Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. Don’t forget to let your peeps know where to find you.

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

The morning check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

WEDNESDAY NOTE:

The Moose will feature a liveblog of the final SCOTUS rulings for the 2012 session starting at about 9am Eastern time. Opinions on the DOMA and Prop 8 cases will be released.

Wendy Davis is my hero. Just sayin’

  2. 69 degrees here with thunderstorms. Expected high of 83 degrees.

I need to clear the deck for the SCOTUS rulings … so back to the grindstone.

    And congratulations, Texas! You Rock!!

a horrid 90. This has been a week filled with lots of news with more to come today. The Meese have been great and courteous about bringing it to us. Many thanks. Learned a lot!

thunderstorms in the forecast till Sunday.

Resting up from dentist visit yesterday and the shock to my system from SCOTUS – not that I was surprised but it’s pretty damn depressing to have a Klan Court (our side not included)

  5. I finally see my Doctor this afternoon and am really nervous. Still nauseous. Still having problems eating. At least I can go back onto the antihistamines after this appointment is over. In the meantime hoping to get some energy back. I would love to be as energetic as this little fellow in Wanna Race.

areas got 6 inches of rain last night, with more coming down.  Flash flooding and flooding going on in many areas.  The Wapsi is the one affected the most this time.

Have a feeling the voter ID’s will be coming here as well.  With a state that is still 90% white, I don’t get what their problem is!

We had thunder last night but nothing else.  Thunderstorms are in the forecast for the rest of the week.

Had trouble with Motley Moose yesterday!  It wouldn’t let me comment, claimed there was a “server error” the first time I tried to come in, etc., etc.  Hope this gets through.

Have been GLUED to the Internet, not paying attention to exercise or anything else!  How about those Texas women, eh?  I was born in Texas and still try to visit relatives there once a year. What with Texas, SCOTUS, and Snowden, my head is spinning.

Wendy Davis is my hera. My 19-year-old politically active granddaughter was in the Texas State Capitol doing Facebook updates as events progressed. How about the Republicans altering the clock on the vote?  Do they not know about screenshots?  They behave as if they’ve never heard of the Internet!

Was very disappointed in the SCOTUS ruling yesterday. I suppose if you’re a rich Republican male who lives in a bubble of deference you don’t notice racism. Or sexism. Or any other “ism.” We have to find a way around this–for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

I’m tired as I stayed up and watched theTX shenanagins last night.

    Hot, humid and stormy here.

Hubby is off today.  Lots of house stuff and kid playing on tap for today.

we hit 105 yesterday and today are forecast for 106. Once it gets over 100 you really can’t tell any difference though. At long last I have a dr.’s appointment this afternoon with a new dr., here’s hoping there will be some progress made. This has been very discouraging. Most of the time I really like living out here but then I’ve been really healthy until now so didn’t notice the state of medicine out here.

Stayed up too late watching the shenanigans. I recorded the last bit, so I can watch it again. Pretty amazed that we got even a temporary victory. Perry will call a special session, he has to. But these past few days have been amazing to be a Texas Democrat. Tears in my eyes proud of Senators Davis (of course), Zaffirini (how loud does a woman have to speak to be heard over her male colleagues?), Watson (thanks for helping run out the clock, Kirk – you get a big hug next time I see you!), and Van de Pute — who had to leave her father’s funeral because of this crap. But — national & even international attention. Shouts from Nancy Pelosi & the President. I am one proud Texan.

I can’t do tonight’s workout, it’s an open water swim. Dermatologist’s eyebrows went way up when I said “swim in Decker lake”. But I brought workout clothes to change in to & I’ll go out there & assist or cheer or whatever. If I can stay awake, I did that awake/doze thing for the last hour or so of my already short night.

    Anyway – yay Texas!

but this is the Tweet Of The Day:

Ana Marie Cox ‏@anamariecox Instead of buying pink running shoes, I’m going to donate the cost of them to @wendydavistexas’ campaign. $149.99

“Extended period of hot weather” heading our way next week.  I don’t deal well with heat physically, so I’ll be turning into pretty much a cave dweller for awhile.

Meanwhile, I don’t know how much rain fell yesterday, but it was way more than the 1/2″ predicted.  We experienced several clouldbursts, each of which appeared to drop more than an inch in very short order.

I was expecting the rain to lower our walk-in volume yesterday.  People are desperate enough that they braved the weather to get in.

One young family came in for gas money to get to what they hope are greener pastures.  I pray they are right.

Another was a woman who had to flee the temporary housing we had arranged for her because her abusive husband discovered her location.  She had spent the night hiding in a picnic shelter at a local park.  The local family violence shelter is full.  In a small city like this, it is difficult to stay under a stalker’s radar.  I stayed after hours to get her resettled and today we’re working with her worker at another agency to get a police report filed, and her petition for an order of protection expedited.

Domestic violence issues seem to be a larger proportion of my caseload here than in the bigger cities in which I’ve worked.  It may be a phenomenon of rural poverty.  I haven’t found any research to confirm or contradict that surmise on my part.  I am also seeing a much higher level of hard drug use than I expected.  Again, I don’t know whether that is a regional issue, or whether it’s on the rise everywhere.  I knew that meth was a problem in rural America, but I sure didn’t expect to be dealing with as many cases of heroin addiction as I’m seeing.

Most of our clients, though, are simply straight-up “working poor.”  Many not only have a job, but are holding down more than one.  The stereotype of the “lazy moocher” is easy to dispel by spending just a little time in my office.  We need to do a better job of public education on that, and the seemingly universally held myth that there’s still a comprehensive safety net in place.

Well, venting like this is getting my coffee drunk, or me any closer to getting out the door.

  13. We’re enjoying the sweet sounds of construction 3 houses away. And highway noise… It’s humid and everything is louder.

Humid, yes. We had less than an inch of rain last night. Parts north of us (and of nchristine) got 6 inches and more.

At 3:00 am, the tornado sirens went off. We checked the radars and other sources and went back to bed. Perhaps not the wisest thing, but no tornado warning boxes were being posted and the storm was north of us.

Thrilled for TX this morning. It not only slows things down but brings greater attention to this important issue.

Last night we had the privilege of seeing Merle Haggard in concert. He turned 76 recently but still is in fine voice. Mostly he and the Strangers played iconic songs, but also a few new ones. I laughed, I cried… it was a thrill to be there and see one of my very favorite singers.

What with the late-to-bed and the interruption in the middle, we both slept quite late this morning, especially me. Jim’s still wrestling with his back pain, though it is better.

Hope everyone has a safe and peaceful day.

Only mid-eighties instead of mid-nineties. Which is a good thing, because I have to walk a mile from my mechanic’s place this afternoon 🙂

Shorter Tuesday: SCOTUS sucks, Senator Ed Markey doesn’t.

  15. bubbanomics

sore rump these days, as meat space issues been kicking on it pretty hard.  hang in there and havea happy hump day.  let’s see if scotus can get a couple right today.

  16. slksfca

Still tired this morning but had to get up for the SCOTUS rulings.

Not raining but the dark wet clouds are lingering. Warm-up predicted for later this week.

just said, heck with it, I’m going to check in.  Not getting a dang thing done anyway because I keep getting interrupted.  W00T!!! to Wendy Davis – reminds me of the good things about my home state.  Real Texans hate injustice (which tells you what I think of the carpetbaggers and scalawags who’ve been running it for the last couple of decades).  And W00T! to DOMA & Prop 8 being shut down.  Gives all a breather and an energizing ray of hope as we get back to shoveling the huge pile of elephant shit we need to clear off our flag and our country.  How’s that for a metaphor?  Anyway, my friend is dealing with stuff as it comes up – funeral for family today, a memorial tomorrow for the work folks (he’d worked here 29 years), and a “wake” on Saturday for his SCA friends/community (he’s been in that even longer) – and all the financial things that come up when somebody dies.  {{{HUS}}} to the Mooselands.
