Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

The Daily F Bomb, Sunday 2/24/13

Good morning! It’s Sunday, and it’s also Oscar day. Once upon a time I used to try to see every single nominated film (I never actually succeeded), but these days I rarely go to films, even with the coolest theater in all of L.A. right down the street. However, thanks to the magic of “For Your Consideration” DVDs, I actually managed to squeeze in a few this year. Hell, I’d watch it anyway, and follow it on Twitter, because it’s fun.

Anyway, the questions today are all movie related.

Interrogatories

What is your favorite drama of all time? What is your favorite comedy of all time? What is your favorite Sci-fi/Fantasy/FX film of all time? What is your favorite musical of all time? What actor and actress to you can do no wrong? What is your favorite song that you were introduced to in a movie? And a special bonus question for movie geeks: Fave costume designer (I know not all of you will be able to answer this).

In 1920, the Nazi party was founded (under the name of the German Workers Party).

In 1945, American soldiers liberated the Philippine capital of Manila from Japanese control during World War II.

In 1981, Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of Britain’s Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer.

In 2006, NASA said 2005 was the warmest year in more than a century of record-keeping.

I want a gigantic poster of that Richard Hamilton painting for my living room.  I have lots of questions about it.  Need it in my house to figure it all out.

Drama:  of all time?  Jeez, that is tough….I loved Phillip Seymour Hoffman in capote.  That book has been important to me and I thought the way that movie was done and Hoffman in particular was great.

Comedy:  Three Amigos.  Not kidding.  I love that movie.

    Sci-fi:  Star Wars and LOTR

Musical: tough one…I am still a sucker for The Sound of Music. But I cannot understate the importance of Grease to my childhood self.  Am going to see Book of Mormon in April, so maybe that will get a spot.

    Actor:  Paul Newman

    Actress:  Cate Blanchett

Song:  Ms. Misery by Elliot Smith from Good Will Hunting.

Costume designer:  whoever did the costumes for cate in Elizabeth

  6. Its the Supreme Court Stupid

Chief Justice John Marshall had been Adams’ Secretary of State at the end of the administration when the confirmations of “midnight appointments” came through from the Senate.  Marbury was being appointed to a magistrate position in DC.  His and a number of other appointments had not been sealed and delivered to the designees by the Secretary of State (can anyone say “conflict of interest”, Mr. Marshall)in the press of business (one of those appointments — which was sealed and delivered — was that appointing Marshall as CJ).  So, Marbury sued to force the new Secretary of State, James Madison, to deliver the writ of appointment.

Marshall was in a quandry.  The Jefferson Administration fully expected him to come down in favor of Marbury, and was very publicly planning to ignore him and his decision, thus, effectively, diminishing his power.  So, he pulled a hat out of the rabbit.  His ruling was that Marbury was entitled to the appointment, but that the Congress, by increasing the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court in the Judicial Act of 1790 to cover the writ sought here, had exceeded its authority.  Under the Constitution, Congress can only change the appellate jurisdiction of SCOTUS.  Its original jurisdiction (the ability to hear cases as the first court to try the case) was limited to “all Cases affecting Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, and those in which a State shall be Party”.  Since a law cannot trump the Constitution, and, since the Courts are the arbiter of these things, the law must fall.  Marbury cannot get his appointment (which made Jefferson happy), and the Court secured for itself the role of the final arbiter of the Constitution.

Going to church in a minute, where we will celebrate our 2nd anniversary of being a Reconciling Congregation. That’s the movement in the Methodist church where we say “Yo, GLBT people – come in this house! You are invited, we like you just fine.” Ok, I may have Texan-ed that up a bit, but you get the idea. There are now 5, count ’em, 5, Reconciling congregations in Austin. Texas. Equality is coming in like the tide, it will happen.

Then I’m working at a fundraiser for a candidate for county judge (not like a judge judge, more the chair of the county commissioners). And I’ll be seeking contributions to the Hill Country Ride while I’m there.

Then I’ll come home & make smoothies to eat next week for breakfast & watch Oscar arrivals, then Walking Dead & Talking Dead.

  11. Gee

I’m up before noon!  Woo hoo!

    Movies…

Once upon a time I used to try to see every single nominated film (I never actually succeeded), but these days I rarely go to films, even with the coolest theater in all of L.A. right down the street.

I once tried to see as many of the nominated films as I could on one Presidents’ Day weekend.  It was exhausting.  It was the year of Titanic, or else I probably would never have seen that.

    Film questions!!!!!!

    Cries and Whispers

    Play It Again, Sam

    Galaxy Quest

There are many too many great actors and actresses from too many eras to pick one!  From the “Classic” era, I’d say Myrna Loy and maybe Melvyn Douglas.  From “my” era, Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges.  Let’s throw Toshiro Mifune in there somewhere.  I’ve left out so many greats.  Henry Fonda.  James Stewart.  Barbara Stanwyck.  Jean Arthur.  Must… stop.

This one is a little tongue-in-cheek, but the first thing that came to mind was a western starring Roy Orbison(!) called The Fastest Guitar Alive, which featured a guitar with a gun barrel that protruded from the box.  The film had a lot of songs, but I’ll pick Rollin’ On.  Now, you owe it to yourself to seek out this flick!

Well, I don’t know who designed what, so I’ll just reply with the old one-liner:  Edith Head gives good wardrobe.

  12. Gee

Turns out Walmart refuses to stock that “offensive” Prince album we wanted to buy. They do have a great selection of assault weapons, though

That really sums up just about everything, doesn’t it?

1463 – Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, Italian humanist (d. 1494)

OK, I gotta catch up on this guy.  As soon as I’m done with Lucretius.

1885 – Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, Polish writer and painter (d. 1939)

Anjelica Huston’s head on a pike?

1942 – Paul Jones, English singer (Manfred Mann and The Manfreds)

Uh huh, it was the Manfreds!

  13. princesspat

Good morning…..I’ve been listening to Tom Russell again and this song just takes me to the movies.

“Let’s sing those love songs from the old movies in our hearts”

  14. slksfca

Haven’t seen a single new movie this year, so I’m not really “invested.” Instead, I plan to sit quietly in the dark and mourn the absence of Downton Abbey.

Just kidding (sort of). I think there’s a nice Poirot on tonight, and I do love David Suchet as the little Belgian. 🙂

And +2 for “Joe Lieberman, weasel”.

So … question: when would a Clematis NOT be pretty? “Your pretty Clematis pic of the day.” seems redundant.

    Have fun watching Oscars!
