Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. Don’t forget to let your peeps know where to find you.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

The morning check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

    64 here, headed for 86.

Home internet is down. Dunno why, I let trs deal with such things, but I’m running behind & posting from my phone. Catch y’all after 7 Eastern.

  2. 60 degrees here in Madison WI on its way up to 69 degrees. A few showers this morning and thunderstorms this afternoon. We will not get into the 70s again until next week.

Thank you for inventing infinite energy!!! Can I borrow about a day’s worth?

  3. Power still out, road still closed. Donna is going to have to take the hour-long drive to get Christine and Roxanne to school for their last day. God bless Honda and their reliable generators!

I have a question for all you computer geeks 🙂

I was watching this piece on why Windows 8 sucks

Has anyone tried 8?  Is it really as bad as it sounds 🙁

Was planning to buy a puter for my husband for his birthday – I guess I better buy him a pc with 7 on it…if I can find one – any suggestions (no MACs though)

a wet and gray day here with temperatures expected to go up to the mid 80s with scattered thunderstorms. Rain and gray skies are in the offing for the next few days alas. Am going away for those inclement days to bird watch and not sure it’s going to be optimal weather but headed to the marshes anyway.

On a cheerful note on the news front, just saw that Anthony Weiner has decided to run for mayor. Am already cringing at the jokes to come. At least it won’t be a dull race!

Fierce days to all. Will check in when I’m back to catch up on your adventures and take on the news.

  6. After Monday’s fiasco yesterday was pretty good. To start with got the 1099R from the Defense Dept. so I reran my brother’s taxes and the Feds owe me another $600.00 and the idiots in Indiana who tried to tell me I owed them money since I estimated Mike’s earnings now have to refund me what I paid them plus another $11.00. The car will get fixed next Wednesday at no cost to me. And Chris Garcia will probably be featuring my latest art piece in his Hugo Award winning fanzine The Drink Tank called Gaia since he went nuts over it yesterday. And we may be getting an offer on the house.

I see my new Doctor today and hopefully can get back on the medicines for COPD, asthma, GERD and severe arthritis that I’ve been without for over a year and a half.

  7. I am baking a fruit Betty to take to work today. It is a coworker’s birthday. No wonder we are all having trouble with our weights.

Melanie is smiling on the other side of the table. I wonder what she is thinking about. Maybe she will say.

I need to check the oven.

  8. Diana in NoVa

Got a braided lemon loaf waiting in the oven downstairs, so going to disappear to eat breakfast in a minute.

Michele, glad things are going better for you!  That’s nice to hear.  Dearly Beloved framed the picture you did and it looks great! I’ll upload a photo when he sends it to me.

I have to have a huge fight by telephone with a company in Somewhere, USA, this morning.  I ordered two blueberry plants from them.  They’ve charged me twice–here it is, two months later, and I still don’t have the plants.  I’m tired of their excuses.  If they don’t want to give me a refund for the plants I never received, I’m going to be very nasty and write bad reviews of them online.

Having lunch with two of my Circle sisters today–the memory will cheer me up tomorrow when I have to go to the dentist to be Worked On.

    Everyone have a good day!

  9. Sure, I’m smiling. I’m drinking coffee Jim made for me.

    It’s 58° now and heading to mid-60s.

Son and I have a few errands to run this morning — bank, PO, library, armory. Not sure what else.

  10. Only 8 more days to go. I called the local SocSec office yesterday to sign up for Medicare B. I also need to pick my D provider.

    See you later.

Raining in Westmont Illinois.  Has been all night.  Not stormy, just rainy.  I am moving slow as molasses this morning.

We are picking out a swing set for the kids today. Hope you are all well.

yesterday was nice staying well below 90 degrees and today should be nice too. We’re forecast for thunderstorms later this week which would be wonderful if they materialize, right now were two inches behind on our average annual rainfall so it’s not looking good for the drought to break this year. Another hot dry summer will wear on everyone’s nerves except for the youngsters who appreciate not having rain interfere with their fun. Grace hadn’t seen rain until we took her to central Texas and she was so interested. Didn’t show any interest in getting out in it though.

Eating breakfast — a leftover taco from last night’s purchase (they had a “buy 3 get a vegan brownie” special — who could resist?)

Not even a drop of rain here last night. Sigh. I did finally hear from my insurance company. There’s also a voice mail on my phone from the property manager. The insurance co wants me to compare their repair sheets with what the property manager is asking for….. sigh

This evening’s workout is a run. I will walk what I can — taking my camelbak, since it has gotten so hot. Which is totally pathetic, since a month from now, these temps will feel cool.

Current earworm — I can’t believe I’ve never seen this video, it looks early enough to be the original line up:

It’s 70° here, Nature’s plan for the day is to go up to 87°, add thundershowers and stir.

I’m having breakfast with Fred, Best Boss Ever from the 1990s and a good friend. He gets to listen to me whine about my hip and knee and a recently pulled hamstring. That last seems to be getting better, so maybe I won’t look like Richard III as I walk into the restaurant.

  15. slksfca

Bright and sunny this morning but with gusty winds, so it’s not exactly warm. Sure is a pretty morning though.

  16. slksfca

So I’m thinking I’ll take an early walk today, because if it’s going to get windy again it will be in the afternoon, and I’d just as soon avoid that.

But maybe I’ll email my friend who lives nearby and is between jobs at the moment. He might want to join me at the pub for an afternoon cocktail. We haven’t hung out in a couple of weeks or more.

    Hope everyone’s enjoying their day!

…called ‘Bacon Bacon’ has been forced to close down, after neighbors complained that the neighborhood around the restaurant smelled … of bacon. Sheesh. They should be grateful they don’t live next to a foul-smelling paper mill or something.

We are still in Oregon, visiting our daughter and her family now. The coast was lovely, and the beaches very accessible. I couldn’t manage the trail to the Heceta Head Lighthouse but the log I found to rest on was a nice place to wait while everyone else hiked and explored.

…about her journey as a pro-LGBT Mormon (with both a gay son and a gay brother — me). In the piece she says,

    The Power of Empathy

Most of us who work to bring about change are spurred to action by a personal connection, usually in the form of a loved one. We are, of course, in awe of the straight allies who freely empathize and act without a nudge. They are brilliant and rare and need to be cloned (or at least canonized). As for the rest of the world-not everyone can be lucky enough to have a gay child, but everyone can be lucky enough to LOVE a gay child.

What I now know for sure is that it is incumbent upon those of us who have tapped into our empathy the hard way and suffered the pain under our own roof to be a voice in what feels, at times, like the wilderness. To stay and to share our stories; to put faces and names to this urgent issue. When those who care about us feel even a smidgeon of empathy; a sliver of a “that could be my child” kind of thinking, then hearts will soften and minds can change. It is our best and brightest hope.

the flaw in the cat-bread perpetual motion machine is the axle. as soon as something is there to support the weight of the cat, it falls asleep and stops spinning.  with an axle that’s too light to support the cat’s weight, the thing becomes unstable… the whirling cat-bread dervish has a tendency to move sideways while hovering.  eventually the cat contacts something it can grab onto, and that’s all she wrote.  don’t ask how i know this.
