Saturday Morning Moose Check In – Magisterial Moose Musings

Be sure your peeps know where to find you.

 photo PeepsDowntonAbbey.jpg

I would like to welcome you if you are new to the Moose. Feel free to walk around and check out your new digs. If you are an established Moose, grab your cuppa and pull up a chair. Feel free to comment at any time or continue lurking as you will.  Kysen has left us all a Welcome Mat Part Duex to help us get around easier.

JanFab has written out some instructions to help.

The big stuff:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh.

I would like to add a couple of things to this list:

Only hit post once for comments. When a diary gets longer,it takes a bit to reload. During the time it’s reloading, I find myself wanting to hit post again to make sure my comment is there. Hitting the comment button twice puts the comment out there twice.

When creating a new diary, remember to hit the draft button while you are working on it. Hit the public button when you want to publish it. I seem to be very good at forgetting this.

The most important rule around here is

Be kind to each other… or else.

In other words, if you don’t want it said to you, then don’t say it to someone else. Respect is an important thing. If you feel the need to not respect, then step away and take a breath. Political debate can be both spirited and respectful.

For those of you lurking and being shy, no reason to be nervous. Drop us a comment and start making your Moose Tracks. No time like the present.

Five degrees in beautiful, scenic Bay City, Michigan. I’m happy to report that it didn’t hit the minus one that we were expecting. The ground and snow are warmer then the air, so we have some weird fog going on.

How about a Saturday morning sing along?

This is Violet Crawley Dowager Countess Of Grantham. IMO she gets all the best lines and one liners. She is played by the brilliant Maggie Smith

  3. First, sorry all you east coastiers for sending NoName, the snowstorm that dumped 4.5 inches on Madison on Thursday and is now giving you the Storm of the Century Month … but at least your storm has a namo!

Second, Khloe Khloe Khloe … I cannot sing at this time of the morning. In fact, singing is something I cannot do at any time of the day or night as it is part of the restraining order put on me by The Planet after I broke out in song and caused the earth’s rotation to stop as it listened in horror.

Although, I guess it is okay for this guy to sing:

It is currently 30&deg with a bit of a breeze – a breeze with gusts up to 50 MPH. Got called in to work last night around 5:30 – A new tenant had just signed papers on a house they are leasing down the street from me. They walked in the house and found water on the laundry room floor. It turns out a pipe fitting is leaking from the water heater. So, today (my normal Saturday on duty) I get to replace the flex line coming off the water heater. Not a big job at all, but I hate doing plumbing. Fortunately, the tenants aren’t moving in until next weekend.

To whoever controls the front page – thanks for front-paging iriti’s piece last night.

We have about 18 inches of snow here so far in sunny southern New Hampshire. Still snowing, but lightly. And it’s the light, fluffy stuff, not the real heavy, wet stuff. Not sure if I’ll get to my neighbor’s to work out this am. Going to the gym, my new hobby, is out. It should stop by late afternoon. Power is still on. Nice and warm. Will be cleared up by tomorrow. It looks nice, plus spring is on the way. it always is. It’s good to give mother earth some cover to get ready 🙂

    no snow for us.

Khloe, we’re still trying to get to the bottom of what’s going on with Sadie although she is making progress.  Still a bit of a mystery though.

30 here in the Shenandoah Valley, headed for 37.

A song for all those like me who didn’t watch the Superbowl even for the commercials. The real sports season starts in two months!

As I said, this is a frosty, snowless weekend in Germany. It’s Carneval, and there will be a lot of towns with parades going on (i.e. blocked traffic), so staying home is my favorite thing on weekends like this. They take this stuff pretty seriously around here:

    Alemannic Carnival

great diary Khloe, rec’d last night and will visit again today.

22 in st Charles.  Going up to 35.  We have a big fish on the line for buying the house so keep your fingers crossed for us.  Hubby works today so doesn’t feel like the weekend around here.  Oh, and another showing at ten this AM.   Let the cleaning up begin ( again).  Have a great day.

I’m on the part of Long Island that got the minimum amount of snow of about 11 inches.  But further east they got a whole lot more with a lot of stupid people who were out during the storm (despite the fact that there were bans on driving on these roads) and are now totally stranded.

    I don’t get that.

Anyway – I had about 6 hours of rain then sleet and sleet and snow mixture before it finally turned to snow which is why I had less accumulation.

Birds are filling up on food I set out for them in preparation of the storm.

Indoor pooties fed and napping off the breakfast orgasm…

    😀

overnight. it looks like we got about 6 inches. Now the wind is blowing, and it is 27 degrees. We dodged a bullet, but I feel sorry for the folks further north. Dad and I will go out to shovel in a while. We always shovel together. If one of us passes out, the other one can phone 911.

  13. wordsinthewind

so today will no doubt be a howler. The wind is such a presence out here in the high desert it surprises me when folks won’t learn how to live with it. I was fortunate since my fil liked me and taught me all the little tricks that make it bearable. Most of them were not intuitive either so it doesn’t surprise me when I see folks doing it wrong. They just never learn to like it here and there is much to like once you get past the wind.

I paid an all-too-brief visit to Anchorage, years ago.  Went on a little tour to the Portage Glacier, and on the way the driver of the little tour bus pointed out a mother moose waiting by the side of the road with her calf.

And I was able to see salmon leaping upstream.  Alaska is magical!  I’d love to visit it again one day.

No snow here in Washington, DC–28 F. and a very nasty cold wind blowing. A slow cooker dinner tonight!

  15. DeniseVelez

NY. Just got off the phone with my brother in Providence RI- they really got buried – he has over 2 feet.

I’m headed out to clean off the porch – the dratted wind blew a bunch of snow up against the back door – the dogs are looking at me like “are you crazy? We are not walking in this”

    Taboo would have loved it.

  16. slksfca

Not exactly balmy here (41 or so) but I’ll take it over what’s going on elsewhere.

Museum visit was fantastic. It was a fairly small show but what gorgeous objects there were. I was totally amazed at the beauty and craftsmanship I saw. I think my favorite object was a small gold coffee grinder that had belonged to Mme. de Pompadour, embossed all around with red gold coffee berries and green gold coffee leaves. Incredible luxury.

Speaking of coffee, I can’t wait for mine to finish brewing!

  17. Nurse Kelley

Good morning, Meeses! I’ve been on the Disabled List for two weeks, but I’m back in the rotation today. Silky, how’s that coffee coming along?

  18. Heading into the kitchen to make a coffee cake. Then a pizza for lunch. Other then that I’m babying this stupid cold all weekend. I’ve had it since August and can hardly wait for March 1st when I get Medicare and can see a doctor and get something for it.

  19. pittiepat

city council to make the “you’re gonna pay” law but it got national attention. SA got one of its not-so-rare frog stranglers and this particular road was posted closed and police cars were there to make sure no one tried to cross the flooded road.  A gal in an SUV assumed that they surely didn’t mean her and sped around the police cars and into the rushing water.  She had to be rescued (her car not so much) and the police and fire departments were so seriously annoyed they sent her a bill for time and services.

  20. Ebby

in the Armstrong Valley this morning.  It’s nice to have the sun even if it means the nights are colder.  I’ve seen the first green shoots of crocus coming up.  Can’t wait til they look like this (previous year, but the same type):

     photo crocus.jpg

Thinking about all of you being hit by the weather — I hope you can hang in there, and above all be safe.

  21. cassandracarolina

Rain on the way tomorrow. Watching the Boston and southern NH weather updates for my kinfolk, so far so good. Portland Maine reportedly has the most snowfall EVER since records were kept. I find that suspicious, having lived in the Portsmouth NH area for a dozen years and shoveling in back-to-back 20-30-inch snowfalls.

Maybe back in the days before social media there was less hyperbole?  A 20-inch snowfall was just a 20-inch snowfall and not a SNOWPOCALYPSE!!!!!!

  22. Just had a lovely evening of banter and BS with fellow moose Elch, who brought along news from Berlin and points Deutsche.

One interesting new story is of the discovery of a Soviet bunker under his East German home town. It had been kept secret from locals like him before the Wall came down and only found later. Apparently it was the westernmost listening post for the Cold War USSR, using signals bouncing off the ionosphere to keep an eye on naughty Americans.

You can now tour the facility for five Euros. Stalin would be so pissed.

  23. LeftOverFlowerChild

Busy busy this morning baking a birthday cake for my oldest son. German chocolate, no store bought frosting for the birthday cake, gotta be the real deal. So real deal it is.

Love the hummingbird videos! I can’t wait for the return of hummingbirds and bluebonnets.
