now?) at a show that marked their transition from those chicks we all knew from the clubs to being actual stars. My friends The Plimsouls opened.

Did you ever succumb to the lure of “designer” clothes?

I bought designer stuff on occasion, but always removed the label. As plf said, I thought they should pay me for the free advertising space! Obviously I was only buying for fit and style, not the name of the the designer. I hate the term “designer” anyway. All consumer products are designed by someone, that doesn’t make any of them special.

It’s World Population Day – where does overpopulation rank on your list of important issues?

It’s way up there. Excess population puts a strain on everything. It’s been on a back burner because legislating any family’s personal decision is not do-able, and is the opposite of pro-choice. The solution is, again as plf said, education and increased wealth.

So the State says they can’t use Aggravated Battery when it results in death. Another reason not to listen to those cable news panels. LOL.

We went to Neuvo Laredo, Mexico, which is across the border from Laredo, TX a few years ago. We went in the summer and about 99% of the buildings had no a/c. They also charge for toilet paper. You pay for the tp before entering the stalls, and only a few squares. Not a place I would recommend. Next time, I’d like to go to Mexico City.

No to designer clothes but I finally bought Ascis sneakers the other day. The $60 price tag made me cringe but it was for medical reasons, and with the $10 cash coupon from Kohls, I can tell myself it was only $50.

I don’t give much thought to overpopulation.

  9. bfitzinAR

Mexico – when I visited Big Bend National Park I was rowed across the Rio Grande ($2 round trip) and wandered around a small town in Mexico (had lunch, didn’t drink the water LOL but had “Mexican Coke” before it became popular here).

Hollywood Bowl – nope.  Designer clothes – picked up a few at Good Will over the years.  Does SAS (San Antonio Shoe) count as “designer”?  Hard for me to get here as there’s no SAS store, but they fit my feet better than anything else.  $120-$150 the pair is why I only buy shoes every 5 years or so.

World population – is a problem, but mostly it’s a symptom of out-of-control power-over societies disrespect for women and the earth itself.

  10. Avilyn

Have you ever been to Mexico? Where did you go, and what did you think? Would you go now, with all the troubles?  Nope, and maybe, but just to buy really good tequila.

Have you ever seen a show at the Hollywood Bowl? Nope.

Did you ever succumb to the lure of “designer” clothes?  I buy New Balance Sneakers, if that counts?  You can’t really see the logo tho, because I buy all black sneakers.

It’s World Population Day – where does overpopulation rank on your list of important issues?  It’s one of the reasons Mr. A and I decided not to have kids.  (The other reasons being that we knew we didn’t have the temperament to be good parents, and kids tend to annoy us.  Seriously though, even if we thought we’d be excellent at it, we wouldn’t because there’s already too many people in the world.)

  11. This interchange occurred during the filming of Marathon Man with Dustin Hoffman, in which Olivier plays the sadistic dentist.

Hoffman, a method actor, would come in sleepless for 3 nights to “play the role”. Olivier did none of that. He told Hoffman

“My dear boy, why don’t you try acting?”
