Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

The Daily F Bomb, Tuesday 1/29

Happy Tuesday, Troopers!  Just another day in the neighborhood, with Alabama congresscritters proposing bills that would basically make government illegal, NRA jerks heckling the father of one of the Newtown victims, the Boy Scouts maybe allowing gays, immigration reform becoming a bit more possible… Oh, and I say Lincoln is better than Silver Linings Playbook, Les Miz, or Argo (of all the whatchamacallit nominees I’ve seen so far).

My nosiness remains boundless: What is your favorite music to clean house to? Nuts and chews or soft centers (candy, you fool)? Is cooked fruit OK? Are sweet ingredients (like fruit) OK in savory dishes? When you were little did you prefer to play indoors or outdoors? How about now?

Excerpts from the Twitter Stream of (un)Consciousness:

This still hasn’t been resolved as of my bedtime: What does Rep. Jack Kimble (Imaginary R, CA) want with Daily KOS?:

A burning local Los Angeles issue that I am completely on board with:

On This Day

In 1834, President Andrew Jackson ordered the first use of federal soldiers to suppress a labor dispute.

In 1845, Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven” was first published, in the New York Evening Mirror.

In 1861, Kansas was admitted as the 34th state.

In 1900, the American League, consisting of eight baseball teams, was organized in Philadelphia.

In 1995, the San Francisco 49ers became the first team to win five Super Bowl titles when they beat the San Diego Chargers 49-26 in Super Bowl XXIX. (also: Go Niners!!!)

In 1998, bomb exploded at an abortion clinic in Birmingham, Ala., killing an off-duty policeman and severely wounding a nurse. The bomber, Eric Rudolph, was captured in May 2003 and is serving a life sentence. Unfortunately he is idolized by the “right to life” crowd.

In 2006, ABC “World News Tonight” co-anchor Bob Woodruff and a cameraman were seriously injured in a roadside bombing in Iraq.

In 2009, the Illinois Senate voted to remove Governor Rod Blagojevich from office.

In 2010, abortion opponent Scott Roeder was convicted of murder by a jury in Wichita, Kan., in the shooting death of Dr. George Tiller, one of the only doctors to offer late-term abortions in the U.S.

I’m short one hour of sleep. This could be fun. I made a big shot of espresso, that helped temporarily.

I have no love for housework, but when forced to acknowledge dust balls from cat and dog hair, one of my favorite get up and clean tunes is Stevie Winwood’s (Chaka Khan doing back-up vocals)

    Dancin’ with my mop πŸ™‚

    Here are a few answers:

What is your favorite music to clean house to? This is blue jersey dad’s job, especially since he’s retired and I am not.

Nuts and chews or soft centers (candy, you fool)? All of the above.

Is cooked fruit OK? Yes, I like fruit on the grill. Frankly, I like fruit in almost any form.

Are sweet ingredients (like fruit) OK in savory dishes? Yes.

When you were little did you prefer to play indoors or outdoors? Outdoors, except in the winter. That’s one of the reasons I became a field archaeologist. It is one of the few professions that requires a graduate degree but lets you work outdoors.

How about now? I still love being outside, except in the winter. I do not like cold and snow.

rather frustrated this a.m.  I live in a state where your car must pass a vehicle emission test yearly.  Unfortunately, this is turning into a sort of “poor tax” because the cars that flunk are almost invariably older cars.  To repair them – and one must get them repaired to get them registered and driveable – can cost an insane amount of money.  While I fully understand the need to reduce carbon emissions and would love to be able to buy myself and my kids more environmentally friendly cars or take public transport, neither option is possible.

This is a minor issue compared to many other impositions on the less than wealthy out there but it is really becoming impossible to “make it round here anymore”….even if you are all employed in a family.

  5. What is your favorite music to clean house to?

Something complex to keep my mind busy. Coltrane or Bach or similar

Nuts and chews or soft centers (candy, you fool)?

I am not a huge candy fan. I get fat eating fats not sweets.

    Is cooked fruit OK?

    Yes.

Are sweet ingredients (like fruit) OK in savory dishes?

Yes, if the cuisine calls for it. There are north African/Arab dishes that are wonderful with sweet and savory.  Thai food often has a balance between many flavors. But I don’t like the attempts that go into some European foods.

When you were little did you prefer to play indoors or outdoors?

    Indoors

    How about now?

    Indoors.

  6. Its the Supreme Court Stupid

a day to celebrate national corn chips?  Can we not celebrate local corn chips?   What is wrong with Federalism?

Now that I’ve asked some questions, here are my answers:

What is your favorite music to clean house to? Talking Heads and the B-52s

Nuts and chews or soft centers (candy, you fool)? I say “Nuts” to nuts

    Is cooked fruit OK? Sure

Are sweet ingredients (like fruit) OK in savory dishes?  But, of course.  I make a sweet and sour pork dish with pineapple and a sauce based on soy sauce.  Delicious!

When you were little did you prefer to play indoors or outdoors?  Outdoors

How about now?  That depends on what I’m playing.

  7. LeftOverFlowerChild

Ya know, somehow I just gotta believe this is not something the current GOP leadership will embrace…

What is your favorite music to clean house to? 80’s music…Heart, Styx, Cheap Trick..

Nuts and chews or soft centers (candy, you fool)? All of ’em :o)

    Is cooked fruit OK? Yep

Are sweet ingredients (like fruit) OK in savory dishes? Absolutely

When you were little did you prefer to play indoors or outdoors? How about now? Outside, and now, I like to be outside but with lupus I now have sun sensitivity so I can’t be outside as much. However that one little downer doesn’t stop me from sitting on the front porch to work on various fiber/handcrafts…

  8. raina

What’s important is that it is chocolate.

What do you mean by cooked fruit? Fruit cooked and seasoned and served as is, like cooked apples, then no. Fruit cooked in certain desserts like cobbler, or like apple sauce, yes. Fruit used in a cream pie like lemon meringue or key lime, yes.

Fruit, dried and fresh, is good in stuffing. I sometimes add diced apples to ribs and kraut. Also certain fruits are good in green salads.

I’ve always been an indoors person. I would much rather read a book than play outside. Still am.

  9. Aji

What?  I’m actually here in the morning.  What?

    Love the Sisley choice.

    Hmm.  Questions:

What is your favorite music to clean house to?

Don’t laugh.  It used to be “She Bangs,” except that I would get sidetracked salsa-ing.  Now it’s probably Cee-Lo.  Yes, that one.

Nuts and chews or soft centers (candy, you fool)?

Usually soft, but sometimes nuts are okahy.  Chewy, not so much.

    Is cooked fruit OK?

Not usually by itself.  Too much a reminder of the [commercial] canned fruit of my childhood.  In recipes, though, it’s great.

Are sweet ingredients (like fruit) OK in savory dishes?

    ABSOLUTELY.

When you were little did you prefer to play indoors or outdoors?

Both.  The key word here is “play.”

    How about now?

    Depends on what we’re playing at . . . .

  10. lulu57

same reason as yesterday: out playing tennis. Trying to break in new shoes and I think I have a small blister coming up on my toe. Rest tomorrow, then back on the courts Thursday.

It’s freaking awesome here today…sunny and 55! Supposed to go up to the mid 60’s later. Mother Nature is teasing me again. πŸ™‚

What is your favorite music to clean house to?

I have a playlist on my iPod called Workout, and I use that to clean house as well. I find the Theme from Peter Gunn excellent to vacuum to πŸ˜‰

Nuts and chews or soft centers (candy, you fool)?

Don’t eat much candy anymore, but NO NUTS. All chocolate must be nut-free here…but you knew that πŸ˜‰

    Is cooked fruit OK?

    Better than just okay!

Are sweet ingredients (like fruit) OK in savory dishes?

    Yes. Yes. YES.

When you were little did you prefer to play indoors or outdoors? How about now?

When I was little, I would rather play outdoors, if I was indoors I was reading. But on a nice sunny day, I would rather play outside. I’m sure my parents agreed πŸ™‚

Now I would still rather play outside…weather permitting. If it’s too cold or wet, I will play indoors. I didn’t grow up in an area where it snowed, so I don’t know how to play in it. I just stand at the window and shake my fist at it πŸ™‚

Aging in Brain Found to Hurt Sleep Needed for Memory

Scientists have known for decades that the ability to remember newly learned information declines with age, but it was not clear why. A new study may provide part of the answer.

The report, posted online on Sunday by the journal Nature Neuroscience, suggests that structural brain changes occurring naturally over time interfere with sleep quality, which in turn blunts the ability to store memories for the long term.

Tasty gluten free baking is a challenge for me, but these recipes appear promising.

  12. sarahnity

which leaves only these two where I have a definitive opinion:

Is cooked fruit OK? Almost never.  There are exceptions, of course, but as a rule, NO!!

Are sweet ingredients (like fruit) OK in savory dishes? Sometimes yes, but this kind of pairing should only be left to the professionals.

  13. dakinishir

My response to that is mainly, “cleaning?”

    Heh.

If I cleaned, I’d have to kill SO MANY fur bunnies. O the ‘umanity.

With you on Lincoln. So, so, so good.

What is your favorite music to clean house to? Covered this already

Nuts and chews or soft centers (candy, you fool)? Solid dark chocolate only

Is cooked fruit OK? No. At least, not for eating.

Are sweet ingredients (like fruit) OK in savory dishes? No.

When you were little did you prefer to play indoors or outdoors? Umm, it depended. Was it bug season? Inside. Not? Outside.

How about now? Pretty much the same.
